5 out of 5 eggsA good, solid UPS

Pros: * Quality UPS, contains advanced battery management from APCs more expensive product lines

* High VA for the money

* Cool looking LCD you will rarely notice

* Service - APC sells large UPS solutions to commercial users and we home uses get to benefit from their service infrastructure. You can get timely tech support, order replacement batteries, and even trade in your old units for credit on newer models. I've always been impressed with them (at least compared to their competition).

Contrast Cisco's 'special' support channel for Linksys buyers.

Cons: Like all UPSs - heavy, requires some maintenance, and APC's free service tapers off over time.

'Surge suppression' is just shunting over-voltage to earth ground via MOVs, which is not a great idea in my opinion. All consumer surge suppressors work this way. Read up at brickwall.com on how industrial equipment is protected from surges.

Other Thoughts: A UPS is a pretty technical piece of equipment and isn't going to run maintenance free forever.

The time your PC runs on battery power depends on the power your PC draws and the condition of the batteries. That makes for a huge range in battery life, and the only way to make it last longer is to get a bigger UPS. There is nothing the manufacturer can do to change this, but you could buy the management suite so you can monitor your load and batteries.

The 'weird intermittent noises' someone mentioned may be the normal self test it performs (daily?), or it may be an under-voltage problem in your power a the wall. It can also be because your batteries or control board need replacing. If you were to run the management software (no home user bothers) it would warn you of these issues, but most of us find out when it fails to protect us from an outage, or just turns itself off. I would not return the unit to service after it failed on me until it was repaired!!

1 out of 5 eggsHuge waste of money

Pros: Works as a surge protector. Provides a couple of minutes to turn equipment off during a power outage.

Cons: Started intermittently failing almost immediately after the two year warranty period ended. Would suddenly turn off randomly about once a month, then a couple times a month, and then eventually two-three times per day. When it did this is caused damage to the connected computer equipment.

Other Thoughts: The purpose of a battery backup system is to keep you up and running during intermittant power outages. This unit failed and cut power far more frequently than electrical outages (damaging my computer equipment and requiring it to be replaced). If you buy this unit, expect nothing more than 2 years of reasonable performance (I would have rated it only 3 stars if it didn't fail) and then for it to allow your connected equipment to be damaged.

$200 which caused over $2000 worth of damage. That's a $2200 liability, not at all the 10% insurance I expected it to be. I'll never buy another APC, their reputation for reliability is nothing but deceptive marketing.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Unit!

Pros: I had two 1500 kva APC units in my lab that died and needed a replacement ASAP. Did alot of searching online and saw these. Was a little relunctant but decided to give a try after reading reviews. SO NOT DISAPPOINTED! I love this thing. I have two Dell 110s, a QNAP,switch, firewall, two routers PLUS my workstation all powered on and only two bars on the load LED. Power went out the other night and it worked flawlessly.

Cons: Only wished the LED wasn't that ugly red.... looks so cheezy... but the unit works as it should. Will buy another when $$$ are better.

2 out of 5 eggsgood until it die

Pros: nice features, easy setup.

Cons: after only 3 months of use it started to make some weird noises, intermitent loud noises.

Other Thoughts: as soon as verified that the noise was comming from this unit I contacted APC thru email, after a few back and forth emails I was told to do a routine test to verify that the unit was faulty.

of course it was, now APC email me that they will send me a new unit (different model because this unit according to them is out of stock)

the email also says that "after 30 days I will have to pay for the return shipping"... not too happy about that, this unit is HEAVY so I can guess it will be costly to ship back.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Nice powerful UPS. I bought this size to handle two moderately powerful machines and two CRT monitors for a couple minutes. I have a much powerful machine on it now, an older machine and two IPS panels instead; yet it'll still give me about 7 minutes of power. With the older machine alone, it'll run it for nearly 40 minutes; the more powerful one alone about 20.

Cons: The telephone and coax surge never quite worked for me; the coax in particular when I was on cable. Since I'm now on fiber, this isn't much of an issue anymore.

Other Thoughts: When I bought this my area had some aging transformers which would cause low voltage situations on hot summer days. Since a transformer in the area did in fact fail catastrophically on a very hot and humid day the summer I bought this, the utility has changed out a number of transformers including the one powering my house.
If I get another UPS, it'll likely be a slightly lower capacity model for my home theater setup.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks good

Pros: - Works as expected except for 1 con (see cons)
- Reasonably priced

Cons: - The time specs on the box are unrealistic. It will keep 1 PC up with a monitor for about 25 minutes (box claims 90). If PC is on standby or is set to go to standby automatically then it will keep it up for 4-9 hours (depending on how much charge is left).

Other Thoughts: If you are on Windows 7 or Vista, use the windows based power management to set this unit up. The built in CD version is not as robust.

5 out of 5 eggsSo much incorrect info here

Pros: There is a lot of misinformation provided by customers at New Egg. Some of these comments need to be vetted by New Egg, as they are misleading. First off this version absolutely does provided Trim and Buck. Also, there are several posts about active PFC and the need for a battery backup to produce a true sine wave if your PSU has active PFC. This is false and just an attempt to get you to buy a more expensive battery system. Ask your PSU vendor. I did and the claim is totally false.

As for this system works very good. Has handled a couple of short power losses with no problems. Power chute is an excellent product that comes with this unit. It provides duration info on blackouts, overvoltages, undervoltages and electrical noise. Also, gives information on current usage in watts. My gaming system under full load has around 400 watts of consumption. Estimated battery time under full load is 10 minutes. When under light load I get about 25 minutes of battery.

Cons: Communication between power chute and battery sometimes is lost and causes a repeated warning to pop up. Not a real problem though

Other Thoughts: Do your homework before purchasing a battery backup. There is so much misinformation being published by reviewers at this site.

5 out of 5 eggsBuy This UPS!

Pros: I was able to put 2 PC's, 2 monitors, & most of my networking equipment on this UPS & it still is only at 42% capacity. The LCD screen is great for monitoring all important aspects of the battery. For the average user, this UPS would handle your entire network (PC, Monitor, Router, Modem, printer, backup hard drive, etc.)

Cons: None, it's 1 of the best investments I've made to protect my computers!

5 out of 5 eggsNever had a problem with APC

Pros: Ordered 2 units, both worked first time. APC works with Ubuntu server.

Cons: Maybe sometime soon we can get lithium technology and ditch these heavy lead acids!

Other Thoughts: I think that this is the largest APC unit you can buy on the internet before you end up paying for outrageous shipping costs. I don't know if it has to do with weight alone or if it is because of hazmat charges. I purchased 2 of these units instead of one larger unit to avoid the high shipping charges. (I have security cameras on one and server on the other).

5 out of 5 eggsSo Far So Good

Pros: Does what it says on the box.

No problems so far, item worked out the box, although it did not come with Windows 7 64bit software, so I had to download that.

Cons: power outlets a little too close to each other.

If you have to plug in an AC power adaptor, for an external device you may lose a power outlet.

Other Thoughts: I would like the option to have the LED Didplay always on, it turns off after a few seconds and you have to press the button to read the display

5 out of 5 eggsA great consumer model, very informative.

Pros: Good, solid, reliable, simple UPS. You can silence the beeping with the front buttons, and you can either let the display automatically turn off for power savings (and a dark room), or you can set it to remain on permanently. Works fine in minor (multiple minutes, not multiple hours) power outages.

Being able to see voltage, wattage, and estimated run time is very nice; I particularly like being able to turn on and off equipment and see the change, as well as watch the variation as I apply a high load or let the computer idle or go into suspend mode.

It has kept my equipment running during many short power outages, both natural and artificial (unplug the unit from the wall to move things around, plug it back in).

Cons: It's a consumer model; it's not a true online UPS, it doesn't have built-in provision for external batteries, and it's not rackmountable.

Only displays wattage, not VA (volt-amps) or PF (power factor); for those, you need a Kill-a-Watt or other device.

Other Thoughts: When you need to replace the batteries on any small UPS (Less than 70 pounds), try to replace them with Powersonic PSH series high-discharge batteries of the same size and voltage. They work much better (being designed for extremely high load, as you see in a UPS), and don't appear to swell as easily. The batteries are fine, but they do not last forever.

Note that running equipment until the battery's dead significantly decreases the life of the battery, that's just a characteristic of the lead-acid batteries used in all normal UPS's.

I use one set for the default display shutoff on my TV and A/V equipment, and one with the display set for always on for my computer equipment. The rackmount runs on a SMART-UPS 1400 2U. Other equipment runs on some older Back-UPS 500 and Back-UPS 650's.

5 out of 5 eggsexcellent

Pros: Contrary to what I read in a previous post, this unit DOES provide battery backup switching for overvoltage and undervoltage, as well as blackouts and electrical noise. The area I use one of these units in, has frequent power fluctuations. The GUI software shows every glitch longer than a few seconds and it has never missed a beat. Our facility is currently using three of these and they are excellent.

Cons: I can't think of anything.

Other Thoughts: We have used other smaller models of APC and they seem to have trouble after about 6 months to a year. Other brands have lasted a few weeks. One in particular would just randomly shut off. These units have had no issues at all.

5 out of 5 eggsGood unit for the price

Pros: This unit has worked reliably in a building where the power is bad. Saved many server crashes due to power outages and brown outs.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: MIR Information Technology Inc use APC UPS units on a regular basis and highly recommends them from over 15 years of experience, this is the brand to use.

They last the longest and protect the best from all other brands I have seen.

5 out of 5 eggsI own two...

Pros: Great power protection
Size
High Wattage

Cons: I find that I'm always one battery outlet short

Some people mention the Joule protection rating
(A lot of controversy whether this REALLY matters... and if your house gets a DIRECT hit from lightning you will have much larger problems than whether or not your TV is messed up.)

Other Thoughts: I have NEVER had a problem with this unit. I have a Projector, PS3, Xbox 360, DVR, and a Pioneer 7.1 receiver hooked up to this and it runs at about 70% - 85% capacity. Had a brown out with power and it kicked in to save my projector and other devices. I just purchased another one of these for my new Samsung Plasma. I would recommend this to anyone who has a flat screen TV, computer, or home theater. The only next step from here is whole house protection or a rack mount power conditioner with battery backup from APC, but that will run you close to $1,000... or more.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

Pros: Replaced an older APC UPS XL1000. Much quicker and quieter when going on and off. I have my LCD TV, printer, and computer running through this and I still have load to spare. My place actually lost power when I was playing the last map on MW2, and the power went out. All went dark except for my computer. This puppy kicked in and allowed me to keep gaming another 6 min to finish throwing the knife. :)

Seems to run cool.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Power in the North East sucks so any electronics should have a battery backup. Also, don't connect the cable modem to this as it can cause signal problems. (according to the cable guy.)

Stay away from third party battery replacements. I have bought many and they last 6mo to 1 yr. Pay for the APC brand which last 3 years.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat unit

Pros: Great UPS, have had it for over 2 years, never had any problems through the power outages. The display is nice, particularly the time remaining and load wattage.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: To the "beware" poster: how are you measuring the voltage? Only higher end meters will read a simulated sine wave correctly.

3 out of 5 eggsre: beware

Pros: reasonable price

Cons: To the reviewer named "beware". Is it true that when this unit switches over to battery power, it drops to 80V? If that's the case then it won't be able to power many recent PSU's in the battery power mode. I've checked APC's docs but nowhere does it mention about the unit dropping to 80V..Anyway to test this without harming my computer?

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: High VA / wattage rating
Reasonable price
APC's solid track record of Linux support

Cons: Heat dissipation - I'd love it if there was a way to make a UPS that didn't heat my room so much, but the laws of physics are what they are.
In order to switch modes between the LCD being always on or only on when you press a button, you have to turn the unit off first. Not a big deal, and there's only so much you can do with two buttons, but be aware if you're the type who can't make up their mind at unboxing time. ;)

Other Thoughts: We get a lot of brownouts and momentary cuts where I live, and this unit has handled all of them flawlessly. I purchased a second one later and run them side-by-side - I have them far exceeding my actual normal wattage needs, so I have enough battery time to finish an essay and print it if necessary.

Pros: the LCD gives you a lot of information as to the load and estimated runtime

Cons: when it switches over to battery power, it drops to around 80 volts.

Other Thoughts: you may think it will keep your equipment during a power flux or outage, but make sure your equipment will run with just 80v instead of 120v. even if the VA rating of your equipment is less than half of what this UPS is rated at, if it needs more than 80v it will not stay on.

Supply with 2 Internal HDs,3 External HDs,Monitor,Printer,Router,DSL Modem and Powered External USB 4 Port adapter and LCD only showing 20% use and showing I have 28 min of Battery backup. I like the Online Software and the different options it shows.

4 out of 5 eggsA reliable unit

Pros: Plenty of power to run pretty much anything you would normally want. Handy LCD screen to show usage data. Inexpensive

Cons: On one of the two units that I use LCD light failed after 6 months of usage. I could have used warranty but I didn't want to bother.

Other Thoughts: I have two of these units. One of them protects the media room. I've tested it and it managed to run 72" DLP TV, receiver, XBOX360, PS3, Wii and desktop PC that I use as HTPC all at the same time with still some power to spare.

3 out of 5 eggsdefective/damaged

Pros: looks and operates the same as my BackUPS XS1300, but unlike the XS1300, this RS1500 does NOT work flawlessly.

Cons: the batteries do not reach a full charge, so UPS backup time is significantly compromised/reduced. this particular UPS does not perform according to the advertised specifications.

Other Thoughts: i plan to RMA the unit, hopefully the replacement will be OK. i wonder if these UPS' are subjected to *rough handling* during shipping, which causes damage to the lead acid batteries? my RS1500 arrived with some minor damage to the box, although the unit was still sealed (mostly).

i think newegg ought to stress the importance of 'proper handling' of sensitive electronics to the courier companies that do their shipping.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Value

Pros: While the LCD may seem superfluous, it is actually a great feature, especially if using with something other than a PC where you cannot install the moitoring software. The LCD tells you everything you need to know about the units status. Not sure how much adding a device will impact your capacity? The LCD will tell you without any doubt. I have been replacing all the UPS units at my company with this model and they have all been working great. Due to our location, we do frequently get power brownouts and short duration outages and these units have held up great compared to many others that could not survive the more than occasional power fluctuations.

Cons: Had one unit (out of many) that came defective. Contacted APC technical support and they were very helpful in replacing the unit within just a couple days. This is only under the "cons" section, since it is disappointing to have to deal with a defective product. However, APC handled it extremely well and much to my satisfaction. Much kudos to APC support!

Other Thoughts: The negative review I see on here is obviously from someone who is overloading the UPS and is not aware of what the power ratings mean. This unit should be more than capable of support most average computers. A higher end computer with very large power supply and multiple large monitor setup may be pushing the limits. For very large high end machines, you might need a little larger capacity unit. Or, you don't overload the unit and if you want to power multiple monitors, get and put them on their own UPS separate from the main PC's UPS. Be sure to add up all the wattage on everything you expect to plug in and make sure it does not exceed the stated wattage of the UPS you want to use it on. It's simple math, just add it all up....

5 out of 5 eggsSo far so good.

Pros: Small enough to tuck away, and only have the display showing. Quiet. Good info available via the LCD. More than enough outlets for all types of connections.

Cons: Smell of plastic melting, but I read in other reviews that it is because it is new, and it will go away soon enough. Only 340 Joules.

Other Thoughts: The only thing I can think of is to make sure if you want full surge protection also to pair it up with a surge suppressor that has a high Joules rating. I'm currently using only two outlets, and have two 2300 Joules power strip/surge suppressors that all my toys go to. Two computers, a PS2, PS3, 32" LCD TV, DVR, VCR, Cable box, Cable router, Modem, two plug-in speaker systems, and a couple of small chargers for cameras, phones, etc. With all plugged in at once the load is only at 20% with 27 min battery run time. Very nice indeed. Oh, and don't forget to charge it fully for 16 hours before ever turning it on. If you plug it in right out of the box, and turn it on, you run the risk of it failing early. Read up on it if you don't believe me.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent

Pros: --It works as advertised and then some. Has no problem keeping 880 watt draw up for at least a little while.
--This supports my media server, 2 play stations, 46" TV, XBox 360, Receiver, and Wii. (Note these are never all on at the same time.. otherwise the draw is slightly over the rating of the UPS.)

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Its APC. I have never had a problem with them.

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible Experience

Pros: Solid built unit, battery came with about a 70% charge and system could easily handle a system with a 750 watt PS and 2 x 20" LCD monitors. I have trusted and used APC UPS for years now and trust their products. APC Powerchute software works, even with Vista and puts the system to sleep during a power failure. This purchase was to upgrade an ES500 that could no longer hold the load of a new computer

Cons: Unit would not go on-line on arrival. Despite a inspected by and test report from APC this UPS refused to draw power from house circuits limiting the usefulness of a UPS that will only work with the initial 70% charge that ships with the battery. APC customer service was of little help only repeating trouble shooting steps already covered in the manual and stating that the UPS is not recommended for my setup. Despite provide information APC customer support degenerated to circular questions in which I was repeating the same information again and again.

Other Thoughts: Be careful, with shipping and restocking fees this product cost me nearly $100 just to discover that the unit was unsatisfactory and that APCs customer support was pitiful. This is a heavy item to have to ship back to Newegg should you be unfortunate enough to receive a bad unit. Despite Neweggs great support I should have gone retail with this item.

4 out of 5 eggsVery solid

Pros: Nice unit, I trust APC, will run my system for 20 minutes on battery. I believe it would stop a direct lightning strike, seems very solid indeed. Love the LCD easy to use.

Cons: Battery door was broken from the factory. Very minor problem.

Other Thoughts: After hooking up the batter I noticed the latches on the battery compartment door were snapped completely off. Not a big deal. Just slide the door into place even though it doesn't snap. I'll contact APC to see if they will send me a new battery door, if not I won't even worry about. Otherwise everything is perfect.

5 out of 5 eggsGood solid UPS

Pros: 865 watts, 1500 VA
good price
front display
replacable batteries
connects to computer, software provided works in xp & vista (get apcupsd for linux)

Cons: None that I can think of, except maybe that it's heavy (duh)

Other Thoughts: Powers all my system components (including the monitors) fine without breaking a sweat. Idling at 220W, it projects 21 minutes of runtime. If I bump the load to 340W, it projects 13 minutes of runtime.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Customer Service!

Pros: I'm not reviewing the unit because I agree with most other reviewers, I'm reviewing their customer service. I purchased my unit from Newegg and it was defective. I contacted the APC customer service through the feedback option in the included software. A CR gave me steps trying to fix it, but that didn't work. So he immediately took my personal info and created and RMA for me. A few days later I received a new unit and I sent them back the defective unit using the same shipping carton as they instructed.

Cons: I had to pay for shipping back the defective unit which cost about $20.

Other Thoughts: I'm glad that Newegg offered the free shipping on my unit.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks as advertised

Pros: Form factor is excellent keeping the cords in the rear of the device. Considering the power output, it's quite small. About the same size as my old 350W Belkin UPS

Cons: As is becoming more and more common with newegg, the unit was shipped in the orginial box which is NOT a shipping box. The box end was sliced with a box cutter and not surprisingly a portion of the box was crushed in shipping. Luckily the device arrived in tact but I'm getting tired of this roulette game with shipping.

Other Thoughts: I didn't deduct rating eggs due to the poor shipping conditions. The software works great in Vista Home Premium X64

5 out of 5 eggsHey Guys, Dont all of you forget the below feature.

Pros: I purchased the LCD APC UPS for vista when I found that the harddisks and fiber channel disks have a advanced setting for performance only to be used without power failure. I have a gaming system and I get more performance now. There is a way to keep the lcd display on the power supply to always on. Look at page 3 of instructions and don't junk you APC.

Cons: No kensignton slot for lock.

5 out of 5 eggsNearly flawless

Pros: Silent operation. Nice display. Loads of watts and runtime. Plenty of outlets. What's not to like?

Cons: One-button interface with push-hold push-release etc isn't my favorite way to change settings but you can probably just leave the settings alone for most uses.

Other Thoughts: I have been using APC backups for around 12 years and never had an issue. A few weeks ago I bought a 800va XS series locally and plugged it in to charge. The cooling fan started whining away immediately. I thought ok - it's charging right now but it will shut up later. 12 hours later it was still running noisily. Thats when I looked up other reviews and found that the 800va XS's fan runs constantly. Surprise! Never had an APC back up that did that before. I took it back for a refund, and decided to order this one instead. Thankfully no problem with this model - and gives me more run time to boot. Cost a little more but I think it's a proper value for the money.

5 out of 5 eggsUltimate Affordable Power House Back-Ups

Pros: Voltage, Wattage, Load Status, Power Status monitoring build right in. The best part about this UPS is the fact that the LCD provides you with everything you generally would ever really need.
APC's Guarantee and Warranty is to die for, the fact that even after the warranty period has expired, APC has had a good history of continueing to support their product. An example being that an expired APC unit had failed during a lightning storm and all the electronics connected to it fried. Not only did APC replace the unit with a newer better version of the unit, they covered the cost of replaceing the eletronics that were connected to it. You simply CANNOT beat that.
Rated Power Output does precisely what it's rated to do. People with relatively hefty computer running high powered computer components really can't get much better then this. Even with a high end triple card video card solution and either AMD or Intel's highend solution, this sucker will handle it under full load. Worth IT!

Cons: ... ... ... ...

In all honesty, wouldn't even consider the cost a con, it's a major pro... Excellent price.

Other Thoughts: Don't hee and haw over this sucker, the price is more then right, the power is more then enough, the battery backup time is more then adequate. You simply can't beat APC, this unit is probably the best thing you can get without getting into the thousands of the dollars. The size of the unit is actually very appropriate, the number of backup and surge plugs is adequate.

Typically I have a 52" LCD HDTV, Xbox360, Wii, a Powerful Computer, Route, DSL/Cable Modem, External Hardrive, and another alternative device such as a cordless phone all plugged into the APC units that i've used. My Previous APC 1000VA model that i bought back in 2001 just wasn't able to cope with the recent machine i've built as i was exceeding the 600watt limit and causing the unit to register an overload. With this unit i'm able to run all that plus some extra things with plenty of headroom left over.

IF you don't have an ABSALUTE need for top end power, consider APC's 1300 or 1000VA's, you can't go wrong.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent Product

Pros: More than enough power for my outages, peace of mind that my equipment isn't going to get damaged from my less-than-reliable grid...

Cons: Found this identical product for $40 cheaper at a local big box store a month later...

Other Thoughts: APC is the brand I trust in; never had a bad product from them and will continue to buy them in the future. Probably will buy another for my other computers.

5 out of 5 eggsBrownouts in my area

Pros: Price, LCD Monitor is informative and can see how much power I am using. I am only using the unit for power protection on critical devices as I have been having brownouts more and more often. I do not use the ethernet or cable protection. Had a brownout 2 days after I hooked it up and I didn't loose my work!

Cons: none.

Other Thoughts: On average I am drawing 350W at idle with my Intel Quad-core Q9650 laptop w/9800M GTX (about 80 - 90W) and Intel Quad-core Q9650 desktop w/ GTX 275, 4 hard drives, and 2x 23" Samsung 2343BWX (40W each).

I do not plug in my speakers or printers to the battery backup as it is not recommended or necessary.

I draw as much as 550 - 600W when I am playing Eve Online with 3x clients running at once.

Other Devices in my tower:
ASUS Maximus Extreme Motherboard w/Intel Quad-core Q9650
OCZ Platinum 8GB DDR3-1333
Hauppauge WinTV-HVR 1800
2x Maxtor SATA I 300GB and 2X Seagate SATA II ES.2 750GB
EVGA 01G-P3-N959-TR GeForce 9500 GT 1GB (for TV on third monitor which is not connected to APC battery)

5 out of 5 eggsThis UPS is Rediculous!

Pros: The LED front panel display is almost a must-have in this generation. 865 Watts is a LOT of juice for a great price (I only use about 300 as of now). PowerChute software actually works very well connected via USB - lets me know when things go wrong and will shut my server down after a certain period of time. This beast made me shine in front of my boss when the power went out during work hours.

Cons: Very heavy, awkward to connect the battery upon arrival. Disposing of our old UPS units was a pain.

Other Thoughts: Keeping things powered is critical, so a UPS unit is something you should never go cheap on. Currently I have 2 servers, external drive, and a CRT monitor (LOL) connected. Twice we've had a power outage and both times I've had to do absolutely nothing about it except tell everyone to turn their computer back on... that's just nasty.

5 out of 5 eggsIt works great

Pros: It has plenty of room to handle the requirements on my rig . . . My older G33kSqu@d UPS would freak out when I put my PC under heavy load. It used to work fine until I upgraded. then I had to get a "real" UPS and this one is awesome compared to that old junk. I'm at idle right now at 270watts +/- 5watts, 31% load on the UPS. If I run 3Dmark Vantage "Calico" test on high settings I peak out around 415w or 47%. I love it. I also like the fact I can monitor what my load is with the sweet easy to read LCD info screen. says I have about a 17 minute runtime.

Cons: none for the price.

1 out of 5 eggsIll conceived product

Pros: The LCD screen is fun and informative. The unit was relatively cheap.

Cons: PowerChute in OSX 10.5 Leopard is agonizingly bad. The version of PowerChute for OSX and the 1500LCD from APC's website didn't install correctly or run at all, and did not seem to support Leopard.

Gave up on that. Now I just use Leopard's built in UPS management in Energy Saver.

The Unit also appears to be insane, having registered 41 events (the battery turns on) in the past 3 days, despite being on the lowest sensitivity (not recommended for computer products in APC's manual), despite NONE of the other 2 computers on the same circuit breaker rebooting or losing power.

The unit actually puts surges back into the line for other appliances to 'enjoy'. Each of these 41 events has caused nearby lights to dim (one time blowing a halogen light out of the ceiling). The lights never dim or flicker if I stop using the unit.

This might be unavoidable, but the computer power supply and speakers emit an ominous buzzing noise when the APC is running on battery.

Other Thoughts: I only run the unit at 35% capacity between 285-350W. None of my problems are from overloading the unit.

The Ethernet surge protection ports on the unit are 100 megabit. Don't overlook that.

APC chat support claims this is the unit functioning correctly.

5 out of 5 eggsThe power house of UPS systems

Pros: I have placed 2 server computers, 2 VOIP server modules, a router and a 15" screen to only show a 21% load. WOW!!! with 25 min. of back up. Great visual front display. And if you read the directions the display can be set to always be on. Very nice and very quite.

Cons: HEAVY!!! but worth it's weight in gold. Also noticed that the output is not a Sine wave (Utility Power), but a Step wave (Digital want-to-be Sine wave). If you have a high end system that has a digital power supply you might run into some overclock problems when on batter power. But for all other purposes it will work with 99.9% of power supplies out there.

Other Thoughts: APC is a great brand for the price and reliability. Worst out the batteries are accessible to be replaced. This will save you $150 on buying a whole new UPS.

Pros: It's heavy witch makes a good Back up . Having trouble installing disc now seance I had to wipe my computer.

Cons: Say's 900 watts. But it's 860, or something like that, if I remember right. I have a 850 watt power supply and is something over 850 so I'm good.

Other Thoughts: Do not forget to hock up the battery inside wires. I thought it was charging and I forgot to attach the wires to the battery. It takes a long time to charge, I had to wait two days before I could use it . HA HA..... I can laugh now

4 out of 5 eggsReally nice

Pros: I was looking for a replacement for my Belkin 1000VA since they are leaving the UPS market and decided on an APC. I thought the display was kind of cool. The software included has lots of features to help you keep track of the UPS status. Vista 64 bit support. Installation was a breeze. UPS was fully charged out of the box. The cable uses a USB which has a USB connection for your computer and a RJ11 type connection whick connects to the UPS itself.

Cons: The display cannot be read unless you are directly in front of the UPS. I was disappointed that the software does not do a deep battery test and only a quick test. They could of made it with 8 UPS power outlets rather than 6.

Other Thoughts: Overall, as compared to my older Belkin, this UPS has two power outlets less and no deep battery test by software. It loses an egg for it. However, it has Vista 64 bit support, easier to use power management software and a cool display as opposed to my Belkin. Always fast process/shipping by New Egg.

Pros: love the features displays all current settings you would want. works with vista 64bit and the included software to keep my computer and networking equipment on.

Cons: listed as 900w is really 865 watts.

Other Thoughts: i was a little worried when i ordered a 865 watt battery because i have 900w tagan powersupply for the computer. was fine. I have the computer, 2 22in monitors, keyboard power, wireless router, cable modem hooked up on the battery side and only run watts on idle 340 on cpu load. works for 24 minutes in an outage at idle/ light work

Pros: This baby will protect your system, Given all the costs in PC's this is a must have.

I live in an appartment building, wich suffers from power fluxuations. Have lost a TV and a PSU already. Now this will creat a more stable environment for my PC.

Cons: The battery hook-up is a pain, the cable is just long enough to connect, but the battery itself is heavey along with the back-up ups.

Other Thoughts: You have to charge this thing for 6 hours before normal usage.

5 out of 5 eggsNice UPS

Pros: Very nice UPS. If you want a new UPS, don't cheap out, go with the industries best, APC. I built a new rig with a 750W PC Power and Colling PSU, AMD phenom II 940 Black Edition CPU, 4 G of Corsair Dominator RAM, a HIS 4850 1 Gb GPU, 2 Seagate 500 Gb hard drives, Creative Sound Blaster Fatal1ty Champion Series soundcard, LG SATA burner, Scythe KAZE Master ACE Fan controller, and 2 IDE hard drive trays. This unit runs all of that with a 17" standard format Samsung LCD monitor @ only 18-20% load. I have a solid 20+ minutes of uptime in the event of a power outtage.

Cons: Heavy, but worth it.

Other Thoughts: With APC's warrinty of $150,000 inssurance of attached devices, how can you go wrong? Every piece of expensive electronic equipment I have is attached to some form of APC power protection. If you choose to skimp out, and buy another brand, the latin term "Caveat Emptor" comes to mind. (means: "Let the buyer beware")

Cons: Only using a 200 watt load drops run time down to 23 minutes, 364 watts drops you to 9 minutes. A 154 minute run time would exist if you have only 10 watts of usage. Otherwise you get plenty of time to properly shut everything down in the event of a blackout.

5 out of 5 eggsNice UPS!

Pros: Nice UPS, comes with good batteries. I have one of these at work (for more than a year), and now one at home too. Handles my 24" monitor and 1000W power supply in my PC nicely.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Make sure if you're running Vista (especially 64-bit), you go to APC's website and search for the new PowerChute software.

5 out of 5 eggsSaved my job*

Pros: I am going to tell the story as opposed to outline all the technical pro's: Picked this up at a local store (had a gift card that took off ($100) and two weeks later I was in an important web-meeting with management and colleagues nationwide about organizational restructuring which was of crucial importance. All of a sudden power goes dead. With all my necessary hardware connected I made it another 18 minutes through the meeting before graciously bowing out just shy of dismissal after briefly explaining my situation. A week after that my supervisor told me that event showcased my foresight in my job for the higher ups. Upper management doesn't exactly have a direct connection with our individual job performances and go off many generalized reports. When it came time to do the re-interviewing process for position changes I was basically a shoe-in.

Cons: None yet.

Other Thoughts: *May not have actually saved my job, but certainly helped.

5 out of 5 eggshad it for years

Pros: I bought it at a retail store. After about a year, a lightning struck a tree out side my apt. The computer was on, the tv cut off. The computer never missed a beat. The tv and box was on an apc surge protecter strip. The lightning blew up 5 cable boxes and 5 tvs in the house. My stuff is still running!

Cons: NONE! same price here that I had bought it at the store year plus.

Other Thoughts: Still planning to get another !!!!

4 out of 5 eggsIf it's not defective, they're great

Pros: Provides great protection especially when your electricity is really poor. Even though our electric power supply is terrible (outages, brown-out) I have never lost a computer or electronic device. I love the LCD output (low amber light that turns itself off so it's not annoying) and being able to adjust the sensitivity without hooking up the UPS to a computer. I also like the cable protection that I didn't have on my BX series.

Cons: I've had about 5 APC defective units over the past 7 years. APC has replaced them all and paid the postage both ways. Of the two BR1500LCD's that I just bought, one is defective. Sigh.

Sometimes I had to fight with them but in the end they've always have come through which is why I keep buying their units. The last time I had a problem (about 2-3 years ago), their customer support was off-shore. That wasn't fun.

Con: Not enough outlets. I have two monitors, a router, speakers, wireless mouse, VOIP phone and several other computer components. There's only 5 outlets. I bought some Tripp Lite ISOBAR8ULTRA 8 Outlets (love those units) to resolve the outlet problem.

Con: Quality control is rather iffy. As I mentioned before, you never know if the unit will arrive defective (not DOA) or will die. Fortunately, all but one of the units have died within the warranty period. However, I keep buying from APC since when they work, they do a fantastic job of protecting my equipm

Other Thoughts: I tell my neighbors to buy UPS's and they ignore me. When they tell me that their computer or TV died during an electrical storm I just shrug my shoulders (I don't say "I told you so"). On one occasion, we were watching TV at night and I noticed that the whole neighborhood went dark. We were able to watch the rest of the movie.

I have a APC UPS on every electronic component and Tripp Lite ISOBAR8ULTRA on other units that don't require battery backup.

Love NewEgg's delivery. Always arrives 2-3 days after I order something (standard delivery). I've been a happy customer for about 7 years.

Pros: good value, and it has lots of monitoring features

Cons: not true sinewave output when on batteries

Other Thoughts: you don't need a true sinewave for computers and most other electronics, however, if you are planning on running something with an AC motor such as a freezer or medical equipment you will want a true sinewave ups. those will probably cost at least twice as much though.

5 out of 5 eggsBR1500LCD does true trim

Pros: Although I haven't purchased this model yet, it appears to be a nice UPS with reasonable features. APC is generally the gold standard in my book when it comes to power protection.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I appreciate Tarrant's detailed review, but was confused by his claim that the BR1500LCD doesn't offer true trim functionality. The tech specs on the APC site clearly claim that this model has "Boost and Trim Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) [which] gives higher application availability by correcting low and high voltage conditions without using the battery." I've conversed with APC tech support over the last couple days and was told that the specs are correct and that there is no functional difference between the BR1500LCD and BR1500 except for the LCD display. They also mentioned that the only functional difference between the BR1300LCD and BR1500LCD is the wattage. So it seems that the entire BR line was created equal in terms of AVR. This is not the case for the BX (BackUPS XS) line, however. These models do not, in fact, offer true trim functionality.

5 out of 5 eggsexcellent product

Pros: APC is the leader in Power Back up units in the industry. Being a buyer for a GOVT computer services and equipment Reseller. I believe the BR1500LCD model is the best solution out there. There are ones that cost less, but APC customer service is bar none. on this modelThe LCD screen is helpful, giving you a read out of battery strength and the watt load your system is generating against the unit. The design aesthetically looks modern. For some, you may ask why buy this here at Newegg and pay for 30 extra bucks in shipping when I can get the BX1500LCD at the local Best buy, or circuit city, or Brick and morter stores? The primary reason is The BR model has boost built in. It provides a "boost" of power during brown outs so the unit does not default to the Battery mode and just switch off. It's useful if you have a workstation or server that you don't want to turn off during brown outs. It also does prolong Battery life of your unit.

Cons: There are no cons. Prepare yourself for that New Unit smell that most talk about. It will however dissipate with use.

Other Thoughts: APC battery Exchange program is bar none. Don't take my word for it..do your homework, research! only you can decide what best fits your solution.

5 out of 5 eggsLove the LCD

Pros: There is no need for an LCD screen on a UPS but there is a want, and APC fills that want pretty well. I spend a lot more time under my desk now checking my wattage usage. Turns out my PC only uses an average of about 150watts... i bought a 1.2 kilowatt PSU for no reason. It's a well built unit for a good price. No problems at all, windows vista 32bit recognized with ease.

Cons: Heavy, but lets be serious, it's a car battery for your computer

Other Thoughts: for a UPS, it's pretty, and again, the readout is fantastically usable

Pros: It Does its job and it does it well!!! I love that it tells me how many watts I'm pulling. It will tell you just about anything you need to know regarding your power, and you can find it all via the LCD screen which is Great!

Cons: I noticed a normal humming/buzzing sound but it seems to have gone away on its own. Again it was a normal sound. Oh and it had a funny New UPS smell to it for about a week but that went away too. I'm really stretching here =)

Other Thoughts: I would suggest this UPS to anyone Good job APC!

5 out of 5 eggsAWESOME!!!!!!!!

Pros: After replacing my cable modem 3 times in one week due to lightning. I decided it was time for one of these. I'm running a self built PC with 3 500 gig hard drives, 12 fans, dual core amd processor, printer, 24 inch HD monitor, 5.1 surround sound speakers, Cable modem and router and I still have 30 minutes of battery run time. awesome product.

Cons: absolutely none

Other Thoughts: I'm running windows vista ultimate and the software supplied works great. Vista, for some reason, displays a small battery icon near the clock which the APC software says it is unable to turn off.

Pros: It works! I live in the boonies in a thunderstorm-prone area and have frequent (short-lived) power interruptions; the UPS has performed fine and has plenty of capacity for my system.

Cons: Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit edition detects it as a "Battery" and shows a battery icon in the task bar. The included software wasn't able to turn this off; however it doesn't appear to interfere with anything.

Other Thoughts: I have Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit and the included drivers and monitoring software work fine, except for the small "con" above.

Pros: Works great. I have 2 these. One has a Q6600 OC'd 3.3, GTX260, Mozart tower with 10 120cm fans, 3 HD's and also has a Core 2 Duo Laptop on it. The second runs a Q6600 OC'd 3.3, 8800GTS SSC, 2 HD's and also an Old Dell XPS P4 3.6, 6800GTO, Dell Laser printer/fax/copier along with my router on it. Both average about 9 mins of run time. I have had the power go out 3 times in the last 3 days and never have to worry about the pc's.

Cons: Price maybe, but you get what you pay for.

Other Thoughts: Wish it had more battery and options to shut down more than one pc.

Pros: Running this UPS on a dual processor Intel server motherboard running two Xeon 2.33GHz quad-core processors. That beast pulls over 230 watts idling. This UPS has kept that machine running stably through many power outages and failures. Highly recommended!

Cons: None.

Pros: This is my second APC UPS back up purchase, and this is an excellent product! I really like the LCD read out, rather than a bunch of idiot lights! I use my 1000v 670 watt for my fish tank, and this one for my PC, since it's a power hog. At idle, my PC draws almost 600 watts. It has easy battery replacement. For the price, you can't beat it!
APC is the best!

Cons: Low joule protection

4 out of 5 eggsincorrect item description

Pros: This display is nice - seems to work. All 8 pins for network protection are present.

Cons: This is an 865w UPS, **not** a 900w UPS. I ordered from newegg believing the description to be accurate - it's not :(

If you plan to plug a power strip into this, or plug this into a power strip, make sure it is from APC or you void your equipment guarantee.

Other Thoughts: Requires you to charge it for 16 hours before using it - seems longer than their other models (the white one).
I wish a manufacturer would make one with protection for 2 ethernet ports.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat UPS

Pros: LCD display is nice. Puts useful information on display when you need it in real time. I replaced a XS1000 with this. The APC computer software is nice and lets you control all aspects of the UPS.

Cons: What will the replacement battery prices be in 3-5 years?

Other Thoughts: Per a conversation with APC support, the XS is retail stores only. The RS and XS are the same and both have no trim, only boost.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Backup Power

Pros: Provides sufficient power to shut down system safely with a power outage--in fact software does it for you. Am running high-end power monster and it only pulls about 1/3 of rated power for the unit. And, about 20 minutes of battery use.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: 36 month warranty. Also, it is best to follow APCs recomendations and only use battery for critical devices--monitor, system and any external drives--so as to have maximum battery life. This is not a device to run you computer during power outages, but to protect system and deal with the occasional power "burp". Price is good for what it does and, with this unit, you have more power than is "needed" and more is always better.

5 out of 5 eggsA lot of nice features for a UPS

Pros: The LCD is handy to check status of just about anything you could possibly want to know. I can check the status for the server without turning on the monitor. Our power has lots or little 1-5 sec interruptions, I bought mostly for protection against that and it works fine. The batteries are easily replacable when they wear out.

Cons: Surge energy protection could be higher.

Other Thoughts: 20 to 30 minutes backup time is good for most outages. It might be nice if it went longer, but you probably have to spend a lot more for that.

4 out of 5 eggsBX vs BR model

Pros: Have not purchased this, still looking for good price and still comparing features.

Cons: None yet.

Other Thoughts: The first review is wrong about the AVR trim function, according to APC website:
There are basically 2 differences between the Back-UPS RS and the Back-UPS XS models besides their names.

1. The Back-UPS RS models have both 1-line 2-wire phone/fax/modem data-line protection and 10/100base-T ethernet protection, where as the Back-UPS XS models only has 1-line 2-wire phone/fax/modem protection.

2. The Back-UPS RS models have both Boost* and Trim** as features of Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR), where as the Back-UPS XS only has Boost. When the input voltage increases above the high transfer point of a Back-UPS XS model it will only go to battery.

*AVR Boost: The UPS is compensating for a low utility voltage. While the UPS can run in this mode indefinitely without any negative impact on the UPS, the circuit should be checked by a qualified electrician if the utility voltage is consistently low.

**AVR Trim: The UPS is compensating for a high utility voltage. While the

5 out of 5 eggsWorks well, no hitches so far

Pros: The guy before me has a much better review and better understanding so make sure to read it. Anyway, it works well and was easy to setup. The LCD read out is nice but not terribly necessary because the bundled software allows you to view the same or similar statistics from your desktop.

Cons: It's not free

Other Thoughts: Works good, no complaints, protects my PC from the frequent instability of our power grid. Good for prolonging the life of your components and protecting against the unseen killer of power spikes. I'm understood that variations in the power coming into your house can burn out transistors in your PC without causing total failure causing your PCs performance to decline slowly over time. Putting it on a battery backup conditions the power and helps prolong the life of your unit.

I'm running an E6700 Core 2 Duo with a 8800 GTX and 2x 7200rpm HDDs plus a 20" LCD monitor. Uses between 200 and 300 watts apparently so I've got lots of room to grow so it seems. Better too much than too little I say.

4 out of 5 eggsNice unit, but beware tech specs

Pros: There are several nice features in this unit, including (1) 1500VA, 875W battery backup, (2) front LCD display, (3) 6x battery backup outlets, (4) 2x surge-only outlets, (5) Phone jack, coax cable, and user-replaceable battery. The front LCD is slick, and displays in/out voltage/freq, current load (in watts and percent of max), and estimated battery backup time left.

Cons: Beware the tech specs listed: (1)the surge suppression energy rating is only 340 joules! This is almost 1/3rd less than other brands at this VA rating. Second, and the biggest con, is that this unit only provides AVR boost and not trim/buck. Which means that during overvoltages, this unit will go to battery mode to provide safe output. If you live in an area with frequent overvoltages, go with a different unit that has true AVR in both directions, so that the battery isn't depleted during Trim/Buck modes. While other non-LCD RS series units from APC have true Trim, the LCD units do not. I confirmed this with an APC tech.

Other Thoughts: Watch out for the BX versions that are frequently sold in brick-and-mortar stores. Though they look like their BR counterparts, there are differences. Check APC's knowledgebase for details.

Finally, on a system equipped with a 17" LCD monitor, QX6700 CPU, 680i motherboard, 2x SATA drives, and a 8800GTX with 850W power supply, the system draws 280W idle, and 360W in intensive games. Even with a 1500VA UPS, this means that average runtimes will be 17 min (idle) and ~7 min (gaming).
