APC's Smart-UPS SUA1500 provides high-performance battery backup and power protection for entry-level to high-performance servers, storage and business networking systems. The maintenance-free sealed Lead-Acid battery lets the UPS run for a whole 6.7 minutes at its full load (980W) and 23.9 minutes at its half load (490W), giving you enough time to close files and protect data in a power outrage. It also protects connected loads against surges, spikes, lightning, and other power disturbances.

Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) ensures that all your electronics are receiving clean power and stabilizes the voltage to a nominal 120V. The award-winning shutdown software automatically saves and closes open files and shuts down the PC in an intelligent and orderly manner, with audible and visual alarms. Count on the SUA1500 and APC to keep your valuable equipment and data safe!

3 out of 5 eggssmashed plug

Pros: battery works

Cons: the plug on the unit arrived smashed. Had to straighten it out. Don't have the time to ship it back. It's in service now. Seems to be working okay, but as usual, shipping is not dependable.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat

Pros: Work great. LED displays clearly indicate status. Keeps computer and networking gear running flawlessly through power interruptions.

Cons: Largish and pricey.

5 out of 5 eggsHigh capacity, high quality

Pros: Handles two heavily overclocked PC's (without monitors) without reaching 50% load. It gets a workout during hot summer evenings, often switching to battery for a few seconds, and sometimes to AVR for short periods. Also, thunderstorms are no longer cause for panic.

Cons: Heavy... I mean really heavy. Burglars would leave it behind.

Other Thoughts: I run two heavily overclocked PC's and peripherals on it. I connected one monitor, a small tv, and stereo to a cheaper APC 750w, 1250 VA model, which works well also. I upped overclock on main PC to absolute limit, hasn't flinched once. Worth the price.

3 out of 5 eggsNew models are noisy, old models are silent

Pros: I have had a few of these models that have lasted many years. These are great high-end UPS units.

Cons: APC changes the technology while leaving the model numbers the same. The older units are completely silent during normal operation since the fan only runs under certain conditions, such as when the unit is running off of battery. The newer units have a fan that is always on and the fan is quite loud for an office environment. It is as loud as a noisy computer fan. You can hear it from over 50 feet away. This isn't an issue for server rooms, but it might be an issue for rooms where you don't want the constant humming of noisy fans filling the room.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Quality

Pros: As an electronics technician I am very impressed with the quality of this product. I acquired this UPS from a failed business when it was approximately one year old (2006). Since that time it has never given me any problems. I have two computers, a 42" LCD television, as well as some of my home entertainment and networking equipment on it and it is only about 40% of max load.

Cons: As others have said, it is very heavy. This is fine as I rarely have to move it. Other than weight, it is great.

Other Thoughts: Replacement batteries are expensive. Mine are approximately three and a half years old, so I will likely need to replace them within the next year. It still passes the battery self-test however.

5 out of 5 eggsMasive UPS

Pros: This UPS is massive, in a very good way. I upgraded from a 680VA APC unit to this one. I am very happy I laid down the cash to get this larger unit. This unit will easily handle anything you can throw at it. In fact, I'm tempted to plug my laser printer and copy machine into this thing. This unit has two vertical columns of green LED ligths, 5 LEDs to each column. The left column indicates how much load you are putting on the UPS (i.e., how much stuff you have plugged in). This is a nice feature, as it gives you a comfortable feeling that you aren't overloading it. My PC equipment uses just 1/5 the capacity so far. The second set of LEDs on the right indicate the voltage level coming out of the wall, and will indicate whether your home voltage level is low, normal, or high. This is another nice feature, since, as it turns out in my case, I learned I have a slight over-voltage coming out of the wall. Smaller APC units do not have these additional LED indicators.

Cons: As others have said, it is heavy. But, this isn't a con, but exactly what you should expect from a unit of this size. It is 53 pounds in a relatively small package. After all, it's basically one large lead battery. I just wish I was hope to see the UPS guy carry this thing to the door. My box had a few dings it it, which is not surprising, as I'm sure UPS has "fun" moving this heavy box around. And, yes, you'll need some muscle to move this thing around the house.

Other Thoughts: Newegg is great. My order shipped and arrived very fast, even with UPS ground. And, this unit has dropped in price since I bought mine, making it an even better deal. I may just have to buy a second one.

5 out of 5 eggsVery reliable, possibly overkill

Pros: Very heavy (good lead-acid battery), way more than enough to handle any gamer's PC (even with multiple monitors, multiple processors, six hard drives, SLI/Crossfire, etc. like I have).

Cons: This is really not a consumer-level power unit. If you have two computers/desks in close proximity then this is ideal, otherwise it's overkill. I've connected two computers, including all peripherals/accessories, unplugged the unit, and it still managed to power both for over 15 minutes.

Other Thoughts: Pay attention to the power rating and have an idea of what your needs are. Most consumers/home users don't need anywhere near this kind of power for their PCs.

Running rock solid since 2005/09.

To those who dislike loud fans: If you run it at a light load then you'll never hear it except during self-test. Expect it to make noise under moderate to heavy loads because this unit also _regulates_ power. Good, quality components (read: HEAVY) get hot and need cooling. The unit moves a lot of air with a single fan.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Extraordinarily powerful, quiet, USB and COM compatible.

Cons: Heavy, very heavy, and very very heavy. Price?

Other Thoughts: I use this at work and it has three CPUs, two flat screen monitors, and a hub plugged into it. The load varies between 1 and 2 out of 5. Very impressed with its load handling capabilities. Haven't lost power since install, so I don't know how well it handles in an outage. If it has a fan, it is extremely quiet.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great capacity

Cons: loud fan (even when the unit is idle)

Other Thoughts: I own three of these. The batteries last about four years, which is probably typical for this type of product.
