Not useful in an emergency
Pros: Works in most cases, batteries last longer than on old UPS units.
Cons: Useless in an emergency. Rejects new batteries until they're calibrated. When Hurricane Irene hit, I had this unit, and I was able to replace the 2 12v SLA batteries with 2 car batteries of the SAME CHEMISTRY which, charged and in circuit, were giving about 2.5 volts more than the out-of-circuit discharged stock batteries. The unit refused to get any power out of my car batteries (which I had charged at work with an EXCELLENT Ctek charger) until they were calibrated, which means running them all the way down (additional annoyance: can't use a PC as load when doing that, halogen lamp is the recommendation, as if we keep those handy). Why is that? Calibration is so you can tell me how much runtime is left, NOT for you to be willing to use the batteries at all.
Other Thoughts: I don't care if car batteries are an officially supported configuration. It could apply to any other batteries the same. Sure I wouldn't be supported if I put in a warranty claim about damaging my UPS this way, but I'm an engineer and I know plenty about battery chemistry. And it's not a liability thing, because they aren't liable for any of this stuff anyway. A UPS is disaster preparedness equipment, but APC's is poorly designed and is not useful if you need to battery swap without power, for no good reason. I hate it when equipment thinks it's smarter than me. It never is. Your UPS isn't equipped with the logic to decide that runtime calibration is far less important than having power during a disaster, so it shouldn't be equipped with the logic to shut itself down when I need some emergency power.
