It also protects connected loads against surges, spikes, lightning, and other power disturbances.

Battery failure notification provides timely warning fault analysis so you know when the UPS need maintenance. The award-winning shutdown software automatically saves and closes open files and shuts down the PC in an intelligent and orderly manner, with audible alarms. 5 out of 5 eggsWhen small devices need uninterrupted power...

Pros: + APC brand name = best reliability available to consumers for battery backup needs
+ High-quality unit that can take a beating
+ Provides surprisingly high power output for its rated capability

Cons: - Could be priced just a little bit better

Other Thoughts: These units are great for small electronic devices, but definitely not for powerful computers or gaming rigs, TVs, home audio equipment, etc. I would at most trust one of these to provide uninterruptable power to my gaming console. Anything more and you run the risk of overloading the battery or draining it too quickly to be considered an effective means of power protection.

These small battery backup units are ideal for providing battery power and surge protection during a power outage, brownout, etc., to devices like small networking equipment (modems, routers and switches), external hard drives, and etc. A game console such as an Xbox or PS3 would be the absolute largest electronic device I would connect to this unit.

These small battery-backup units are still of the same great quality you will find in the larger battery backups from APC. I've owned at least one of each of the Back-UPS ES series over the last few years, and have virtually every electronic device I own connected to one of an appropriate VA rating. I have never been disappointed in their ability to provide protection against surges and brownouts, and to allow for continuous operation during storms or other times when the power blips or sputters off and on for a couple of minutes.

These units are also inexpensive enough to make it feasible to purchase one, have it last for 2-4 years (depending upon how bad your power situation is, this could be an excellent lifespan for one of these devices or it could be just average), and then just buy a newer model from the next model lineup, without feeling like you have wasted any money.

I don't know about you, but I have no problem spending tens of dollars on some basic protection equipment such as this in order to keep my several hundreds of dollars worth of networking equipment safe from power-related failures. It's also nice to be able to keep browsing the internet even after the power goes out.

3 out of 5 eggsOk UPS, some features disabled in software to upsell customers

Pros: Small fanless UPS, ideal for networking closet in your home (Firewall, Switch, DSL/Cable/Fiber Modem, WLAN AP, Atom Server).

Cons: APC Powercute 3.0.2 software for this UPS does NOT show the user how much power the connected devices are using. This feature is available on more expensive APC UPS systems, but apparently not here. Get out your kill-a-watt and the Watt/Runtime Graph to figure out how long this UPS will last with your connected devices.

Other Thoughts: APC should list what Powerchute features work with which UPS somewhere. I'm knocking off 2 eggs for what appears to be a blatant upsell.

4 out of 5 eggsInexpensive Peace of Mind

Pros: Very succinct software that does not seem too complicated or dumbed-down. Does not make a high pitched noise, something I was afraid it might do. Has 8 nicely spaced outlets, and you can pick and choose which ones get battery backup. Battery lasts about 8 minutes on a very powerful computer with monitor and a floor lamp, which is more than I need since I was only protecting it from little 2 second blackouts my apt. was experiencing.

Cons: Is pretty big and heavy.

Other Thoughts: I'm finding that if you live in an area or building that experiences undervolting, even momentarily, or blackouts that last for a half second or so, it plays hell on your power supply, and I even fried a motherboard in this way. Not only does this battery backup guard against all that for the cost of a moderately priced power supply, it can guard several devices at once. The software can also keep you well informed of if and when you had power surges, undervolts, and blackouts, and what the backup did about it, and gives you and estimate of how long it can protect you under current use.

4 out of 5 eggsProtecting Home Server

Pros: Good specs from a reputable company at a consumer price. This model is a great fit for backing up my network.

Cons: The battery comes with one lead disconnected for safety. I'm sure it makes things safer, but its kind of annoying to have to attach it.

Other Thoughts: I'm using this UPS in my home to protect my home server and my network (router, switch, modem). The automatic computer shutdown software works great with my Windows Home Server 2011 OS.

5 out of 5 eggsworks great

Pros: very reliable and lasts a long time

Cons: kind of pricey

Other Thoughts: I've tried other brands because they were cheaper, etc but always ended up going back to apc due to reliability. Learned my lesson finally and just stick with these.

3 out of 5 eggsWhen the battery DOES die

Pros: Software to complement hardware;
Plenty of outlets;
All that a battery-backup for the right size office needs.

Cons: When the battery doesn't hold a charge anymore (it's dead), very difficult to locate a replacement battery.

Other Thoughts: I really don't want to buy an all new surge protector when I know all I need is to replace the battery. APC needs to give their customers a source for the battery.

5 out of 5 eggsJust what I needed

Pros: Extremely easy setup, was immediately recognized by my Unraid linux server. Providing 330 Watts it was high enough to be used for my desktop, server, router, cable modem and switch.
3rd party software for windows allows my desktop to connect to the UPS (which is hooked via USB to my Unraid liux server) to obtain status and notifications via ethernet.
Works perfectly

Cons: Absolutely none.

Other Thoughts: This unit, for the price, is an amazing deal. As with all UPS, make sure to check the watt requirements of your equipment and buy a UPS based on that first, then find one that supports the watts you need with the VA you want for run time.
