The APC BE450G incorporates a variety of features to make it the "greenest" battery backup in its class while still offering reliable power protection for your computer and peripherals. It uses a highly efficient design to save energy and has an RoHS (Reduction of Hazardous Substances) certification to help reduce the toxic materials in our dumps.

The APC BE450G has eight outlets, four of which are linked to the battery power, with four providing surge-only protection for less critical equipment. The maintenance-free sealed Lead-Acid battery lets the UPS run up to 9.4 minutes at its half load, offering you enough time to close files and protect data in a power outrage. It also protects connected loads against surges, spikes, lightning, and other power disturbances.

Battery failure notification provides timely warning fault analysis so you know when the UPS needs maintenance. The award-winning shutdown software automatically saves and closes open files and shuts down the PC in an intelligent and orderly manner, with audible alarms. Count on the BE450G and APC to keep your valuable equipment and data safe!

1 out of 5 eggsWorked once

Pros: Works as a surge protector

Cons: Doesn't do what it's meant to do. The first time my power went out it stayed on for about ten minutes and since then has turned off instantly every time.

5 out of 5 eggsNo Probelms

Pros: Have 3 of these now, they are cheap and provide enough power to work the computers for 15 minutes and shutdown in a controlled manner.

Cons: It does not connect with the business version of powerchute. I would like to monitor and manage these devices in a central location and know when they need replacing.

1 out of 5 eggsComplete waste of money.

Pros: For me, none.

Cons: This stupid thing has caused way more problems for me than it could ever make up from it's intended functionality. I bought it because my power used to flicker fairly often, enough to cause my computer to freeze or lose power. Decided to pick this up so that the battery backup would provide enough power to keep the computer on during these flickers. It has worked maybe once. Aside from that, it will randomly just cut power to the computer and emit a screeching whine, and I'll lose whatever I was working on, never as a result of anything to do with my power. No flickers, no power outage, no nothing, yet the unit will just freak out and suddenly turn off my computer.

This has happened a number of times, and I'm lucky that I've been home to turn the thing off, or it would just screech for who knows how long and tick off all my neighbors. The software that you can install for it is supposed to keep track of power 'events' yet every time this happens, it records nothing.

I've contacted APC support twice about it, the first time they recommended that I leave it off but plugged in for 24 hours to charge the battery. Did that and it was fine for a while, but didn't stop it from cutting power again. Then for a while the software said the battery needed replacement, contacted support and they told me to disconnect and reconnect the battery cord. It took away the message saying it should be replaced, but of course didn't stop this issue from happening. At this point I'm done with it, I'd rather deal with the now-rare power flicker and a normal surge protector when this useless brick will just cut power randomly again for no reason.

Other Thoughts: I wish I had never purchased this piece of garbage and I'll never buy an APC product again.

1 out of 5 eggsUnder Powered/Do your research

Pros: None from my perspective

Cons: Underpowered for most applications

Other Thoughts: I purchased to this to protect my home PC. I plugged tower, monitor, modem and printer into this and initially everything seemed to be working fine. Then the thing started failing self tests and going into alarm (at 3 AM of course) after about three months of use. I called APC support and he went through everything that was plugged into it and told me I had it overloaded and that was causing the fault. He then pointed me to a $400 unit with higher wattage. While I concede that perhaps the unit is underpowered (Guess I should of added up all the wattage my items use), I do not think they inform the consumer enough about the proper application for these. Based on what the APC rep told me this is only enough power to run Point of Sale systems, Laptops (useless application) and other small electronics. He went on to say that most desktops will actually require a much larger UPS. I am going to yard sale this one as I have had it too long to return it and get a 1200 Watt UPS, NOT an APC brand as they want to much for that size...

5 out of 5 eggsA great backup!

Pros: -Battery Backup
-Software controlled (optional - see other thoughts)
-Has a 4 port surge protector too

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: We use these both at the office and it lead to my eventual purchase at home.
As mentioned it has firmware that can control this via usb. It tells you the battery status and life %, estimates of how long the system can run under battery, and a bunch of other things. My favorite is the ability to turn off your pc when the % hits a certain level, this is very useful for a RAID. Also, very useful for safely shutting down all pcs on the network in the event of a blackout.
It also has a 4 port surge protector incase you want to plug in a few more things without taking battery life (useful considering it takes out an outlet). This is great if you bought it to backup a monitor/computer and don't want to drain battery over a printer or speakers.
We only had one fail here and purchased many. It works, but every now and then it fails to run off of battery in the event of a blackout (the battery also frantically beeped out of nowhere on 2 occasions). We ran tests with the firmware (before and after reseating the battery) and they are inconclusive showing no sign of issue with battery life - so I do not know where to go with that one. (not a complaint, could just be faulty wiring at that specific workstation - we actually relocated it recently and no complaints so far). Basically what I am saying is that the event of getting a dud are literally 1 in a million.

5 out of 5 eggsWhat you come to expect from APC

Pros: 1. Plug and Play (Relatively you do need to pug in the battery)
2. No software required to have it shut down windows when the power goes out
3. Ample power plugs
4. Uses USB
5. The cord has a really nice end that is also out at 45 deg
6. Silent not a single fan to worry about

Cons: 1. Really heavy (Then again what UPC is not?)
2. Really annoying loud beep (But then again I guess that is what you actually want, I just kinda find it annoying)

Other Thoughts: I have 2 of these now, I have one for my networking and NAS system and I have the other hooked up to my personal server. ( Not in the same location as the other )

I will tell ya what I sure do like them, I really like being able to just plug the USB into my server and have windows take care of a controlled shut down in case of a power outage or just a little brown out.

I also have a Pro1500 that I use on my work station, you pay a little more for APC but in my experience you get more.

5 out of 5 eggsGood UPS for light loads

Pros: These smaller Back-Ups UPSs are handy for many sensitive electrical devices including cable modems, emergency lighting, etc. They are small enough to be portable and convenient with a modest price point.

These small footprint UPSs can prevent a lot of electrical damage to electronics from surges and brown-outs in addition to providing a short run time in the event of a complete power outage.

Cons: Depending on how much load you apply the run times are relatively short.

Other Thoughts: The "overview" for this product states that all APC Back-Up UPS come with a three year warranty yet the "details" section states that it only has a 2 year warranty - which is more likely.

Pros: ~Gives me 15 extra minutes as advertised. Even with a dual-CPU 1U server.
~Software allows my system to automatically, gracefully shut down before power runs out.
~Has already saved me two potential headaches.

Cons: ~A bit large/heavy.

Other Thoughts: As usual, Newegg provided quick, efficient service. :)
