4 out of 5 eggsNo issues

This review is from: APC BR1000G Back-UPS Pro 1000VA 8-outlet Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)

Pros: My work uses this company for their backups, so I had experience with them and went with this. I bought it to power my router and cellphone mini-tower (my carrier has a dead zone in my neighborhood, but I didn't want to switch), I was worried about loosing phone service with power fluctuations. I have a lot of power fluctuations where I live, not sure why given that I am in a major suburb of a major city.

- The display screen does not stay on all the time, you push a button and it displays. I like this because it doesn't light up the room when the lights are turned out.

- The unit has a master outlet that can sense when a computer goes into power-save mode, and then puts the slave outlets into power-save mode as well. Since I'm not using this for a computer, I have no idea how well this works, but it is an interesting feature. The feature can be switched on and off, you don't have to use it.

- Has cable isolation for coax cable line.

- Works well, I have had a power fluctuation since I bought this and everything stayed on.

Cons: - Only 4 of the outlets are battery backup, the other 4 are only surge protection. I didn't realize this when I bought it, but it does specifically state this in the specifications so it is my fault for not checking carefully. Luckily I only needed exactly 4 outlets to keep everything running (router, modem, mini-tower, cable box).

- I did notice the plastic/chemical smell when first opening the box and first using it, as someone mentioned below. I noticed it for at least the 1st week of use. I don't notice it now, but I'm uncertain whether I'm used to it now or whether it has dissipated. It is in a finished basement with a family room and I spend a lot of time in there.

Other Thoughts: - I had a different model (but still APC) die at work after 4 years of use. I am uncertain what lifetime one should expect for this sort of product.

- Make sure you only need backup for 4 outlets!

- Note (to those who are less physics-savvy) that the amount of time you get on a battery backup is dependent on the power draw. This unit claims anywhere from ~3-20 minutes depending on the draw. The unit has a bar indicator that lets you know how much power draw is on the backup outlets. The telecom router equipment I have connected (all 4) are only using 1 bar, so I expect a longer power supply time.

- Also note that although the unit's number contains "1000", it only supports up to 600 W of power. This may be less than a desktop.

2 out of 5 eggsBuying a UPS rated only in VA is a BAD idea

This review is from: APC BR1000G Back-UPS Pro 1000VA 8-outlet Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)

Pros: .

Cons: I've found, by experience, that buying a UPS rated only in VA is a BAD idea. You need to find the rating in watts, and check that this rating is adequate.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for taking the time to review our BR1000G. It is correct that we size solutions based on the required watt rating and not the VA rating of the UPS. We apologize if this caused any confusion when researching our units.

5 out of 5 eggsWorking as expected

This review is from: APC BR1000G Back-UPS Pro 1000VA 8-outlet Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)

Pros: This UPS has been working flawlessly now for 7 months. It's already prevented power interruptions of my home business computer on at least one occasion (power seems to go out in SoCal a few times a year wherever you live). It's a big, solid unit with a very user-friendly display and interface. This brand was recommended to me by a friend who's an IT pro, and so far it's lived up to billing.

Cons: None so far.

4 out of 5 eggsJust what I needed

This review is from: APC BR1000G Back-UPS Pro 1000VA 8-outlet Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)

Pros: -Management is very straight forward on the application
-Helped regulate the issues with my house wiring (more below)
-The Master socket/Slave socket power feature is awesome. I have my PC Plugged into the master and it is set that when the power draw is below a certain limit (IE the computer is off) the monitors will not get ANY power at all as if they were unplugged. Exceptional feature APC.

Cons: -I cant find how to have the LED Display always on or turn off the button LEDs. I didn't look at the manual or anything like that and spent a solid 2 (two) minutes.

Other Thoughts: I bought this because my house's wiring it total S---. The entire second floor (master bed, master bath, and secondary bedroom) is all on one 15 amp circuit. As a result if I run my computer, TV, AC, and the other room's TV and AC, we have power fluctuations. With the battery backup I loaded my PC (600W from the wall when fully running) and my TV plus consoles on there. The fluctuation have dropped substantially. I know the ACs are the cause but i would need a more powerful Backup solution for 4 months vs year round.

5 out of 5 eggs4 years of protection and still going

This review is from: APC BR1000G Back-UPS Pro 1000VA 8-outlet Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)

Pros: I built this PC in 2009, by 2011 the memory had fried. As part of my diagnostics I discovered that my house has a bit of dirty power, finally I knew why cable modems kept dying on me.

Anyway, I replaced the memory, bought this unit, and my PC is still running like new without any signs of degradation. Since the beginning I hear a relay or switch flip over a few times a week during minor power events, a reminder of the unseen hardware killer and my steadfast protector.

Performance in an outage is as you'd expect. A clear but not constant alarm, just enough to make you investigate, like a smoke detector in need of a new battery. It'll give you a few minutes (time displayed on screen) to save your work and shut down, although it will protect your sleeping computer for over 10 hours. I once muted it because I was tired and didn't want to wait for my PC to wake up. In the morning, with the power still out, there was still more than enough battery for a proper shutdown.

I have yet to encounter any failures, breakages, or quality issues and approx. battery life during outages is still the same.

Cons: Like someone else said, it won't host odd connectors without obstructing other slots. But they're not too crowded for standard stuff, and a power strip can take care of any issues. Just don't connect more devices than the unit can supply. Not enough for me to take an egg.

Other Thoughts: Be smart with your battery vs surge slots. Only keep your computer, monitor, and necessary peripherals (like external hdd) on battery to limit battery drain. But do make use of the surge slots to protect things like cable modems and other delicate devices.

5 out of 5 eggsAPC Has gotten much better

This review is from: APC BR1000G Back-UPS Pro 1000VA 8-outlet Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)

Pros: I've been using APC for years, and not because they were a good brand, but because they were really the only choice. However, against the industry standard of middle-fingering the customer because you have all the power, they have have improved greatly on their products. This, as well as the 1500, have been running flawlessly in my office and now at home for years. No failures, no battery replacements. The software is decent and I don't feel like I'm wasting mine or the company's money anymore.

Cons: Actually, none.

4 out of 5 eggsDoes what its supposed to

This review is from: APC BR1000G Back-UPS Pro 1000VA 8-outlet Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)

Pros: Nice UPS for the price range. 2 batteries, no fluff, just works.

Cons: no way (that I have found ) to have the led panel stay on. Power chute software a bit bloated. USB only, no management nic like its big brother units.

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible UPS

This review is from: APC BR1000G Back-UPS Pro 1000VA 8-outlet Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)

Pros: Compact
Not too heavy

Cons: Regularly fails to re-charge battery
Sub par monitoring software
Frequent failures

Other Thoughts: I've had this UPS for a little over a year when it failed. Called APC and after a short troubleshooting sessions, which did not reveal the cause, I was sent a replacement unit. The replacement unit was up for about 12 hours when it too failed. This time there is an error code (F06). This just happened about an hour ago so I have yet to call APC back. I am sure they will send me another unit but at this point I have zero confidence in their product.

It is time to give another manufacturer a try.
