4 out of 5 eggsso far so good - well constructed

This review is from: APC Back-UPS Pro BR1500G 1500 VA 865 W 10 Outlets Power Saving Back-UPS Pro

Pros: This was a good deal on sale. It backs up my network, digital land line, and work station. Time will tell if the batteries last, but at least they're replaceable. There's also a connection to add an additional external battery pack (which is more expensive than the original unit) - go figure. The Power Chute software installed easily on Windows 8 and gives access to basic configuration of the unit. Setting up the unit was straight forward (install the battery pack and plug it in) and the instructions are adequate -so far so good.

Cons: none that I can think of

Other Thoughts: This unit comes with a 'master' outlet which controls another outlet. If power is lost on the master outlet, it also shuts off the controlled outlet.- not sure if this was really necessary or under what circumstances this would be useful. It's unclear whether this 'controlled' outlet will send a signal to a PC for a graceful shut-down and the Power Chute software configures that for all of the 'on battery' outlets, so this seems redundant. I guess there might be a scenario where someone could use this unit to back-up equipment that is not a PC. There are also several outlets that are direct connections - they condition and have power surge protection, but no battery back-up.
The whole point of a battery back-up is to allow time for a graceful shut-down of a PC and the equipment attached to it. If you live in an area with frequent or intermittent power outages/brown outs, then a battery back-up is useful to keep you up and running during brown outs and for a short time until power is restored.

1 out of 5 eggsBeware of Old Batteries

This review is from: APC Back-UPS Pro BR1500G 1500 VA 865 W 10 Outlets Power Saving Back-UPS Pro

Pros: Nice design.
Intuitive interface.

Cons: Recurring alarms hard to silence.
APC Support not immediately helpful.

Other Thoughts: After less than 10 months of use, the battery began to fail self-tests.
Contacting APC, the determined that the unit I purchased had sat for over 6 months before I bought it and this isn't so good for the battery in the box.

I have been waiting for over three months for APC to provide a replacement battery.

After suffering through the random battery-test-failure alarms, the unit started to cut the power to all of my devices, turn it back on for about 10 seconds and then cut the power again and continued to repeat this cycle.

So, it was supposed to keep the power on for my devices, it was actually do the exact opposite and doing it in this worst imaginable way.

At my latest request, APC claims they will replace the entire unit. I am hopeful but not optimistic.

I am disappointed in Newegg for selling a unit that had been sitting around for so long.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing

This review is from: APC Back-UPS Pro BR1500G 1500 VA 865 W 10 Outlets Power Saving Back-UPS Pro

Pros: This thing stores a lot of power. It has saved countless editing (and gaming) sessions, and even provides some peace of mind for serious power outages caused by catastrophes (if I needed to be able to charge my phone a few days after power has been out, for instance). The Master/Control thing is really cool, too; when my tower turns on/off, it automatically turns my monitor on/off.

It can keep a gaming/editing session going for a considerable amount of time during an outage. If you're exporting video overnight for instance, and your power goes out for a half hour, this will save your bacon.

Cons: It's pretty heavy and has a highish center of gravity, but I think that's just a tradeoff of having a smaller floor footprint.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Ups, horrible shipping

This review is from: APC Back-UPS Pro BR1500G 1500 VA 865 W 10 Outlets Power Saving Back-UPS Pro

Pros: I think APC makes great products, this particular product is no exception. I have always used APC for the last 10 years and have never had a single failure.

Cons: This unit arrived with damage to the battery compartment cover, some of the clips were broken and some minor damage to the unit inside where battery goes. However, because the battery cover does latch, mostly, and I will not be moving the unit that much, I decided not to return it. It would have been to costly and time consuming to bother with any of the hassle. This is not APC fault, it is the fact New Egg shipped this in product box only, I can only assume that because UPS is known for how well they handle their deliveries, haha, that the heavy battery banging on the compartment cover caused the minor damage. This may have been avoided if New Egg had put this in a shipping box with good packing material.

Other Thoughts: Don't hesitate to get this unit, but do consider the way New Egg ships the stuff they sell, free shipping isn't really free when your expensive purchases arrive damaged.

1 out of 5 eggsBad battery life

This review is from: APC Back-UPS Pro BR1500G 1500 VA 865 W 10 Outlets Power Saving Back-UPS Pro

Pros: Nice cosmetics, does its job well

Cons: Bad battery life; Have replaced battery (with APC brand batteries) 3x over 2 years already. My street power is pretty clean.

Check other forums, but the batteries for this model have reputation for short life span.

Other Thoughts: Buy a diff UPS model

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent replacement for an older BackUps XS1500

This review is from: APC Back-UPS Pro BR1500G 1500 VA 865 W 10 Outlets Power Saving Back-UPS Pro

Pros: 1500VA 865W of power. Sufficient to simultaneously protect my custom NAS made out of an old Dell PowerEdge 860 file server, my main desktop a Shuttle XPC, my 16 port Gigabit ethernet switch, cable modem, Vonage adapter, WiFi router, my actual firewall router I made using an older VIA C7 miniITX computer and all showing up as merely 22% load. Only things not on this UPS are my computer's monitor, my laser printer, and my stereo and other older computer I only use for gaming.

Has all the features of my older now dead APC BackUPS XS1500 that I loved for years. It just died a mysterious death I cannot explain that replacing the battery cells would not fix.

This unit is still fully compatible with the same Linux/FreeBSD apcupsd software package to monitor it's status directly over USB and over the network. Didn't really have to tweak any settings for it to be detected by my file server and my desktop monitor's it over the network via the file server.

The nice black color is nice, compared to the aging white of my older unit that was starting to turn an unfortunate cream color. The LCD display, while I wasn't originally a big fan of is actually useful. Now I don't need to break out my Kill-O-Watt or even log into my PC to view stats on the unit or overall power consumption of all my devices, I love it.

Cons: The only cons I found with this unit and they are really to be expected are that the original spacer and cabling for the cells in the older XS1500 are no longer compatible. So you cannot use them in this unit, nor are the same APC battery "packs" compatible if you buy them direct from APC. I am however please with the improved design of the newer spacer as it involves NO cables and slides into place SO much easier. Actually a welcomed change in my opinion.

Other Thoughts: No other thoughts, excellent replacement for an older APC BackUPS XS1500 if that's what you're used to, otherwise a bit pricey unless you buy on sale. Average price for this (and the older unit from like almost 10 years ago) is about $200.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Product, Good Support

This review is from: APC Back-UPS Pro BR1500G 1500 VA 865 W 10 Outlets Power Saving Back-UPS Pro

Pros: I have always used APC UPS'. They have always been great products. This one happened to be a lemon, but more on that later.
Love the energy saving capabilities, the LED display is clear and bright, the PowerChute Software is very interesting showing me the cost of operation etc.

Cons: My UPS started beeping one night, and it was near impossible to get it to stop beeping. It would stop for a minute and start again. I called APC, and talked to a rep, she had me re-install the batteries, and when it still didn't fix the problem, she sent me a new battery pack. It arrived at the speed of light. (they promised 3-5 days, it was here the next day).

After installing the new battery pack, everything went along fine for awhile, then in the middle of the night the UPS when crazy and started beeping again. I called APC, they walked me through some troubleshooting tips, and we got it back on-line.

A few weeks later, it again went into beep mode, and I called APC a 3rd time. This time, with no questions asked they sent me out a new unit. Again, it arrived the next day (not the 3-5 days they promised.) I installed it and so far so good. I love when a company stands solidly behind their products as APC does.

Part of the new Energy Efficiency implementation is a master plug, with other plugs that will operate depending on the current being drawn through the master. So if you have your computer on the master plug, and you turn on your computer, then the other things plugged into the outlets governed by the master should go on. The trick is that the device in the master has to draw a certain level of energy to turn on all the subordinate outlets. A cable modem doesn't draw enough power, therefore none of the other outlets would go on. This took some troubleshooting and some time walking through the manual to ensure that the UPS was sensitive enough to the amount of current being drawn by the item in the master outlet. This could have been implemented a little better.

Other Thoughts: Hopefully this new UPS will perform like all the other APC products I've had in the past. At one point I owned 9 APC UPS', and they all were fantastic.

1 out of 5 eggsLOUD! quality control sucks!

This review is from: APC Back-UPS Pro BR1500G 1500 VA 865 W 10 Outlets Power Saving Back-UPS Pro

Pros: none

Cons: Noisy! anytime you pull more than 400 watts the fan turns on (support says its supposed to be 600 watst)
any time its charging the battery, the fan turns on
any time its on battery the fan turns on (this is expected)
anytime its above 70 degrees internal, the fan turns on

I RMA'ed the unit with APC, the new unit does the same thing, PLUS it has a bat Ethernet surge protection.

oh, and their support is APPALLING!
They literally asked me why I am connecting my PC to the unit... straight from their chat logs:
Manmita AM: Can I know why are you connecting the PC to the unit?
<My name>: ....
<My name>: so I can ride though blackouts and brownouts? and surge protection?

Other Thoughts: APC ain't what it used to be.
