4 out of 5 eggsReliable

Pros: Fast power switching, silent operation under load. Convenient status LCD. Works great with Synology DiskStations that support UPS. Replaceable battery packs are readily available, so you can get years of use for this unit.

Cons: Generates considerable heat. Make sure this is separated from heat-sensitive equipment or that you have adequate ventilation. Would rather use lighter lithium. Not recommended for rackmount setup.

Other Thoughts: Excels at what it is intended for and is easy to configure. Lead is heavy!

4 out of 5 eggsLots of power. Great features. Poor layout

Pros: One of the most powerful small-office UPS systems around from a well-known Backup Power manufacturer with a long history.

1300 volt-amps and 780watts. Enough power to keep a high-end desktop PC and large LCD monitor running for over 10 minutes. Ability to shut off the beeping alarm with the push of a button is a HUGE plus. Power-saving "Green" mode should extend battery life by powering down (but not off) when PC is not in use. Nice bright LCD with lots of info about load & life, that also auto-dims after 1min while in green mode to save power. One large easy-access battery instead of chaining multiple smaller batteries inside a closed unit will make replacement easier and less of a guessing game (APC sells replacement batteries for $60). Five battery-backed plugs is one more than typical. Also has connections for two DSL items and coax in/out connections, plus a ground-screw for any antenna needing grounding. A rare plus. Built-in fan only turns on when needed (never).

Cons: Plug placement is awful if you have large transformers you need to plug in. Five sideways plugs on each side (5-power backed, 5 surge-only), the bottom two (one on each side) are spaced out for transformers, so if you have two or more transformer items you want battery-backed (like modem & hub), you're going to need some "liberator" cords. And transformers don't always like being plugged in sideways. Also, it would be better if the plugs were on top instead of in back for easier access.

Other Thoughts: Odd USB connection for PC interface/control: RJ45 (Ethernet) to USB cable (included). Better pray nothing happens to it because it'll be costly to replace. Has a built-in fan, but I've only heard it come on once when I unplugged the unit to test it. Gotta think that fan might impact battery life (every second counts). Also means that... despite being a nice narrow unit, you still need to leave clearance on both sides for ventilation.
