CyberPower CP800AVR Line-Interactive UPS System

Offering battery backup protection for home computers and networks, wireless routers and entertainment equipment.

Why you need it: When power goes out for even a second it can result in data loss and hardware damage which can shorten equipment life expectancy. This battery backup unit provides sufficient emergency runtime power to allow for safe closure of open files and proper shut down of electronics when an outage occurs. In addition, it safeguards electronics from commonly occurring power surges caused by storms, activity on the power grid or high-powered equipment turning on and off. Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) stabilizes incoming voltage, preventing chronic problems caused by minor but frequent power fluctuations.

Typical Use

Provides backup power and surge protection for home and small office computers, wired and wireless network routers and modems, home theater systems, game consoles and personal electronics. Safeguards valuable documents, photos, videos and music files from loss or damage due to power fluctuations and surges as well as uncontrolled equipment shutdown caused by power interruptions.

Product Highlights

Surge Protection — Prevents damage to equipment from surges and spikes, including lightning, and also safeguards telephone and fax equipment, cable modems and routers from power surges traveling through unprotected phone or data lines (RG6/RJ11/RJ45). The amount of energy a surge protector can absorb is measured in joules. A higher joule rating means more protection.

Ultra-Quiet Operation — Eliminates distracting fan noise normally emitted by battery backup units.

ENERGY STAR Qualified — Recognized by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as one of the most energy efficient battery backup units available.

Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) — Corrects minor power fluctuations, including under-voltages, without switching to the battery, thereby extending battery life - essential in areas where power fluctuations occur frequently.

Additional Features

Energy-Saving Technology — GreenPower UPS Bypass Design saves energy costs by reducing power consumption and heat buildup.

Computer Monitoring — PowerPanel Personal Edition management software allows for controlling and monitoring the battery backup to safeguard open files and connected equipment during an outage.

USB Communication Port — Allows communication between the battery backup unit and the PowerPanel software installed on the connected computer to enable power management and auto shutdown functionality.

Noise Filtering — Advanced EMFI/RFI noise filtering coils reduce electromagnetic and radio frequency interference that cause disruptive humming and static.

Wide-Spaced Outlets — Large transformer block-style plugs can be connected without obstructing other outlets.

Audible Alarms — Distinctive tones sound when the backup unit is on battery power, overloaded or low on power. The alarm can be silenced if desired.

FREE PowerPanel Personal Edition Management Software

PowerPanel PE is included with this battery backup unit and is easily downloaded and installed on any computer. Its diagnostic screens facilitate complete control of the battery backup unit's capabilities.

Highlights
  • Intuitive dashboard design
  • Real-time monitoring of battery backup status
  • Self-testing functionality

1 out of 5 eggssensative beasty

Pros: does the job of a 425VA UPS...when it works

Cons: sensative. i jerked mine across the floor pulling it towards with me with a power cord. a loud pop noise issued forther, with a horrid dead electronics smell. (note: never strained the power plug feeding the unit). so it worked when left alone but he minute it was moved...blam. deadish.

Other Thoughts: while it isn't giving a fault LED the loud pop and the smell of dead electronics would disagree with that assessment. will post mortem this week.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed after a few months

Pros: Decent Price. Plenty of outlets

Cons: Bought two of these for two different systems. Within 6 months both units started to fail more often than they would work. Most power interruptions simply cause the unit to cut power and start making a loud beep noise. Neither computer is anywhere near the maximum capacity of these units. One computer averages 250 watts and the other 170 watts.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback regarding CyberPower’s CP800AVR. Based on the unique experience described, we recommend that you contact our free technical support to immediately address the issue. I believe the issue you have experienced is due to the PFC power supply in your PC. The UPS is compatible with some PFC designs, but not all.

CyberPower’s new Active PFC Adaptive Sinewave technology is the first to solve the critical compatibility issues of non-Sinewave UPS products working with computing systems using Active PFC power supplies (ENERGY STAR 5.0). CyberPower is constantly working with its partners to ensure customers like yourself are satisfied and we will continue to do so in this case. Please contact us at 877-297-6937 M-F 8-5 CST, or priority1@CPSww.com, so that we can act to completely address your issue and ensure your total satisfaction.

2 out of 5 eggsBad Battery

Pros: Surge protection? (wasn't tested)

Cons: When running tests with computer, monitor and modem plugged into the UPS unit (running at 240-280 watts out of 450 watts), the UPS software continues to say "Remaining time insufficient." When running the self test the battery level drops from %100 to %15-%25. I do not want to take the chance with this UPS destroying my $1200 custom computer. I would like it swapped out for a working one.

Other Thoughts: I am disgusted with Newegg's return policy. Purchased this for $83.99 + $14.99 the service net warranty. Newegg wants me to play $32 for the shipping back on a defective unit. This is the last time time will purchase anything from Newegg. I will not recommend anyone to purchase anything from them.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback regarding the CyberPower CP800AVR. Based on the experience described, the issue appears to be a unique situation. CyberPower offers an industry leading 3-Year Warranty on all of our UPS products, which includes the battery. Please contact CyberPower's Technical Support at 877-297-6937 or email priority1@CPSww.com so that we can trouble shoot the problem you are having with your UPS. If it turns out to be a defective battery, we will pay to ship you a replacement battery. The batteries are very easy to replace. The old battery can be recycled.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great!

Pros: -Good price
-Software works well with Windows Server R2

Cons: -The battery lasts me about 30 minutes

Other Thoughts: For the price I cant complain with the 30 minutes I get out of it on a charge. I run my 550 watt server off of this UPS and it does a great job!

1 out of 5 eggsI have bad luck?

Pros: Has 8 slots to plug stuff into.

Cons: I'm on my second one of these so far. Both have performed the same - poorly. I bought them from a local retailer, not New Egg, if it matters.

Even though the Power Panel says that the UPS is fully charged and has 18minutes of back up time - it doesn't work (on either of the two that I have). The Self Test feature of the Power Pannel cuts the power and causes my computer to reboot. A power outtage causes my computer to reboot. A power surge causes my computer to reboot.

Any time any of those happen the UPS buzzes like an angry wasp, but fails to keep power flowing to my CPU and monitor.

Other Thoughts: I've had other CyberPower UPS's and they worked great; I had no issues with them. However, I have had two 800AVR's that don't work so it's possible that I just have extremely bad luck.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid Unit. Performs well

Pros: Works as advertised, power keeps flowing when the plug is pulled. The provided software, PowerPanel Personal Edition has a decent UI, a decent set of features and information, and seems fairly bug free. Powering a Core 2 Duo E6750 with 4GByes, 4 hard disks and an Nvidia 6600 (system draws about 100 - 120 watts), the battery will last about 25 minutes (no monitor included).

Cons: The system has an "autorestart" function: After line power is restored, the system waits about 70 seconds, and then briefly power-cycles the battery-powered outlets (the power is cut briefly, for a second or two and then restored). An attached computer will sense the off-then-on power cycle and, depending on BIOS settings, restart the computer. (Otherwise there would be no automatic way to restart a computer that has done an orderly shutdown on battery power.) This is all a good thing.

However, if the power goes out, the computer shuts down, the power gets restored, and then during the next 70 seconds (before the autorestart power-cycle happens) the power goes out again, then when the power comes on the 2nd time the system does not perform the autorestart function, which means any attached PC does not get restarted. So there is a 70 second window during which a 2nd power outtage will leave any attached PCs in a permanent off state.

4 out of 5 eggsHmmm...not bad!

Pros: ~15 mins loaded up.

Cons: Can't turn on or work at all without a battery.

Other Thoughts: 1/2 egg off because my UPS battery died in just 3 years without HEAVY power drain. 1/2 egg off because the UPS won't even turn on with a dead battery. This means that you can't even use it as a surge supressor until you replace the battery. The 4 eggs are for reliability. I've observed maybe 4 power lapses and 1 outage where it went for ~30 minutes in 2 years. The last one (the outage) killed the battery so completely that the UPS wouldn't turn back on - replaced it and it's working fine again.

It lasts ~15 mins with a few devices plugged into it. I'm trying to make a profile of all my UPS units, seeing what they run for how long. Never believe the runtimes posted because they're just not true even under ideal circumstances.

U-Verse Residential Gateway and 3 External Hard drives and the UPS battery is drained in ~15 mins.

4 out of 5 eggsPowerPanel Personal Edition SW

Pros: This a very good backup and works really good

Cons: The PowerPanel Personal Edition SW has a problem; not every reboot it start working so you don't have any indication about the status of your UPS. But if you take it off from the startup list and start it manually it works great but you cannot minimize it to your task bar. The manufacture solution is to send you a Serial Cable and work with Windows UPS; well the new Motherboards don't have a Serial port!!!
I hope they will come soon with a new SW version that does work when you boot your computer.

Other Thoughts: None

5 out of 5 eggsVery good UPS

Pros: Good backup capacity, USB interface, useful software. Responsive tech support. UPS worked great until...

Cons: ...the battery in mine died after about a year. Contacted CyberPower tech support and they sent me a replacement under warranty.

Other Thoughts: For reference, this UPS uses a B&B HR9-12T2 battery. You can find these online for about $30, if yours is out of warranty.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent UPS

Pros: I bought 2 of these 3yrs ago,
they work great and am very pleased.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: In my area power does go off often for a brief second, and sometimes for several minutes,
but these keep my pc's up and running.
