5 out of 5 eggsEarly review, will update later

Pros: Small for the capacity. Easy to set up, as in you don't have to connect the battery manually. Has a serial port connection as well as USB, so if I decide to move this thing to back up something running *nix later I know I'll be able to get it working, one way or the other.

Display on the front is bright and easy to read, has some pretty good info on it to boot. It's really cool to see a UPS that will tell you the current power input AND output, how many watts your using, what your expected battery time will be should the power go out, and so on. My old APC sure as hell won't do that. The included software shows all the same information too, which is also great to have.

Probably the feature I'm happiest about: you can turn off the annoying beeping on power loss, though you have to install the software to do it. I CANNOT overstate how much I was looking for that feature. I actually clipped the tone generator wires on my old APC backup unit, I was that desperate for a way to disable the annoying alarm. And really, I'm pretty sure I can figure out when the freakin' power goes out without being beeped to death.

Unexpected bonus: comes with included coax (cable), RJ-11 (single-line phone), and USB A-to-B cables. Good quality ones too.

Cons: The outlets are all crammed together on the smallest side, and configured in a way that makes it hard to get more than one power brick attached. Not a huge problem - not even that hard to fix, just some 6-inch extensions and call it done - but it's a rather curious design choice. A waste of surface area, if nothing else.

The included software is a bit... odd. It's limited in configuring actions on power loss for one: either you turn it off after X minutes of running (where X is no greater than 5), or turn it off when there's only Y minutes of power left (where Y is no less than 5). There's no option to, say, hibernate instead of shut down. There's no way to make the software wait until there's 2 minutes of battery life left. There's no option to just disable automatic shutdown entirely. I know the time is a big issue for me, since the UPS estimates my system will have all of 7 minutes of runtime at typical load. It doesn't take my computer 5 minutes to shut down, we could cut it a bit closer than that.

Presumably if you have the software installed at all your computer is going to try and automatically shut itself down at some point when there's a loss of power, and you may not want that. I know I don't, so I'll likely be uninstalling it. It's a shame, since I really like the informational displays and the event monitoring (low voltage, etc.).

Other Thoughts: This is just my early review on the thing. I'll update this (if I can) as I use it for longer. I live in the sticks where the power does weird things, so I should be able to give some good feedback after a while.

There are some weird features in the software, like the ability to schedule the power being automatically turned on and off. I cannot think of any situation where anyone would want that short of an epically overbearing parent.

The size on this thing is about the same as my old APC 550 unit. If you turn this one on its side it takes up the same footprint, roughly. Way nicer features though.

The light on the front of this is fairly bright, bright enough it could serve as a night light. I could see that getting old for some people, though in my setup it's not a problem. Masking tape would fix the problem anyway.

My cat usually sniffs the hell out of anything new. He didn't spend hardly any time on the UPS. Not sure what to make of that.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat UPS in normal environment

Pros: Informational display and great integration with my windows based workstations and servers. Configurable run times to save battery and silence mode because you know the power is out thanks. Price is cheaper than replacing other's battery's

Cons: The noise suppression is too good. Can't have this UPS on the same line as my X10 home automation devices. I had a APC 15 year old unit plugged in near my lamp control unit without any issues. Upgraded to the new cyberpower unit and all signaling in that room was dead. Wow that is suppression!

Other Thoughts: I have installed 5 of these UPS units for all my electronics. But only found recently that the X10 will not work on the same power leg. Shame really because I really like these units.

3 out of 5 eggsIncompatible with generator power

Pros: Decent battery life under modest load.
Seamless integration with Windows7 power controls
Cool display

Cons: Incompatible with generator power

Other Thoughts: I purchased this to keep my computer running during short power outages and flickers. For that it works great. However it does not work well when the power is out for several hours and I need to use my backup generator for powering my PC and home appliances. The unit beeps non-stop and eventually turns off my computer even before the battery life runs out. Instead of having a true uninterupted power supply, I am forced to disconnect everything and plug-in to the non-battery outlets.

I would understand if the battery refused to charge or something, but my laptop will run just fine off the generator so why should this unit be an exception?

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for your review on the CyberPower CP1000AVRLCD. A typical generator will not power or communicate properly with a UPS. The problem is with the HZ or frequency of the power the generator is producing. Standard electricity from the power company is stabilized at 60HZ, but the power produced by a generator is inconsistent and does not maintain 60HZ. The UPS expects the frequency to be steady at 60HZ and since the frequency is fluctuating that indicates a power or wiring problem.

CyberPower’s “Online Series” of UPS models have a generator mode option. When connected to a generator, the UPS with the generator mode enabled, continues to receive input power, even when the generator output frequency is less than stable. The UPS will take the unstable input power and distribute it to connected equipment in pure sine wave output that is free of harmonics and distortion. Please see model OL1000RTXL2U or one of the other OLXXXX models for more product details.

5 out of 5 eggsBattery lasts on this unit

Pros: Front panel voltage display.
Comes with software for monitoring PSU from your PC.
Verticle design takes up less space than other models.
Has plently of plugs in back for most office needs.

Cons: It would have been nice if they had spaced out or rotated the end plug in order to allow for a wider connector without covering the plug next to it.

Other Thoughts: I have had this unit for about 2 years and 9 months and it is still going strong. I have not yet had to replace the battery. I also like being able to view voltage values at a touch of a button.

I have VOIP and have put my cable modem, router, and VOIP box on this unit, as well as my PC. Twice now the power has gone out and the kids were able to still place calls.

3 out of 5 eggsSoftware does not work with Win 7

Pros: All features I need from a battery backup work, except one (see Cons section)

Cons: Under Win 7 32, the software appears to conflict with Win7's Power Management system. If the PowerPanel software is installed, when the system resumes after a power failure, it fails to resume from hibernation. I have to press the PC's power button twice. The first one is to power it up after power failure. The secound one is to power it up after resume failure. The good thing is that the second power up works. However, it is very annoying since I am using this battery backup for my server in my basement (no monitor, no keyboard, no mouse).

It seems that the PowerPanel software has some sort of conflict with Win7's Power Management settings. This problem does not show up under Win XP.

So my resolution is either to use Win XP, or Win7 32 without the PowerPanel software.

The workaround under Win7 32 is to use the Power Management setting so that it enters hibernation 1 minute when it is using battery power. This will trigger the hibernation when there is power outage.

Sorry... I have to minus 2 eggs because of this issue.

Other Thoughts: I prefer the PowerPanel software to control the hibernation upon power outage, rather than Win7's power management tools. Furthermore, without PowerPanel software installed, I am unable to see the battery status (load, kwh, etc) from my desktop.

1 out of 5 eggs16# Paper Weight

Pros: Pretty blue LCD. Decent software (no logs though).

Cons: Garbage UPS, smelly garbage tech support. Built a PC with high-end components and large power draw, wanted to protect it with a large VA-rated UPS. "That other company" is expensive (for a reason), so I thought I would give Cyberpower a try after hearing good things. Short story: built the PC and it would randomly shut down. After troubleshooting all my hardware over many months, I was stumped as everything tested well. I then had to do something I never had to consider in close to 2 decades in IT with that other company -- consider the UPS. Testing confirmed the UPS. After many unsuccessful attempts to contact their support by phone (long story), I got an email response. In a nutshell, they stated my Corsair PS was too quality, and required a better quality UPS. Ummm ... Wut? Okay, thanx.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for your review on the CyberPower CP1000AVRLCD. The problem you described has to do with PC's power supply. An Active PFC power supply is not compatible with a non-sine wave UPS.

Protecting equipment that uses an Active PFC power supply with a non-sine wave UPS can cause data loss, hard shutdowns or a catastrophic failure.

Why does this happen?
Over the last 10 years, power supply unit (PSU) manufacturers have transitioned to focusing on efficiency issues by increasing Power Factor in addition to reliability, quality and capacity. Problems can occur when using simulated sine wave UPS systems with more sensitive devices and electronic equipment. When on battery power, higher-end workstations and computer systems that incorporate Active Power Factor Correction (PFC) power supplies may unexpectedly shut down or crash entirely when used with a simulated sine wave UPS.

Critical Factor
Simulated sine wave output wave form produces a zero-output state during the phase change cycle resulting in a power "gap." This gap may cause power interruption for equipment with Active PFC power supplies when switching from AC power output to simulated sine wave output (battery mode).

The Solution
The PFC Sinewave Series from CyberPower ensures equipment utilizing Active PFC power supplies do not unexpectedly shutdown or experience harmful stress when switching from AC power to UPS battery power.

With pure sine wave output, the PFC Sinewave UPS systems provide continuous output during the phase change cycle and support equipment that utilizes Active PFC power supplies.

We recommend that you purchase the CP1000PFCLCD or one of our other CyberPower PFC compatible models available at Newegg - CP850PFCLCD, CP1350PFCLCD, CP1500PFCLCD, OR1500PFCRT2U, OR2200PFCRT2U.

5 out of 5 eggsPower Supply

Pros: I am impressed with this new CyberPower psu. I t does everything they claim and is a little easier to work with when confined between a desk and a wall.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: This upright supply is really the way to go if you have a more confined area to work with.
