CyberPower CP825AVRLCD Line-Interactive UPS System

Offering battery backup protection for home computers and networks, wireless routers and entertainment equipment.

Why you need it: When power goes out for even a second it can result in data loss and hardware damage which can shorten equipment life expectancy. This battery backup unit provides sufficient emergency runtime power to allow for safe closure of open files and proper shut down of electronics when an outage occurs. In addition, it safeguards electronics from commonly occurring power surges caused by storms, activity on the power grid or high-powered equipment turning on and off. Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) stabilizes incoming voltage, preventing chronic problems caused by minor but frequent power fluctuations.

Typical Use

Provides backup power and surge protection for home and small office computers, wired and wireless network routers and modems, home theater systems, game consoles and personal electronics. Safeguards valuable documents, photos, videos and music files from loss or damage due to power fluctuations and surges as well as uncontrolled equipment shutdown caused by power interruptions.

Product Highlights

Surge Protection — Prevents damage to equipment from surges and spikes, including lightning, and also safeguards telephone and fax equipment, cable modems and routers from power surges traveling through unprotected phone or data lines (RG6/RJ11/RJ45). The amount of energy a surge protector can absorb is measured in joules. A higher joule rating means more protection.

Ultra-Quiet Operation — Eliminates distracting fan noise normally emitted by battery backup units.

ENERGY STAR Qualified — Recognized by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as one of the most energy efficient battery backup units available.

Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) — Corrects minor power fluctuations, including under-voltages, without switching to the battery, thereby extending battery life - essential in areas where power fluctuations occur frequently.

Multifunction LCD Panel — Displays battery backup vitals for easy monitoring of run-time and power conditions.

Additional Features

Energy-Saving Technology — GreenPower UPS Bypass Design saves energy costs by reducing power consumption and heat buildup.

Computer Monitoring — PowerPanel Personal Edition management software allows for controlling and monitoring the battery backup to safeguard open files and connected equipment during an outage.

USB Communication Port — Allows communication between the battery backup unit and the PowerPanel software installed on the connected computer to enable power management and auto shutdown functionality.

Noise Filtering — Advanced EMFI/RFI noise filtering coils reduce electromagnetic and radio frequency interference that cause disruptive humming and static.

Wide-Spaced Outlets — Large transformer block-style plugs can be connected without obstructing other outlets.

Building Wiring Fault Indicator — LED status light on battery backup unit indicates wall outlet wiring problems, such as improper grounding, that could inhibit surge protection or cause shocks. When lit, a professional electrician should be contacted to correct the problem.

Audible Alarms — Distinctive tones sound when the backup unit is on battery power, overloaded or low on power. The alarm can be silenced if desired.

FREE PowerPanel Personal Edition Management Software

PowerPanel PE is included with this battery backup unit and is easily downloaded and installed on any computer. Its diagnostic screens facilitate complete control of the battery backup unit's capabilities.

  • Intuitive dashboard design
  • Real-time monitoring of battery backup status
  • Self-testing functionality
  • Adjustable high/low voltage warnings
  • Safe auto shutdown
  • Configurable system notifications
  • Power problem event summary

2 out of 5 eggsAll items plugged in had to be replaced

Pros: I have all my systems backed up on a UPS but I decided to get one for a couple of switches, my ATT box, magic jack, etc in case the power went out. I'd still have phone for a few minutes and my network in case something was being moved/updated, etc.

At the time I bought this, it was on sale. For about six months, no issues. And then my ATT box failed. It was about time to replace, no surprise - so another was installed.

However, over the next several days after the first box failure, every item plugged into this UPS failed. Router, magic jack, phone system, switches, and new ATT box.

Perhaps, these items should not be plugged in to a UPS - I don't know, I am not an electrical/tech knowledgeable person. I do know, those items do not require more power than this UPS can provide. And I didn't think it would make a difference what I plugged into it (barring stuff like a heater or a vacuum cleaner...I'm not that ignorant).

I also know that no other UPS in the house has had issues, no other electrical item has had issues and I also have had a whole home power surge protector installed for almost two years now. There were no storms or known electrical issues when the items failed (it took about a week for each item to fail - there would be a few days in between devices).

At this point, I really can't blame Cyber Power - (and I have other models that work just fine). But wanted to mention this - perhaps someone out there can advise if this is user stupidity of some sort or perhaps a faulty UPS.

Cons: I had to replace all the devices plugged into this UPS.

1 out of 5 eggsDidn't last

Pros: More outlets than an extension cord, until it went bad. It likes to beep.

Cons: Doesn't last.

Other Thoughts: No storms or power fluctuations, just reading news and one whole side of the unit goes out (ZERO power now). Battery BU was not worth much at all in the first place considering it did not keep computer and LCD monitor on even during 2-3 second power outage. (my previous APC would allow me to save and shut down properly). Would never consider buying again.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback regarding CyberPower’s CP825AVRLCD. Based on the unique experience described, we recommend that you contact our free technical support to immediately address the issue. I believe the issue you have experienced is due to the PFC power supply in your PC. The UPS is compatible with some PFC designs, but not all.

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible Customer Service

Pros: Works with old power supplies and is heavy enough to prop open a door on a windy day.

Cons: I bought this power supply 3 months ago, and it worked fine until I had to replace the power supply on my PC. Because the new powersupply I puchased uses an Active PFC this unit will not power it.

Most all new powersupplies and computers are going to an Active PFC design, so don't expect this thing to work with anything newer or that you will buy in the future.

After 3 months this thing is worthless to me, the retailer will not take it back and after calling CyberPower tech support I was told there is "nothing they can do". They were nice enough to recomend an alternate model I could putchase for $140 (after spending about that much on this one 3 months ago).

I understand that CyberPower cannot control what new tech gets built into power supplies but for them to be unwilling to do anything for a UPS that is worthless after 3 months of ownership is unnaceptable. I asked about trade in, rebate, coupon anything and the response was "there is nothing we can do for you".

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for your comments and suggestions. I’m sorry you had a bad experience with our Technical Support.

CyberPower’s Active PFC Adaptive Sinewave technology is the first to solve the critical compatibility issues of non-Sinewave UPS products working with computing systems using Active PFC power supplies (ENERGY STAR 5.0). CyberPower’s innovative Adaptive Sinewave UPS technology is an affordable solution that ensures equipment utilizing Active PFC power supplies do not unexpectedly shutdown or experience harmful stress when switching from AC power to UPS battery power. The new CyberPower CP850PFCLCD to CP1500PFCLCD, with Adaptive SinewaveTM technology, safeguards mid to high-end computer systems that use conventional and Active Power Factor Correction (PFC) power supplies. Its automatic voltage regulation (AVR) topology delivers clean and consistent AC power, protecting connected equipment and preventing costly business interruptions.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat strip UPS

Pros: I am using this for my network and home server. I have it mount to a wall in my basement with the rest of the network gear. So it's nice and small for a UPS. With everything connected and server, the LCD says 20min of backup time which is more than enough for a short outage and time for me to shutdown if needed. So far no power outages to test, its only been a few months.

Cons: Only 4 outlets are on the battery the other 4 are regular outlets (power goes out no backup). Would be better to just sell a 8 plug full battery. At least I would buy that.

5 out of 5 eggsA+

Pros: Great product. I forget it's there until the power goes out, and it gives me more than enough time to shut everything off. Been using it for a few years now and the batteries are still good. Better than the AP* brand we use at work.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Great product, highly recommended

1 out of 5 eggsInstructions lack vital information...

Pros: Works as it should.

Cons: User Manual and all other product info is lacking important info needed to set up the UPS and use it correctly. The unit is designed to cause a computer reboot after a period of time following power reconnection by the utility or user plugging it in after removing the plug to test the system. The only reason I know this is from reading a Newegg review of another model of UPS sold by this company. The time period was about 30 seconds when used with Vista 64 and about 75 seconds when used with WinXP 64. So be sure to wait this time period after UPS reconnection/utility power reconnection and DON'T do a manual reboot on your own.

Other Thoughts: If you do a manual reboot of the system the UPS will cause another reboot to happen at the time is programmed to do so. This will probably occur in the middle of the OS booting process already in progress and may possibly damage your boot disc if it is interrupted at the wrong time while reading the drive. I wound up having to run chkdsk on my boot drive to repair errors. Luckily it did not cause me to lose any data but it had to repair the index for the drive.

5 out of 5 eggsCheap and functional

Pros: Came charged
Worked right of the box. Plug and go.

Cons: App on CD didn't work on Windows 7 64-bit (but it wasn't needed because Windows 7 has a fairly robust power management app built in)

Other Thoughts: It came charged.
I drained and charged it three times and it worked well.
The LCD indicator is very informative.
The device chirps on a power loss and chirps more frequently as the battery gets closer to being fully discharged. I did not experience any other chirping as other posters mentioned.

5 out of 5 eggsNo complaints

Pros: Almost fully charged out of package; led read-out of voltage, % capacity used, charge level. Outlets spaced far enough apart.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Second CyberPower UPS I've gotten, this one for a new LCD tv, the other the 600 watt one used for my computer system. Both have worked fine so far. I live in a rural area where brown-outs, surges and lightning strikes are common. Been on my computer a couple of times now when we've had a power outage for a few seconds that before would have caused the computer to reboot, and then be incredibly slow for hours as the hard drive was checked for errors. Computer and monitor didn't even hiccup with the UPS. A lot of piece of mind I didn't have before.
