also consider the UPS Monitoring Software
This review is from: MINUTEMAN EnterprisePlus E1000RM2U 1000 VA 800 Watts 6 Outlets UPS
Pros: I have model: E2000RM2U (a larger MINUTEMAN unit). I'm impressed with the hardware. The hardware has worked flawlessly. Hardware gets five eggs. However in a server environment, software is critical and carries a lot of weight in overall review.
Cons: Monitoring software is terrible. Latest available for the E2000RM2U is SentryPlus v1.4 Build 061311. Installed on Win2003svr. Install only succeeded as local-administrator. Domain admin member could not. Docs and labels on Config forms are poor and unclear. I'm still fighting a bug in notification. I get an email to tell me UPS is running on battery. Once power is restored, I get an other that says Power restored. The 'power restored' emails then continue repeatedly until I restart SentryPlus service. Remember this is software that is entrusted with gracefully shutting down your servers before: a) ruining your batteries with excessive discharge, and b) before they run dry causing an ungraceful shutdown. I'm also still struggling to setup triggers to shutdown my Linux servers in the event of a power outage. The Linux tools offered by MINUTEMAN run on only a few Linux distributions and requires that the desktop environment be installed.
Other Thoughts: Most UPS devices use lead acid batteries, the life of which is significantly shortened by full discharge. As such, unattended computers should be configured to shut themselves off if utility power is not restored within a few minutes. Microsoft Windows has built in features to accomplish this. (check for compatibility before buying a UPS). Most UPS devices also ship with vendor software to provide for automated shutdown, but as I've found, quality and OS compatibility varies.
