The TI-108TK is a ten pack of basic calculators that are designed for grades K-3. There is a storage caddy for when the calculators are not in use. It comes with a poster and overhead transparency to make teaching easier. Since they are solar powered you never need to worry about having batteries go dead in the middle of a lesson.
This review is from: Texas Instruments TI108TK TI-108 Calculator Teacher Pack - 10 units
Pros: These calculators are a perfect size for classroom use with a 2.57" width, 4.44" length, and 0.39" thickness. I have been using TI-108 calculators for many years in middle school classrooms and find them to be very durable. I like the bright blue color of the calculator with the red and white keys (white keys for numbers and red keys for operations). This is a basic calculator and performs the operations as keyed in. Consequently, it does not perform the order of operations. However, in middle school it is usually math teachers' intent to have the students do the order of operations themselves so they learn. It does have a +/- key, which allows students to change the sign of their numbers. In other words, a student can easily key in 4 + (-3) or 4 – (-3). It also has a percent key and square root key. It does not have a square key. Students will also find the memory keys useful, especially when multiplying by pi, which can be stored in memory and later recalled. These calculators are durable and withstand drops from desk height to a concrete floor. The solar panel also gathers enough light in low-light conditions for the calculator to operate. These calculators are also economical.
Cons: I cannot think of any negative remarks as long as the calculator is used for its intended purpose, which would not be in higher level math classes. If a teacher has students who are not respectful of the calculators, then he or she might want to place a drop of super glue over the two small screws that hold on the back panel. Hot glue also works but students can dig out hot glue. By sealing over the two small screws in the back of the calculator, it helps discourage students from trying to take the calculators apart.
Other Thoughts: I bought 10 packs and each came with a attractive and durable yellow carry case, which allows the 10 calculators to be stored together and makes it easy to make sure all calculators are returned. Each calculator also came with its own protective blue cover.
