The standard for financial professionals, the HP 12C has been helping people make smart business decisions for over 15 years. It has over 120 built in functions including, TVM, amortization, bond price and yield, and depreciation. This calculator is accepted for use on the CFP, CFA and GARP FRM exams. Certainly, there's been newer, more complex calculators introduced since, but there's something to be said for the quality of classics.

The HP 12C has all the basics--like calculating APR, NPV, and IRR--and statistics are a breeze. For students new to financial calculators, this is an excellent place to start. The manual reads very like a minitextbook, walking you through sample problems and situations followed by graphs and tables demonstrating the technique--and you can even check your results. The section on creating programs seems to address the more technically challenged, addressing in detail how you could possibly benefit from using programs, but it'll still help you get the job done.

5 out of 5 eggsThe HP 12C is the Gold Standard

Pros: -It does simple regression
-It does Depreciation
-It does TVM
-It does bond math
-It amortization of a loan
-It uses RPN. Once you get familar with RPN you see how much more efficient it is.
-It is allowed on the CFA and CFP exams.
-It isn't overly complicated like some new HPs or other vendors.
-It is the industry standard and for good reason.
-I had mine for 17 years. That's a long time. It didn't break. I lost it an airport and have to order a new one. My old one looked like it was in a war, but never failed!

Cons: -I couldn't name one.

Other Thoughts: -If you are in grad school or work in financial service why would you consider any other calculator.
-It has proven it's weight in gold since the early eights.

5 out of 5 eggsTHE Financial Calculator

Comments: There's a reason financial professionals swear by their HP 12C's: it's the best financial calculator out there. It's very compact, yet feels solid & substantial. The keys are well-shaped and yield a satisfying 'click' and pressed. Most importantly, it can handle most any finance/investment/real estate task thrown at it: interest, amortization, depreciation, etc..

One major issue those not already familiar with HP calculators might encounter is with the Reverse Polish Notation method of data entry: to calculate '2+2=4,' one must press the following: '2', 'Enter', '2', '+'.

This might sound pretty odd, but most people find it's actually an extremely efficient way to enter data once you get used to it.

However, for those that would like the option of using standard algebraic data entry ('2', '+', '2', '='), I would strongly recommend the HP 12C doesn't cost all that much more, but allows the user to choose between RPN & algebraic (in addition to featuring slightly more memory & processor power).
