1 out of 5 eggsSAVE YOUR RECIEPTS AND BACK UP YOUR RECORDINGS

Pros: enjoyed it while it worked

Cons: stopped working, twice

Other Thoughts: i had read the comments here by previous reviewers how their clip zip stopped working, thought i'd play a gamble, and lost. stopped working 4 months after purchase. spoke with support services in india and he had me press and hold the on/off button for 20 seconds, that reanimated it. same situation occured less than a month later, this time 20 second hold had no effect. it SEEMED as if the return process was simple but it FELT like they really didn't want to ship me a replacement. i just got an email saying a replacement is on it's way. good thing i had only ONE audiobook on it, i did not know i had to or it was possible to back up the recordings, luckily i lost only ONE audiobook. save all your reciepts and all the purchase documentation, you might need it! if i were you i'd save all the packaging too. and document everything (example, if it quits, when, etc.) one year warranty from the factory. this clip zip was an upgrade from another (lower priced) mp3 player i purchased from newegg and after this experience if i were to do it again i would buy the next (price) grade higher mp3 player.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Bill,

We are sorry your player failed. Usually a frozen player can be recovered to its original state easily by doing a simple reset. We attempt to troubleshoot the issue because most of the time, simple steps can help resolve the issues and replacements are not necessary. Also, we apologize for you losing content. Usually subscribed content can be re-downloaded from the source without an extra charge.
You can contact us for any additional issues at 1-866-SANDISK or you can submit a support request at www.sandisk.com/support so we can find out what possibly may have caused the issue and assist you towards the resolution of your issue.
Thank You,
SanDisk Support

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Expansion slot, Small clip mounting, excellent pricing for 4Gb model

Cons: Did not last long(3 weeks), cheap earbuds, manual very small(better .pdf version online at Sandisk) Slow reading 32 Mb microcard if full(doh), playlists difficult to make(Winamp works)just leave playlist in music location

Other Thoughts: I liked very much, but in process of RMA without packaging. Did order another(same model and color) while waiting. Unit failed to turn on after 3 weeks, even when connected to computer. Was starting in process of reading .pdf manual and setting other features like FM presets. Replacement earbuds should be ordered with order.

5 out of 5 eggsRobust Little Player

Pros: I have owned this player for quite some time. I live an active lifestyle, and it has kept up well. It has survived backpacking trips, kayaking, road trips, working out, and the like. It has been dropped in a sink or lake on multiple occasions. It has also been dropped on concrete innumerable times. (I am clumsy) It has yet to fail me. Battery life is decent, I usually get a few days between charges. The size and weight are a real plus for backpacking! I got this for $20 dollars on Black Friday, on a whim. At that price, and even the listed $50, it is a great deal. I have always owned SanDisks, and as a brand they have never done me wrong.

Cons: It has developed a bit of a personality, undoubtably due to my own mistreatment. The buttons like to stick and skip a bit, but that is literally all that is wrong. After what I have put it through that is to be expected I suppose. 4GB may be a bit small for some, but I find that it helps me actually listen to all the music I have on the player.

Other Thoughts: Certainly worth a buy if you are in the market for an affordable, well built, and all around excellent player. It will not let you down.

2 out of 5 eggsGet the Clip+ instead.

Pros: - Good audio quality
- Great value
- Small form factor

Cons: - Short battery life
- Screen cannot be read in daylight.
- Frequently plays a loud burst of static between tracks.
- Much slower to refresh tracks. 4gb player with 8gb card takes about 5 minutes.
- Menu navigation has changed and takes far more keystrokes to get around.
- Shuffle seems to turn on and off at will.
- Power button is a problem. Frequently turns on in my pocket but requires a press and a hold to turn off.
- Printed text on the screen is too small.

Other Thoughts: I think Sansa had a great no-nonsense player in the Clip+, but I don't know what they're going for with this one. A lot of features that aren't so useful (like a stopwatch) and less impressive on the core use (playing my tunes).

4 out of 5 eggsA Bargain

Pros: Small and light. The sound quality is superb, at least if you use good quality headphones; I haven't even bothered to try the ear buds that came with the player—because I don't like ear buds. The capacity is terrific; after adding an 8 GB microSDHC card, I was able to load 36 CDs using .flac files. If you use lossy compression, such as .mp3, you'll be able to put much more content on the device if you want to favor quantity over maximum available quality. There is an excellent range of file formats the device can play.

Cons: The interface takes a little getting used to. The player will sometimes freeze, requiring a reset (that sometimes require you also connect it to a computer). Be sure to download copies of the Sansa updater and user manual at the first opportunity. Compared to the Clip+, the body of the player seems a little flimsy but at these prices you can't expect something made out of titanium. I've seen a lot of frustrated comments from people who had their devices lock up or seem to go dead who apparently didn't read the manual. In that regard, don't shut off or restart the computer while the player is connected. This will lock up the device and Windows won't be able to read it and will tell you it's defective. A reset, however, will correct the problem.

Other Thoughts: Despite the lack of mention in the documentation, the Sansa will also play .wav files (which it must, since when it records, it uses .wav files for the recordings). It's cost efficient to buy a micro SDHC card for one of these. I wish I'd spent the paltry few additional dollars to get a 16 GB card instead of 8 (the maximum the player can use is 32 GB). If you don't want to use Windows Media Player (or any similar program) to load the Sansa, you can simply make your files with a program like Exact Audio Copy and drag and drop them into the internal memory and/or your microSDHC card with your computer. By and large, this will give you more control over the setup, but be sure to edit file name, song and album titles, etc., before you transfer them because this can't be done when the files are already on the device. (If you want to change something, you'll have to edit the file while it's on your hard drive and copy it to the player again.)

1 out of 5 eggsDOESN'T WORK & NO REFUND

Pros: The headphones connection does NOT work -- the slightest movement (e.g., walking, running) breaks the sound connection, making the player COMPLETELY useless. Newegg was kind enough to replace the first one, but this one has the SAME problem -- And they will not replace or refund again. If you're thinking of purchasing this player, just flush $40 down the toilet and save yourself the hassle (very frustrating, and don't know what the problem is; I tried different headphones with same result; my OLD sansa mp3 player has always worked fine--it's just OLD and big, but I guess it'll have to last a few more years). I have been happy with Newegg until now. Very unfortunate, and likely lost a good customer for life, unless they change their mind and fix, replace, or refund like they should. There should be "lemon laws" for mp3 players.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat for workout

Pros: Great product for a fraction of the cost. You can shuffle through music easily by viewing album covers. Size makes it easy to clip on sleeve or back of shirt while running. If you are looking for an MP3 player for workouts and not fashion, this is a good choice.

Cons: Very cheap feel. The graphic display is low grade. After 5 months, my screen has the image of one album cover seared into the background.

2 out of 5 eggsDied just after the 30-day return window

Pros: While it was still working, this was a solid budget mp3 player. Small, light, easy to use. Average sound and not a lot of features, but good for the price.

Cons: This device is a good buy, assuming you can get a year or two out of it. It died on me in exactly 52 days, in the middle of use while still half-charged. No amount of button holding, charging, or plugging into other devices has made it anything other than a powerless paperweight. And not even a very useful paperweight at only a few ounces.
