4 out of 5 eggsNifty

Pros: very tough. Handles drops surprisingly well. excellent sound, and the recorder is fun to mess with. Battery lasts fairly long, but I keep it on low settings.

Cons: the battery cover flies off if you look at it sideways. the battery always stays in, though. Demands the use of WMP to sync music, which is annoying. The backlighting is unnecessary and eats power. you can't completely disable it, either, you can only set it to turn off after a period of inactivity, and EVERYTHING is an activity.

Other Thoughts: pretty good overall. Invest in AAA's and possibly some tape for that battery cover.

3 out of 5 eggsOSX Compatible with a Flash

Pros: Awesome sound quality. Easy to use, runs off a AAA battery, so no "recharging" times.

Cons: Only works with XP out of the box. Also requires WMP 10 (which I don't really care for). Since I use OSX as my main operating system, I found out that you can flash the firmware with a "universal" firmware from iRiver to make it show up as a mass storage device. After that it works flawlessly.

2 stars off since I had to use XP to do the flashing.

Other Thoughts: Forcing your customers to use WMP and XP is a great way to kill off your business. iRiver should give you the choice of what program and OS you want without having to use XP to disable their restrictions.

3 out of 5 eggsDecent

Pros: Small, compact, lightweight, decent sound. Lots of doohickies like audio recording, FM, etc. that I don't personally use but others might like. Drag and drop USB drive connectivity makes transfer easy. Decent battery life. Good quality for the price, and good for recertified. Useful for listening to while walking across college campuses.

Cons: Interface is a little tough to fumble with unless you're looking directly at it. Sound quality, i.e. sound driver, could probably be improved upon a little more. AAA battery + music enthusiast = 2 packs of AAAs sitting in my desk drawer.

Other Thoughts: After my 40gig iPod oh-so-conveniently crashed 2 weeks after the warranty expired, I went looking for a cheap, small, but decent-sounding MP3 player that was not manufactured by Satan. I'm extremely picky when it comes to audio fidelity, so I'm probably overly critical when I say I wasn't impressed with the audio quality being driven by this device. Granted, it's running off of a AAA, so I didn't expect much. And for its size, it does a fairly decent job (though I guess there's a reason Apple dominates the market so thoroughly... /cry). The adjustable equalizer does worlds of good, but I find myself spending 3/4 of a song equalizing it, only to have to switch the EQ settings for the next song that plays. Users can use pre-selected EQ settings that are decent for the genres they claim to be for, or you can use 1 user editable one. You can't save your own, unfortunately. I haven't messed with audio recording but once, and it was definitely decent that time around. Not bad really.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat sounding player

Pros: This player is compact, has great sound, plays ogg vorbis encoded files and purchased "recertified" is a super deal

Cons: The original firmware is a drag. Using the firmware update that converts it to a USB Mass Storage Device is the way to go.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfik!

Pros: Easy to understand menus, easy file transfer, easy easy easy. Great sound, lots of options and settings, terrific voice recording.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I got this player for two reasons: after extensive research I learned that iRiver mp3 players supposedly have the best voice recorder of all, and I was looking for a super cheap field recorder. Secondly, I'm going to be stuck on an airplane for ten hours next month, and figured it was time to buy my first mp3 player.
I tested the voice recorder in my apartment, on the highest quality setting. It was great. I'm a musician and I love making music with found sounds, and what better way to find them than a tiny, discreet digital recording device. It picked up ambient sound in the room, and as long as I didn't move my fingers while holding it the recording was crisp and clean.
For the mp3 player, I had no problems with the file transfers (except on a couple of recordings, which wouldn't sync through media player, but I had no trouble dragging and dropping in explorer). The sound quality of playback was great, even in the included headphones. A great product and a fantastic price.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: haven't found any yet

Cons: I tried this with 2 windows XP computers and it will not be seen with the iriver program or as a usb device. It tries to synch with windows media player but gets 5% done with errors. Iriver tech support is not so good through the e-mail. I have a older 799 unit which works wonderfully with the easy to use iriver software but I fear this unit is not so easy to use.Either my unit is defective or they made the T30's too complicated!

Other Thoughts: I bought this because I love my 799 but hopefully I can get this resolved and be able to reccommend iriver again!
