5 out of 5 eggsiRiver P7

Pros: Great video and sound. People who complain about the software want something that does everything for them. Nothing on the software disc is necessary, unless you need to convert movies. Plug the P7 into the USB port of a PC with Win XP and Win XP loads it as a USB Mass Storage Device. Then, you open Windows Explorer and drag the folders containing your MP3s into the "Music" folder on the P7 (P7 opens like any other drive in Windows). It is that easy and this is a high tech item with lots of features. A steal at $100. The touch screen is a great feature and it has a good selection of sound equalizers.

Cons: An arm band with a see thru face would have been a nice touch. The one I found for another brand wasn't large enough. Have to settle for a "total enclosure" one and resort to a play list (could have operated the touch screen thru a clear cover).

5 out of 5 eggsno .MKV support

Pros: Nice design, beautiful 4.3" touch screen, very appealing to the eyes

Superb audio quality. Build in speaker.

Coming from JDX951, P7 has much more processing power since I was able to skip through video playback with no lag at all.

Touch screen to view video in full screen. very important when viewing movie with subtitles since the control bar on the bottom can block the subs.

Cons: for $99.99 there is none.

Other Thoughts: Wish the player can handle .mkv video format because majority of my video files are in .mkv format and the converting software from iRiver can't handle .mkv at all.

Untill iRiver release a firmware update that can support .mkv video formate, I will have to use P7 for Audio only. Suck wast of the big screen.

Iriver should invest in writing a firmware that can play .mkv and .ogg video files because these file format have better quality compare to .avi

I updated my firmware fine using the updater from iRiver driver cd.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat video player

Pros: Received P7 from NewEgg yesterday and used the movie converter to load several HD wmv and avi files to the devide. No issues playing those files! The picture was clear and sound was not off at all. Did not try to upgrade firmware due other warnings on the Net. Price of $99 was a great bargain!

Cons: This is being picky, but:

1. Did not come with cradle like shown in picture.
2. A cover would be nice for keeping the screen from getting scratched.
3. Support website is awful! Slow and hard to look for things. Not too user friendly!

4 out of 5 eggsNot getting it...

Pros: Wonderfully clear screen. Software took instantly on my Windows XP machine though for a firmware upgrade I had to use the Firmware Updater which didn't give me the 1.37 update the Plus3 does (which refused to work). My video converter software worked just fine. My machine saw the device just fine. The battery life is outstanding. The touch screen is responsive to me just fine. My software was just fine. Videos that were converted play and have perfect sync. Solidly built. Thanks Iiriver and Newegg for another excellent product!!

Cons: Don't put it any where near a Sony and listen to the two head to head or you will cry buckets. (I have a 4GB Sony NWZ-A726) The bass gets distorted at levels that my other one could handle just fine. I'll have to play more with the EQ...?? Maybe Sony and Iriver should combine! :) I had to reset mine a couple of times but it's been great otherwise. FM recording worked wonderfully like the one reviewer said but have not tested Voice.

Other Thoughts: to Iriver: get your software on track and stop cost-cutting and we'll gladly pay the extra coin for the better audio processing (sorry the Rockchip just not settling really well vs. my Sony but I have a passion for iriver [I had the H320 but it disappeared]) Overall though was a STEAL for the storage capacity and the screen size and video quality! Thanks!

1 out of 5 eggsGreat device, terrible support and software.

Pros: Real solid video for the price - purchased for 100USD.
The record from FM feature works flawlessly.
Battery life is solid - around 21 hours last time.
Sound quality is good and has a very functional equalizer and sound enhancement selection built into the player.

Last but not least, it looks sleek. If i get it working, i'll be setting it up as the house music player, where it can get noticed.

Cons: 1. NO DRAG AND DROP FUNCTIONALITY. which wouldn't be that terrible, really, if it wasn't for the fact that...
3. and neither does the firmware, which bricks the thing when you upgrade.
4. Proprietary USB connector.
5. MicroSD only accepts up to 8 gig cards.
6. Pic viewing is particularly awkward and unresponsive.
As of my 4th day owning and trying to work with it, i've attempted on three PCs and an old mac laptop, and iRiver's own software will not recognize the device. Windows Media Player will, but only transfers music and about 1 out of 5 pictures, seemingly at random, leaving the nice video/ebook quality i snagged it for completely moot.

Other Thoughts: Pains me to give this thing 2 out of 5 simply because of bad software, but it's truly -that bad-. I've had to download another movie converter, windows media player 11, and the latest version of the iRiver software, and i'm still not able to reliably get files onto the thing.

Final opinion: if they do not overhaul the software for it, or someone doesn't find a way to add drag and drop functionality, do not purchase one. Waste of money and time.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent Product

Pros: *-- Product has an excellent desgin. Keeping simplicity within means of Modern.

The framework of this model has a very smooth aluminum design with some plastic buttons. The top has volume buttons (+/-), menu and power button.

5 Points:

1. Display- Very bright display, low resolution. When angled, you will not be able to see the picture.

2. Weight/Size- Slightly bigger than a iPhone and a wee-bit thicker also. Very light and portable nonetheless.

3. Sound- Use headphones. (Trust me)

4. Functionality- Has many formats that it can read, firmware needs to be updated since it doesn't accept video files at certain resolutions. And even though the converter converted the files for the P7, the P7 is sometimes 'picky' on what it wants to play for you.

5. Overall- Just buy the product. $115.00 total with shipping and CA state sales tax. Has 16GB of memory with an expansion of 8GB ($15.00 SDHC chip at the Bay). Battery life you can't beat, rarely ever needs to be recharged.

Cons: Speakers- Go get your cell phone, turn it to lowest volume, then play some music.

Resolution- Could be higher, but the price could be also.

Scrolling- Kind of a bugger, if you have gigantic gorilla fingers.

Response- Don't compare iPhone touch screen to this, it's like comparing being hit with a Smart Car vs Being hit with a Tank. Its bearable.

Accessories- Not much out there.

Other Thoughts: You don't need Wifi or 3G network cards, it plays music and watches video with a 4.3'' screen. If you're an enthusiast that complains about the other things, go and buy a iPhone or iTouch, but this is just for the average user that doesn't need those "extra" features.

2 out of 5 eggsAesthetic is high, but lacks utility

Pros: Despite cnet and other reviews, I think it looks pretty cool. Magazine layout is nice if you're going to be using all the features like text and radio. Capacity is potentially 24 GB with 8 GB SD expansion card. PRICE. Was $119 when I bought it.

Cons: I really just needed an mp3 player, so all the added functionality and features are lost on me. Touch screen is incredibly unresponsive. System lags and takes forever to boot up. Nowhere to store the stylus means you end up using your finger and getting it covered in prints. Proprietary USB connector. Included software was corrupt. Had to search like crazy to find it off iRiver's website. Didn't work when synced to winamp. I could go on, but I wouldn't read a review this long myself.

Other Thoughts: Overall I guess it's worth the price, if you're looking for a multi-functional portable device. If you're just trying to find an mp3 player that's easy to use, pay more...
