Great for movies, music - not much else
- Pros: Plays .avi movies and mp3 music very well - out of the box. The screen is very decent for this application. Battery life has been good for me, I can get in about 2 movies on one charge. Touch screen controls work well. Solid, quality construction. The included earphones work good enough.
- Cons: Archos has chosen to disable several functions on their units in order to generate additional $$$. All of this should be apparent to those that read item descriptions, specs and reviews. MAKE SURE BEFORE YOU BUY - add the price of all the so called "plug-ins" and then decide if you still want the unit. Archos does not sell "plug-in software" they sell an "unlock" code to unlock capabilities already on your unit.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR $$ on the web browser code. Web browsing is VERY slow. I used it on my home wifi and another local hot spot, VERY SLOW. I won't be buying any of the other so called "plug-in" as the web browser was a complete waste of money.
The somewhat awkward proprietary usb cable and lack of sd card slot.
- Other Thoughts: I bought the 605 elsewhere, Neweggs price on this model is currently a better deal. (NEWEGG is the best).
I like this unit for movie watching and music. When I bought this I had hoped to be able to check the weather/news when I was at starbucks, etc - that a big no go!
Archos business model of soaking you for unlock codes is a shame as the units they sell are quality made. But as I read some where else, you would probably be better off buying a netbook for the money.
I have been using a trail version (21 days) of anydvd and clonedvd mobile to rip some of my dvds to .avi, which works about 75% of the time, 1 hour plus to convert per movie. I plan on buying this software if I can't find better. Some of the dvds that didn't rip (error-ed out) I used the FREE iriverter software others have mentioned, it rip most of them, albeit at some what lower quality and took about twice as long. My movies have been ending up about 2gb, so factor that into your disk size.

Good, but slow
- Pros: Can do so much more then you first realize. You can set up a media server on your computer, then wifi into the network and access so much more content that way. Comes with a case.
7" Screen!
- Cons: You have to pay for the browser, MPEG-4 video capability, DVR capability (plus you have to buy the stand for it), and a few other things. It runs fairly slow, if I were to do it again I would just pay the extra bucks and get the Archos 7. Webpages take forever to load, especially sites like YouTube.
- Other Thoughts: Very cool device, I recommend Archos devices to any level of technology users (Novice to Expert), but you will get so much more out of this device if you really know what you're doing.
