3 out of 5 eggsGood

Pros: Decent Gps at the time.

Cons: Kind of left in the dust by archos. no new updates, fixes take long to get out.

Other Thoughts: Newegg was great on the selling and shipping.

1 out of 5 eggsJunk

Pros: I gave this 1 star because I couldn't give it a zero

Cons: Made with components that go bad in a year so. Terrible Support!

Other Thoughts: You get what you pay for.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing Little Device

Pros: This device (and I only own the 8GB model) does it all. I surf the web (sans Flash),
navigate on foot (Backcountry Navigator)
navigate in my car (nDrive),
Read e-books and PDF/MS Office (ThinkFree Office)
IM (Google Voice)
3D Games,
and did everybody mention that the media player blows anything from Apple or Microsoft away?

Oh, and the Apps aren't all $4.99, most, Free!

This device will pretty much read any audio or video format and play it. There is a codec you have to purchase (why?) for MPEG2, but savvy users use MP4 or something else for video.

WIFI, Bluetooth, Android (1.6 and stuck there), MicroSD slot, AV In/Out with available docks, FM Transmitter, BT/USB tether to 3G/CDMA/GSM.... What doesn't this thing do?

To put it into perspective, I'm a frequent business traveler. I also own an iTouch 3G 32GB. Guess which one accompanies me on my trips... the Archos. Sorry AAPL......

Anyway there are caveats to all this fun. R

Cons: OK, it does everything, but not everything well.

*GPS reception is hit-or-miss depending on the user (I am loving my GPS)
*GPS software is not included. For $30US you can get nDrive9 which is outdated. nDrive10 and Copilot8 are newer.
*Android 1.6 and hope you like that... No planned ups to 2.x
* You need to manage apps running, it only has about 110MB useable RAM after boot up so it would be crash-prone unless you take preemptive action.
* It's not cell-based. If you can afford the expensive phone and data plan, this may not be for you. If you have a company cell only, this is a great travel buddy!
* Separate 2D and 3D firmwares, your mileage will vary with certain apps depending on OpenGL
* Album art and media player are not polished looking like iPod

Other Thoughts: Google Market 'hack' is so darn easy, my 7-year old could do it. It allows purchase-able apps that way.

Some People 'root' the device to gain other functionality, like loading Angstrom Linux.

Just buy this instead of the new Archos "Gen8". Send Archos a message that we all like full-featured devices! They removed the GPS and screen size in the newer models, pfft. I use this as my car nav system, so Gen8 is out for me.

5 out of 5 eggsnothing's perfect

Pros: Works about as 100% as one could expect. Wifi, 32gig storage, download from the web,tons of apps as if you're really going to use it for anything other than a toy anyway when not at home. Excellent resolution for it's size, drug an unconverted avi to it(also a few converted) and it's played all my movies, converting them on it's own. Look at it for what it is, an ultra portable media and internet access device. Built solidly, have goosed my car a couple times and it slid off the dash pulling the cassette adapter cable(generic bought separately) out banging around and still works 100%. I downloaded realvnc pro trial(i have win7 core i7 on my desktop) and D/Led one of the vnc viewers and remotely controlled my desktop a lttile from downstairs lol(not recommended, it is what it is). Girl I spoke to on the phone said this would support flash in browser in a future update. Recognized my class 6 micro SDHC and copied 1gig from it in about a minute.

Cons: It's $40 dollars less now than when I bought it a few months ago. Won't charge properly if it's turned off while plugged in. I just turn it off, plug it in, it autoboots and asks if "charge only" press it, set it down, few hours later it's geen light will be flashing full charge. No generic hp laserjet4 printer driver or anything like that available. Touch screen does not support multitouch, like 2 locations pressed simultaneously, so no hardcore gaming lol. The "home" should be selectable to remove app from memory and return to home screen. Does not transform into a sizzler. No host usb adapter built in so if you want to kook up a mini keyboard/mouse you need to buy the extra battery pack or TV adapter(i didn't so don't know if a given keyboard or mouse would work)

Other Thoughts: Only maybe 3 out of the 30 or so apps i've D/Led from applib(there are 100's free) actually have an "exit". Use system monitor(built in) and close junk that keeps running in the background. I'm surprised skype isn't marketed widely for this because it would be ideal, also an infrared xmitter would go a long way to make it a sweet universal remote, but it's design is similar to a cell phone and left in the "ready" would require it to be charged at least every few days. Powering it off when not in use lets it run without needing a charge for a couple weeks or longer with light use.

5 out of 5 eggsIt only does... Everything!

Pros: Large extremely high quality display, sufficient storage for most users and expandable via MicroSD for the rest of us, very responsive touch screen, plenty of processing power and RAM for any normal Android usage, amazing Wireless capabilities, fantastic sound quality. Does everything you expect from a small computer, personal media player, and a high end Garmin all in one! it only does EVERYTHING!

Cons: Only Android 1.6 (Donut), requires some hacking to get Android Market the included AppLib market is very limited. Included GPS software is expensive but if you get Android Market working i highly recommend a cheaper app. Mine shipped with a single dead pixel but of course Newegg RMA was swift and the replacement is perfect.

Other Thoughts: I recommend this to anyone technically savvy wanting an Android Tablet but not wanting to buck up the extra $30/mo data plan for a Smartphone. After you get the Android Market installed its an extremely solid and useful device.

An added bonus feature, in the event it crashes for any reason (I was responsible due to tinkering, device hasn't crashed on its own yet) it has a ROM chip with a fantastic recovery console capable of anything from a simple file system check/repair to a full reformat and reload of the firmware via USB to a working computer.

1 out of 5 eggsThink Carefully!

Pros: NONE Known

Cons: Arrived 8/6/10, DOA.
Unit indicates charging (light IS lit up), For 38 continuous hours! Never indicated to be charged (by blinking the charge indicator light).

The Archos 5 internet Tablet STILL won't power up, SO I can't obtain products "KEY Number", so NO support from manufacturer.

After much research, this seems to be a common issue with the Archos units.

Newegg charged me $9.03 for the UPS label, JUST TO RETURN a DOA item!!!!!

Other Thoughts: I have never had to pay the return shipping for a defective product when returned within 48 hours of delivery!!! CRAZY

IF you sill choose to purchase one, Re-consider WHERE you purchase this item.

3 out of 5 eggsNot the best..but overall pretty good

Pros: Good video quality
Good Audio Quality
Effective Wi-Fi
GPS Support (Works with Google Maps App)

Cons: Short Battery Life
Buggy version of Android
No Android 2.0+ Support
No Android Market
Bad YouTube Support

Other Thoughts: All-in-all it's a fair mp3/video player that can browse the Internet. It needs a LOT of work to really be considered a proper Android internet tablet but I have to admit that at least they are going in the right direction.

1 out of 5 eggsIf I had it to do over...

Pros: Sounds cool by the advertisement.

Cons: Too many to list but here are some.
- Expensive apps. (worthless after unit goes bad)
- They advertise accessories that never quite pan out.
- Cheap build compared to other devices and doesn't hold up.
- One of the worst product support companies I have ever dealt with.
- If/When it goes bad in 13 months, they will not stand behind the product and fix it. Instead, they will expect you to pay almost what you buy it for to fix it.

Other Thoughts: Most companies would want to fix their defective products in the attempts to keep customers. Not Archos.

2 out of 5 eggsWorks Well On Paper...

Pros: Big, Bright Screen;
Great Video Playback;
Great Use of Android Operating System;
Awesome Look and Feel;
Not Too Big, Not Too Small;
Decent Battery Life;

Cons: Where do I start? I bought this product because of the screen size, Android, and the ability to play pretty much any music file I threw at it. Well..Turns out it's a pile of rubbish! The thing froze up every 5 minutes (Couldn't even play more than 2 songs in a row)! It's Archos's Media Management on the device that really made me return the device...The Android experience was great, but everytime I tried to watch movies, listen to music, use the radio (Which turned out to be useless anyway), or something else, It would freeze and restart EVERY TIME! The only good thing the device was for was surfing the web, but you're stuck using WiFi anyway...The device ended up being redundant and a waste of money because I basically have a computer to do everything that the Archos can do...Don't be decieved by this product! I'm usually the one where I go "oh..Everybody else had a problem with this device, but it won't happen to me.." WRONG!

Other Thoughts: I'm just glad I bought it at Best Buy where I could get a full refund of the product (For some reason the device wasn't listed in the restocking fee list, so I got literally every penny back..) Just please don't waste you're money on this device. I know it looks awesome, GPS, Music, 1080P Movies, Huge Screen, Android; But the device hasn't been perfected and never will be...They do put updates out like once a week, but it really doesn't do anything. When I bought it, I paid 369.99 for it, so the fact that they lowered it 100 now leads me to believe that a new product is probably on its way (could be wrong though)...All in all, just stay away, get an IPOD Touch or Zune HD...

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Large screen with good colors that still fits in a pocket.

Wifi, Bluetooth and GPS

Great CODEC Support

Archos has a developer that frequents and responds to questions and bug reports (gets them fixed fast).

Archos released a SDE for those who want to install their own home brew OS - This may not be for everyone but is two steps above the competition!

Bluetooth interface allows you to use keyboard/mouse for control in addition to wireless headsets. You can even connect to a Wii remote!!

I use mine (16G version) daily for email, music, facebook, craigslist, etc... traveling often it is a great companion as I can carry one unit that gives me email entertainment and GPS in my pocket.

Placement of the built in speaker and microphone allow the unit to be used for VOIP calling - You must turn down the speaker volume or use a headset when doing this to avoid an echo. Call quality using Google voice and SipDroid is very good but does have a small delay

Cons: Battery Life: I use a Motorola bluetooth head set for music and get less than eight hours of play on a charge. The headset only lasts six so its not a large problem.

GPS: Can take a few (5-7) minutes to lock at times and the NDrive demo is useless if you are running not running a 32 bit Windows version (to install the demo).

Touch Screen: The touch screen is resistive so no multitouch. The other side to this is that you can use a stylus with it, unlike a capacitive multitouch unit.

Other Thoughts: Google Marketplace can be installed by simply downloading an installation file from With access to the Marketplace, thousands of free and paid Apps are available.

For a GPS solution, I recommend CoPilot Live from the Marketplace ($30 US). As of firmware 2.0.21, it works great even though ALK does not have it on the compatible list. For $300 total, you can have a large screen GPS with text to speech, music, video and internet
