If you need more than a basic PC for work or play, but you don't need all the extra bells and whistles, consider Shuttle's SN68G2. Part of their compact, affordable Glamor Series, it is designed to support the latest AM2 multi-core processors including AMD Athlon 64 and Athlon 64 x2 CPUs as well as AMD Sempron chipsets. Communication between the CPU and other components is accelerated with 1Ghz HyperTransport technology. Options within the BIOS enable excellent control over CPU frequency and voltage settings with a user-friendly menu. Up to 4GB of DDR2 SDRAM memory can be installed with up to 1 Ghz supported in overclocking mode.
The integrated nVIDIA GeForce 7025 graphics engine supports DirectX 9, and CineFX 3.0 architecture to deliver the full 3D effects of Windows Vista's Aero 3D interface. Get high quality surround sound with 7.1 channels of high definition audio. A 250 Watt mini power supply powers the system and it features Active Power Factor Correction for efficient operation and energy savings. Active Airflow design and Silent X cooling and noise reduction technology combine with the Shuttle Integrated Cooling Engine and its heatpipes to keep the system operating efficiently at low noise and temperature levels.

Memory Concerns
- Pros: Form factor - small, quiet, lots of ports and easy to move if you have to; almost disappears on the desk.
For those who want a cool 'n quiet pc I suggest an AMD 45w cpu and a new green power WD hard drive.
- Cons: Not an extreme gaming machine (duh!) but handles itself well at above average settings. Also its picky about DDR2 voltage settings. BIOS sets to 1.8v default which for some RAM is perfect for 667mhz with dual channel. To get to 800 you have to set voltage in BIOS and force to DDR2-800. Also if you can't get it to start (no display) with dual channel, try installing with one stick and upgrade to the new April 2008 BIOS and set all the settings for timings and voltage then reinstall 2 sticks. After that, dual channel worked for me. I've experimented with Corsair, Wintec and Kingston memory and I prefer Corsair at 1.9v or Kingston at 1.95 or 2.0v. Avoid using 2.1+ volt memory with this rig as I think its unstable
- Other Thoughts: The links for shuttle BIOS are here:
http://global.shuttle.com/download03.jsp?PCI=19&PI=647
Also you'll need the AWDflash utility here: http://global.shuttle.com/download03.jsp?PCI=19&PI=647
I used a usb floppy and a DOS boot disk to flash. Good luck, these things are awesome! I'm building another one this memorial weekend, my eleventh, now that I have the spec dialed in. Newegg rocks and Go Lakers!
Solid Buy
- Pros: For someone looking for a solid, good performing and well made unit you can hardly go wrong with this little guy.
The case has an excellent fit and finish to it and looks great - not too flashy but definitely not boring. Shuttle has a well deserved rep for well thought out products and this one is no exception. In a case this small there are a million ways to make a poor, frustrating, hard to reach design but Shuttle avoided them all. All cabling is pre routed to exactly where they are needed, the memory slots are easy to access and the expansion slots are right at the edge of the case making it a snap to install your cards.
This little guy also performs well. I downloaded the most recent chipset, LAN, audio and video drivers from Shuttle's easy to use website and had zero problems getting them installed and running flawlessly.
- Cons: Nothing major. It has the typically weak onboard graphics that siphon system memory but an inexpensive video card takes care of all that.
The only (minor) gripe I have with this unit is the rather paltry power supply rating. In my opinion 250W is on the low side especially when you consider that even the dinky GeForce 8400GS I installed is rated for a minimum 350W power supply. I know this unit isn't meant for gaming and the breaker-tripping video cards needed for it and I know there's not a lot of space to play with but I'd sure feel more comfortable with at least a 300W power supply. That being said the components I chose (see below) run perfectly fine.
- Other Thoughts: All in all I could hardly be happier with this unit. I added an AthlonX2 6000+, 2GB Winfast DDR2-800 and an MSI GeForce 8400GS. Everything runs like a dream.
One thing to be aware of (something I totally I missed) is that this unit does not have PS2 ports for mouse and keyboard. I tried a PS2 to USB adapter but even with that the Windows installer didn't want to pick up my keyboard so I had to run out an pick up a USB keyboard to get Windows installed. It was no biggie to me but something for a potential buyer to be aware of. All in all this Shuttle is a winner!

great low cost, small computer
- Pros: I needed something at home as a server to facilitate up to 5 people to centrally log on and use apps that run on server 2008.
I bought a shuttle with an Athlon 64 x2 the 5900 version which is a 65W processor and it works great. It is quiet, it is effective, very cost effective and handles all 5 users at once very well. It is not used for gaming or high end graphics, but for office, quickbooks and some other work type apps. I stuck in a 1TB Western Digital green disk.
- Cons: no RAID, no multiple disks that the power supply can handle, but with a USB drive a backup is easy.
- Other Thoughts: great, low cost PC, small in size, power consumption is a breeze compared to my 1000 watt gaming PC. it emits almost no heat and has been on for over a week now without any issues. It is not a unit for non-it users that have not previously built custom PC's.
Second one and lovin' it
- Pros: Joy to work with. Cables, heat sync, heat sync compound, well thought out design. Shuttle has become my best friend. Love the front ports and the overall design.
- Cons: PCIx and PCI slots could be swapped to allow for a double slot video card. Any high end video card is TIGHT. Maybe sell with the more powerful power supply?
- Other Thoughts: I have read some of the lower reviews where they talk about the quality or heat and quite frankly they must be doing something wrong. This machine never runs warm and only when I am really taxing the box does the ICE fan even begin to rev.
My first one is my personal workstation with a 5600+, 4gb ram, ATI 3870 HD, WD Scorpio Black 160 (yes, laptop HD) and a LiteOn DVDRW. This last one became a Windows Home Server with 3 HDD and a Sempron LE1250. Thing runs quiet and bullet proof.
Very Pleased
- Pros: Small, quiet, low power consumption
- Cons: Limited expandability
- Other Thoughts: I'm not a gamer or overclocker, I'm a software developer who's more interested in GUI performance than gaming graphics. With one of the 45w CPUs (the 5050e), 4G of G.SKILL memory, and the 1TB Western Digital "green" drive, this unit is cool, quiet, and performs beautifully for my needs. I run Ubuntu 9.04 with the usual assortment of GUI hogs - firefox, thunderbird - and Java development tools. Assembly was not bad - quarters are tight, but Shuttle makes well-designed and efficient use of the minimal space. Overall, a lot of computer for a very reasonable cost.
