1 out of 5 eggs"The Sound"

Pros: *A bare bones system that potentially can work with your parts

Cons: *A bare bones system that will become your fault even if it's their fault.

Other Thoughts: So, I get this shiny little sucker in the mail and proceed to carefully insert my components to it. First boot up, seems to work fine.. I'm watching the mother board and seeing it come to life for the first time. I begin hearing this high pitched sound. I figure it out and it's their cpu fan. No problem, let's give them a call and we can clear this up. NewEgg doesn't cover it, have to go through Shuttle, this was pretty easy to find. Shuttle took FOREVER to finally get a RMA number as I try to explain how unacceptable the sound is to a person who barely understands english, finishing with a warning "if we can't find the problem we bill you for the problem". Listening to the fan, I knew there's no way they'd miss it. I ship it off, it comes back with me being billed and stating no problem found. The joys of "we didn't do it" responses.

5 out of 5 eggsLove it

Pros: - Wireless internet [Realtek] allows me to shove the PC in a closet.

- This thing is smaller than I thought! I fit the PC in a suitcase to game at my friends' house.

- Prettyful!

Cons: - Fingerprint Reader software unsupported on my OS. I dont blame Shuttle though. MS is making so many OSes, its hard to keep up.

- Included Bluetooth adapter doesnt support a few of my devices. Again, it might be the driver not compatible with the OS.

Other Thoughts: I normally run 2 VMs in VMware on boot, & this has been running them well. The only problem is my HDD. Its a bit slow for Win7 & VMs.

1 out of 5 eggsWent POOF fairly quickly

Pros: Quiet running, easy to put together, well thought out internal design (except as noted below.) Nice looking.

Cons: Not much space around the inner-most PCI-e card area. I was worried that the cards would short circuit against the bare metal nearby.
After about two weeks running without problems, it died suddenly. No video, no POST. The drives power up, but then it sits there dead as a brick. This is the second shuttle box I've had that went this way - just not as quickly. No unusual activity or abnormal conditions - it just stopped in the middle of a mouse movement and never came back.

Other Thoughts: Moving to a mid-tower system with a more standard motherboard. The shuttle form factor is very attractive for what I wanted (HTPC), but I can't swap out pieces when they die. I don't think I'll be buying another shuttle box soon either - the sudden death rate (2 for 2 for me) isn't worth it.

2 out of 5 eggsDo not buy this product

Pros: 1. guess the size is very nice and the amount of usb slots.

Cons: 1. i have had to rma this motherboard twice after the board would not carry power to the video card.
2. only has a 450w power supply (no upgrade option yet)
3. the fans are very noisy
4. shuttle support was not very helpful. they just asked me to send the entire machine in. (at my cost)

Other Thoughts: for me this barebone system was a complete let down. when it is up and running it is a pretty sweet machine, but dealing with Shuttle has been a hassle. Overall I regret this purchase and would not recommend it to anyone.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Compact Box

Pros: Works great and it takes up no space at all. Put 4 gigs of DDR3 and a Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield in it. I installed XP, Ubuntu, and OS X and this thing screams. Great machine, and great value.

Cons: Obviously if you are looking for a gaming rig to throw your monster graphics card in this probably isn't your box. Other than that none really.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: SFF, obviously. DDR3 support. 2 x eSATA. Low noise heat pipe CPU cooler. Stealth drive lever to operate your optical disc open/close button works much better than my older Shuttle. It never could really work with my drive so I always used software eject to get the tray open. The SX48P2 works flawlessly with my new BR drive.

Cons: No onboard video or Firewire. Fan slightly louder at idle than the older Shuttle that this SX48P2 Deluxe is replacing.

Other Thoughts: If you plan to use this Corsair XMS3 like I did (I got 8GB, it's on Shuttle's compatibility list) save yourself a week of random BSOD's and set the voltage to 1.8V in your BIOS.

See Corsiar's page which is for the SX48P2 (they don't have the Deluxe listed, but the 1.8V here supports what I found through trial and error:

5 out of 5 eggsPowerhouse Shuttle

Pros: The SX48P2 Deluxe comes with all the bells and whistles:
1. ddr3 support
2. HD Audio
3. Bluetooth
4. Fingerprint Reader (for password challenged folks....like everyone's parents.....haha)
5. Dual Nics (that can be teamed)
6. Wireless Nic
7. 3 hdd bays
System was up and running in no time , attached my e8600, 4 gigs of gskill 1600 (f3-12800-cl7-4gbhz), and (temporary) nvidia 7300 (the gtx280 will come into play next paycheck).

The fans do have the ability to sound like a jet engine, but default settings have them almost inaudible. (I'm sure that will change when I put in the gtx280).

Cons: Am having some trouble getting the ram working at 1600. I was able to set the 7-7-7-18 settings, but can't get the cpu/dram ratio set properly to get it up to 1600Mhz. but 1333 will be fine for now, and if I can't get it up to 1600, I'm not going to complain much. I'm sure a call into shuttle support will give some insight.

Other Thoughts: I haven't built a new rig for personal use/gaming since the sn85g4 (I know!!!!!). So its no suprise that the e8600 ran circles around my old amd64 3700+ 754pin.

Also: For users scared of having to chop up a 4pin atx connector to get a gtx280 to fit in this case:

Revision 2.0 of this board has a sideways facing 4pin connector so a gtx280 will fit without modding! (HORRAY!)
I'll post again with how things work with gtx280 and any results on getting ram to run at 1600.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: The order / shipping process was great. The everything arrived safe and sound, exactly when it was supposed to.

Having built my share of tower computers, the Shuttle is a refreshing masterpiece of engineering. Everything fit perfectly, and the directions were so simple anyone could follow them.

I did run into a small problem initially, but after contacting Shuttle's tech support by email I was able to quickly resolve the problem.

All-in-all, I am extremely pleased!

Cons: It would have been nice if they could have fit one PCI slot in there, and as has been mentioned in other reviews, the power is marginal for two high-end video cards.

Also, as I am going to use this as a media server, I was a bit disappointed that it didn't support wireless-N, but perhaps I can find a card for the PCIe slot at a later date.

Other Thoughts: One annoying discovery was that the utilities for the the finger-print reader don't support 64 bit! I'm still trying to figure out how to get around this.

3 out of 5 eggsSpecifications are wrong, There are no IEEE1394 ports

Pros: Very nice design, lots of pwoer in such a small form factor. Newegg handled the RMA in a professional and timely manner.

Cons: Has everything, even a finger print reader, but no 1394 ports. Having 1394 would have earned another egg. All on board USB headers are occupied by other internal peripherals, so don't expect to use a 3.5" media card reader without disabling something.

Other Thoughts: The SX-48P2-E model has the firewire sans the fingerprint reader, the only major difference. Shuttle customer service was responsive and confirmed the specifications on Newegg's site are not accurate.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Everything is packed in very nicely. Fun little project!

Cons: E-SATA ports need a beta BIOS to work - hooked my CD/DVD ROM to an external USB enclosure to install OS and drivers!
Two PCI-E 2.0 ports with only enough room to run 1 dual-slot [fast] card or two single-slot [mediocre] cards.
Not quite enough power for more powerful videocard solutions.
Some fragile pieces - one of the tabs easily snapped from where the front panel secures to the inside of the chassis.

Other Thoughts: Despite the cons, this little case has a very nice layout.
I am using a Thermaltake W0157RU [450W] auxiliary PSU in my one 5 1/4" drive bay inside this case. Its lone job is to power my 4870x2 [which takes up both slots on the rear of the case, and took some coercion to get into place].
Q9550
8GB GSkill DDR-3 [10660]
2x32GB OCZ Core SSDs in RAID-0 make this fun!
1TB Seagate for storage

I won't need to turn the heater up this winter.
