Not perfect, but not trash either.
- Pros: The board is faster than I had expected. I bought this barebone system to strip it for a custom PC built in an old NES case.
The BIOS has a fan speed option which did not seem to make any difference in the temperature or fan speeds. Because of the air flow restrictions in the NES case, it's a miracle that it doesn't heat up any quicker. It also has a fan on the Northbridge chipset, and allows for two more fans to be installed. The system uses very little power, enough so that I don't even notice on the electrical bill. Since this is a Dual-Core Atom, it has hyper-threading, making it act like a cheap man's Quad. Makes a good difference. This system handles the HTPC tasks I threw at it, including DVD's, High Def video files with common compression, and streaming via Netflix, Hulu and the like. Though Hulu gave me problems using Hi-Def at full screen, some desktops have that issue too.
- Cons: The case, and MB have no reset feature that I could find, and I've looked. While it's not an issue for most, just wish it did. I'm unsure if the reset is not common for ITX boards though.
This board only has one RAM slot, which may not do much to annoy most, it can be a bother if you do anything that needs more RAM. Also wished there had been a HDMI slot, though it's not an issue for me, I had ordered a HDMI-DVI cord.
- Other Thoughts: I can't comment on the structural weakness of the case, though the doors seems stable enough, as does the case.
The OS I've used for this build is a Windows XP Pro from a scrapped computer, using the latest updates. I have also updated the firmware from the Shuttle website. As always, NewEgg.com delivered fast, with no damage, though I guess the delivery company helped with that.
Was great then boom
- Pros: Was running great, small, low power
- Cons: Fan stinks, can't hold larger drives
- Other Thoughts: Had this unit for about 7 months now, everything was going well until this eve, when I noticed my WHS clients could not see the server (it is running WHS). Since it is tucked away and it was not on the network for whatever reaosn I had to lug a monitor there in hopes of seeing something, nadda. Changed out the ethernet cord, nothing. Did a hard boot, nothing and now the front panel LED's are no longer being lit. Power is being consumed, drive is spinning, fan is turning, etc...but nothing out of the video on DVI or VGA and nadda from the front LED's. This is very frustrating and to top it off a 30 day manufacturers warranty...30 days! Crazyness.
perfect ubuntu box
- Pros: awesome platform to run ubuntu - i have it running ubuntu 9.04 with 2G, a 32GB ssd drive, and a dvr-r; and could not be happier. originally i got this as a server for music (squeezeboxserver), but the best thing about this i can say is that it has utterly replaced my high powered desktop for day to day duty - why turn on the powerhig if this does 99% of the stuff i need to do so well?
- Cons: i would just say that the fan needs replacing. that is all - i endorse the scythe 40x20 fan, that really turns this into a totally quiet machine. put an ssd in there and this thing will be silent even in a very quiet home office (like mine). now my supposedly silent power PC sounds like a lawnmower whenever i need to turn it on, despite the utter care i used to silent parts on it - it does not compare to the X27D with the scythe fan.
- Other Thoughts: you need to know what youq are getting and what you use this for - it is NOT a high powered video egngine, the 945 chipset does not have the horsepower for that. i do drive a 1600x1200 monitor and extra visual effects under ubuntu no problem, but HD is another matter and i do not try that. average internet video of course runs well, you can throw youtube and better internet quality at it all day. CPU utilization does not go beyond 30% with regular good quality internet video. i think it could do HD in native open format, but i have not yet tried it.
