4 out of 5 eggsWorks Great as a lightweight Linux server

Pros: I bought this unit to install as a Linux server. It has functioned flawlessly for about a year now, running nightly backups of the local network and syncing that data to a remote server. The quite design makes it nice for a home office environment.

Cons: The network card does not play nice out of the box when installing Ubuntu. I would guess this is the case with other Linux distros as well. I used a USB network adapter for the first install so that I could add the appropriate software for the network card to function.

Other Thoughts: I am thinking about using another of these boxes to run as a MythTV frontend. Just haven't pulled the trigger yet.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little system

Pros: Low cost and reasonable price

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I read a couple reviews here and seems that others are having issue with the wifi. Easy setup and the bios is very generic. Wifi can be enable or disable in bios and works very well. Haven't seen any issue yet. Running the box for a magic jack voip phone and it performs way over of what I expected.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat home server

Pros: Complete, fan-less, dual-core, gigabit system in a really small form factor. I'm using it as a home linux server and it is just perfect.

Cons: It looks like pretty difficult to get WiFi working, but I use wired connection only so it did not matter to me. HD video playback can be an issue but i'm using it without monitor.

Other Thoughts: Too bad you might have missed the sale price of $159.99

4 out of 5 eggsthis thing is great

Pros: It's small, it's quite and if you are just going to use it for basic purposes, it's fast and easy. I got this for a friend of mine who had a windows 98 computer so you can image the upgrade she got. She doesn need anything powerfull, she does basic email, facebook, websurf, stuff like that. Adding ram and dvd burner is easy for since it didnt come with one. it made the price cheaper too.

Cons: NA

Other Thoughts: This is my first atom computer i've bought and i was pleased with it performance. The fanless system made my desktop tower sound loud, lol. I would recommand this for anybody who needs a basic computer usage and great money saver too. I was planning on building a midtower dual core system for about 300 but this one saved my the trouble and the money. so for the 300 i put a side, i got a new monitor and a keyboard with this computer for 300. :)

5 out of 5 eggsGreat work computer, bad for video

Pros: Small, and quite. The only noise coming from the unit is from the hard drive. Swapped out the ram with a 2 gig chip I had laying around, but ran it on 1 gig for a little while and it seemed to do alright. Running Windows 7, Great for MS Office and general web surfing.

Cons: Ok, so it took a long while to get the Wifi card to be recognized by Windows. Don't know what finally did it, but I did set the controller to "AHCI" as recommended earlier. You are going to want to set that before you install Windows, once install, pop the disc in, or in my case, copy to usb key, and let the automated driver installer go to town, takes about 20 min and doesn't really have a status bar. But was able to get Wifi running on the original BIOS. Don't know what changing "AHCI" really does, as Windows was able to find the stock IDE drive. As always, your results may very. There is a BIOS upgrade floating around, but at the time I wrote this, it was pulled from the site, and I'm a bit hesitant to upgrade my BIOS from a file found on another site.

Other Thoughts: Great work horse computer, but not for heavy flash or HD video. If you are a home user looking for that, keep searching, the Ion version of this should work wonders. Dual core with hyper-threading handles day to day task like a champ. Would recommend the upgrade to 2 gigs, and remember, you need a usb keyboard and mouse.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome for the price!!!!!

Pros: Cant be beat for the price, i took out the 1gb stick and put in a 2gb then installed windows 7 ultimate runs just fine for normal use of course its no gaming machine but what is at this price. I had no problems with the wireless ie i didnt have to install bios 109

Cons: Ac adapter gets hot im guessing this is normal since its basically a laptop power supply . long as it holds up im 100% happy

5 out of 5 eggsMinimilist PC

Pros: Compact, low power draw, very quiet, really good build quality as expected from Shuttle. Very adequate as a small biz client where the ability to play videos is not a priority. It does exactly what it's made for and you'd be silly to try and play games on it. Not made for that. Have it running Win7 Home 32bit flawlessly on an extra SSD I had and will use the included 160GB HDD for a USB backup drive. About the WLAN problem, see notes below.

Cons: None that I can think of as long as you use it properly.

Other Thoughts: Had the same issue as everyone else upon first install of Win7, could not get the WLAN to recognize or work. After swapping out the drive with an SSD I usually go into the bios and set the SATA controller to "AHCI" mode rather than the default "IDE" mode. Installed Win7 again and after that everything works, including the WLAN. Don't even need the utility to turn the adapter on. Worked for me, maybe will fix your problem too.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Ubuntu desktop

Pros: Ubuntu desktop 10.04 LTS was an easy install. It's like the this hardware was made for it!
* snappy response (dual core, four thread processor)
* YouTube, Hulu look fine on full screen
* Sound is excellent
* SD card reader works
* Printer set it self up automatically when plugged in. (Old HP Laserjet 1100 using a Cables to Go 16899 USB to parallel printer adapter)
* Scanner just worked with Xsane - no setup (Cannon Canoscan LIDE 50)
* Using USB mouse and keyboard
* Suspend just works
* 1 gig ram (uses about 157 meg without any programs open. 230 meg when watching YouTube)
* Draws about 15 watts on my watt meter
* Small size, Quite (no fan) Great price! which includes ram and hard drive

Cons: None so far!

Other Thoughts: This is a great small computer for everyday use. It seems to just do everything well and uses very little power. You could pay ten times as much and still have a computer that just does everything well.

5 out of 5 eggsBest Value Hardware (Perfect for Ubuntu box)

Pros: The small case is silent, fanless, and provides adequate cooling.

Performs better than expected and quite adequately for an office computer doing basic office things like scanning, printing, file sharing, GrooveShark, LibreOffice, and of course surfing.

Cons: VGA connector on back has no sockets for securing a cable with bolts to the back of the case.

You MAY need to update the BIOS to get the Wireless to work in Ubuntu 10.10

Other Thoughts: Did not test HD Playback or use as a HTPC

Used Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Edition to "trim the fat"

Online Flash like Pandora is the only thing i've seen bring this thing to it's knees. I recommend using Pithos for playing pandora.

Uninstalled OpenOffice and installed LibreOffice, saw nominal performance increase but the usability for non-linux folks was greatly increased. Installed Google Chrome Beta and it FLYS across the web.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Buy; Multi-Use

Pros: Small footprint, on board WiFi, generous I/O's, HDMI output.

Cons: Difficult to find BIOS update required for WiFi, plastic case makes me nervous; flimsy.

Other Thoughts: Simply, this is an excellent buy. I implemented this machine as a kiosk due to the small footprint and mount ability. It runs Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7 flawlessly. After being so surprised by the overall size, ability and features of this computer I intend on purchasing another for a media center at home.

Regarding the BIOS issue, there are multiple forum posts addressing the issue. At this time I was unable to find a simple, one step process that could easily be followed by the computer novice or average for that matter. However, there are solutions out there that work. The Shuttle company is virtually useless on the issue. I found my solution on an Ubuntu/Linux related forum (BIOS 1.09) and the bootable usb utility in a link within the post.

If you are strongly considering this purchase don't let the BIOS issue scare you away, computers are simple if you have good resources, follow directions and go slow. Google and forums are your friends on your path to becoming a computer
