4 out of 5 eggsNice small machine

Pros: *Small enough to fit practically anywhere, including VESA mount.
*Easy to set up and install OS except wireless (see Cons)
*BIOS features dynamic boot device selection/ordering, which may not be the behavior you want/expect. If you boot with a thumb drive inserted, and there's no OS on it.....
*Kensington lock ready
*Works fine with Windows XP

Cons: *Lack of documentation
*Wireless did not activate automatically. You may find faqId=1953 on the Shuttle website useful.

Other Thoughts: We are considering using these on carts and in exam rooms to run browser-based EMR software. Runs great now. We'll see how reliable the unit is after a few months.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great!

Pros: Silent (fanless)
Boots from USB, CD, HD or network (whatever it finds) without changing BIOS settings
Dual core Atom (Linux sees 4 CPUs)
Shuttle has been making small form factor PCs for years

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: I opened the box and less than an hour later I had a fully functional (Logitech) Squeeze Server running on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. This serves music from my NAS to multiple Logitech SqueezeBox derivatives inside and outside my house 24/7/365. Squeeze Server is controlled via a web interface so the lack of high-end graphics in this PC is not a detractor.

I thought I'd have to change the boot settings; but, it saw my 4GB thumb drive plugged in the front and booted from it the first time. Due to other reviews, I thought I'd need to tell Ubuntu about the network stuff; but, Ubuntu found and used it right away.

This may be the easiest install I've ever done!

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Fanless design, virtually silent
Small
Efficient
Full Linux support

Cons: 2GB RAM max
Ethernet is *not* GigE!

Other Thoughts: I bought this because it seemed to meet my necessary criteria for being a low-power, fanless device with Gigabit ethernet according to Newegg’s spec data. Shame on me for trusting this information blindly! This device has only a 10/100 ethernet device (JMicron JMC260). If you are looking for something with GigE, look elsewhere.

1 out of 5 eggsNot a Video Device

Pros: Newegg let me return it.

Cons: Under Win7 and Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook, this device is incapable of playing video via a player or flash/browser.

Other Thoughts: This machine is significantly underpowered to the extent that its not clear what purpose it serves.

3 out of 5 eggsNice package, but missing essential things

Pros: Sharp looking, small package. I replaced the stock hard drive with an SSD, and actual power consumption is only 14-16 watts. Stays cool and completely quiet due to fanless design.

It also runs Ubuntu 10.04 without problems. During installation, ubuntu does not recognize the network adapter. The fix for this is to load the "jme" driver with modprobe or /etc/modules.

It is also relatively straightforward to open and it was easy to replace a hard drive with an Intel 40 GB SSD.

Cons: I wanted to use it as a fanless, cool, low consumption server. Unfortunately, the BIOS/mobo is missing an essential feature that so far was on every other PC or server that I owned: specifically, there is no option to automatically boot on power restore. Thus, any power interruption would mean that it needs to be powered on manually. This was a big bummer and a disappointment since it is such a common feature.

I also found it difficult to configure it for Wakeup on LAN. It does not seem to keep that setting.

Other Thoughts: It runs at 55-65 degrees and the CPU reports 104C as the limit, so it stays pretty cool.

It is slow, but that was to be expected with the Atom CPU and fanless design.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It's a nice little power-efficient computer, at a good price. Wireless seems ok once it's connected. Does what I bought it for -- browsing, email, word processing, & modest Standard-Def htpc tasks for the bedroom TV.

Cons: Way underdocumented.

I have not been able to locate the 1.0.9 bios on the support website, and this bios allegedly relieves some wireless issues by making the wireless default "on."

Theres a program installed from the driver disk called "ControlAP" that, when run, provides an on-screen "soft switch" that turns wireless on -- no other way to turn it on, no "hot key" combination, just this program, and no documentation that refers to it. The 1.0.8 bios has an option to "disable ControlAP" -- I gather this may switch wireless on, will check.

With wireless on, I had the devil's time making the connection. Wouldn't connect to a linksys access point until I changed the broadcast channel -- while my other wireless devices [a roku settop box and an iphone] worked fine on the default ch. 6, and then on ch. 1 that I switched to.

When I called Shuttle US to cancel the trouble ticket that was created, they seemed quite interested in how I got it to work

Other Thoughts: Shuttle US staff were nice and competent, but underinformed.

4 out of 5 eggsXS35-704 first impression

Pros: Super quiet except when DVD is running but that's expected. Venting is clever, all four sides are open with this mesh plate covered by the plastic case. The one-click install for ALL of it's drivers was really nice. Form factor is really small. Liked the SD card slot and a USB port in front. Nice long power cable.

Cons: I wished it had a slotless dvd loader instead of cheapo laptop style drive. One app they loaded was a backup program so I could do with out that trialware. Not sure I like the fact that with the VGA plug you can screw it in which seemed odd so hopefully it doesn't fall out. Didn't see a method to boot from USB, only CD, HD, & network. The BIOS has a setting for the wireless to always be ON, make sure that's on otherwise you'll waste time trying to make it work. Don't care for the 2gb memory limit. Don't care for power bricks but it's fairly small which was good.

Other Thoughts: Bought to just browse the internet, basic ms-word and excel, play music. No HDMI port so not for an HTPC, look at the next model up. I don't know what was wrong with Shuttle's website but I was unable to download the latest BIOS update for most of the day but eventually I got it, maybe just a bad day but there support site could be better. Loaded Windows 7 which ran fine, just disabled a bunch un-needed services to trim down the OS fat. Documentation is limited so don't be expecting some step by step guide.
