The XPC Barebone SH61R4 is based on Intel's H61 Express chipset for second-generation Intel Core processors (LGA1155) and features new, energy-efficient technologies and innovative functions like USB 3.0 for the office and home environment. It allows for up to three drives to be installed and can operate up to 8 GB of DDR3 memory at the same time. For expansions, one slot for PCI-E x16 2.0 (graphics cards), PCI-E x1 2.0 and mini PCI-E x1 2.0 (expansion cards) is available. The two digital monitor connectors on the rear can be controlled by the graphics function integrated in the Intel Core processors - without any add-on graphics card required in the PC. The front panel can be customized by adding individual design motifs for the maximum individuality possible.

  • newegg Supports Intel 32nm Sandy Bridge Processors The SH61R4 features Intel H61 chipset to support the 2nd Generation Intel Core processor family (Sandy Bridge). Sandy Bridge is the codename for Intel's new 32nm processor microarchitecture introduced in early 2011. It is the most sweeping architectural transition from Intel since the introduction of Pentium 4. In addition up to four CPU cores, the design incorporates the memory controller, PCIe links and the graphics processor. This integration brings higher performance, lower platform power consumption and more compact packaging. The integrated graphics processor (IGP) has become more capable. It can decode and encode H.264 highdefinition video streams. The architecture provides a high-bandwidth, ring-style interconnect between the cores with their associated L3 cache partitions and the IGP. This also allows the IGP to expand its available bandwidth by making use of the L3 cache.
  • newegg The R4 chassis design: clean, customizable, small and easy to build Shuttle XPCs offer the performance of a desktop PC at a third of the size while using standard desktop components. The construction and cover of the R4 chassis is made of aluminium. This leads to a stylish-robust appearance and makes it a popular design. The front of this XPC can easily be customized by simply changing the mylar behind the acylic front plate. Add your individual design such as a photo, graphics or a company logo to the front panel in just a few steps. The meticulously designed internal layout features pre-routed cables to reduce clutter, increase airflow and make the installation of components easy.
  • newegg Intelligent cooling Shuttle's exclusive Heatpipe Cooling technology with variable speed control automatically ensures maximum system stability and quiet operation in this aluminum Shuttle Mini-PC. Te warm air is specifically transferred out of the chassis by means of cleverly arranged components, which enables a large number of parts to be cooled simultaneously in the air flow. At no time can heat build up and adversely affect the stability of the system.
  • newegg Dual View Technology with two digital video ports Dual View technology offers multiple display support for up to two separate monitors. This helps to improve on productivity by allowing to spread multiple windows across two monitors while working with them simultaneously. The SH61R4 features two digital DVI video outputs.
  • newegg Internal Drives Up to one optical drive and two hard disks can be fitted in the SH61R4. To reduce heat and improve on airflow, the drive rack built into the SH61R4 leaves generous space between the hard disks. Intelligently engineered airflow mechanics channels cool air to where it is needed most - protecting components and providing optimal performance.
  • newegg The fastest connection to external peripheral devices available to date The USB 3.0 connectors of this model allow for data transfer of up to 5 Gbit/s (625 MB/s). This enables external devices such as USB hard disks to be connected and run at nearly the same speed as their internal siblings. USB 3.0 is downward compatible so that also devices of previous USB generations can be hooked up.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid build

Pros: Detailed user manual makes it easy to assemble. Very solid barebone. I use it to install Fedora on it and things work out of the box.

Cons: As others point out, the optical drive button on the panel is too close to the power button. Besides it will be ideal if it has card readers and HDMI onboard.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Everything went together smoothly. Posted first time. Installed Win 8 without any problems. Small size fit perfectly in a media cabinet.

Cons: Can be tricky to put together if you don't take your time.

Other Thoughts: I pulled a G620 and a GTX 460 from an old build and put it in this shuttle box for a HTPC/Light gaming machine hooked up to a 1080p TV with Windows 8. Everything worked fine, and I have had no problems with it.

2 out of 5 eggsThe new shuttles are super finiky about ram

Pros: used to be high quality.
like the form factor

Cons: I have built several of these but the last two built on this case have both failed to post with the original ram i purchased. one was on the recommended list and one wasn't. i think these boards in this thing are quite unstable..:(

Other Thoughts: Going to shift away from shuttle if these issues persist.

5 out of 5 eggsNice, but there are snags

Pros: Small, quiet, and very well put together.

Three heat pipes come from the CPU to a reasonable radiator at the back of the case, an 80mm fan mounts right in front of that.

SATA cables are tied down and routed to where they are needed.

Cons: Connectors to hold the cooler in place weren't obvious in their use and are based on expanding nylon pegs through the motherboard rather than screws.

Optimized BIOS defaults wouldn't run with Windows XP

Power switch is way too close to the CD/DVD eject button.

Other Thoughts: Booting an installed copy of XP consistently failed and rebooted, the XP installer from CD halted before entering Windows or copying files to the hard drive. Using the STOP ERROR I was able to determine the problem as the SATA mode chosen. The defaults are to use AHCI, it needs to be IDE.

5 out of 5 eggsPOST/BIOS issues resolved - it was due to an external drive.

Pros: I don't know how to edit my last review, so here is the amendment: The system was not booting because of the external DVD-ROM drive I had plugged into it. The drive is powered completely via USB (it has two USB plugs for this purpose, so it can draw enough current to run the motor.) For some reason, the machine's circuitry didn't like this (it probably required too many milliamps) and it refused to boot.

I used a USB thumb drive to install Debian and it worked without a hitch. It has been running reliably since then. If I could rescind the last review I would, but there you have it.

Cons: It seemed to have trouble supplying enough current to run a USB-powered DVD drive. I don't know that this is necessarily the board's fault. As soon as I took the DVD drive out of the equation, ALL of the problems went away. DVDs are a pain anyhow and I think I'll use thumb drives from now on.

Other Thoughts: I bought this machine to use as a file server and do some other things. It's on all the time, so efficiency was a concern. If you want to get more efficiency, I recommend getting an Ivy Bridge processor, as they are designed to be more energy efficient, and (if the price/performance is right for you) solid state drives. I have a Core i7-3770K gaming machine with dual GeForce GTX 660s and a SSD, and the system only uses about 36 watts on idle. My last system used 125 watts on idle!

4 out of 5 eggsPerfect little box

Pros: Small, quite, good construction. Nice factory heatsink/fan.

Cons: 2 things
-While installing the processor heatsink and fan, the clips holding in on take a good amount of force. Felt like i was breaking the tabs as I installed it.
-The power button is RIGHT next to your CD-ROM drive. Before I changed the power button settings, I ended up turning it off by mistake a few times. Thats just me tho

Other Thoughts: I'm happy with my purchase. Bought it to be able to work from home, without using my louder gaming computer. Very pleased with the combo pack Newegg put together.

1 out of 5 eggsWon't POST or load BIOS setup.

Pros: Nice form factor, and the design of the CPU heat pipe system is novel.

Cons: I've been trying to get Debian installed on this thing for the last five hours. At this point it's become so unreliable at booting that I don't know what else to do. How can their QA be so bad that they let something out the door that will not even go into its own BIOS setup menu? Boo.

4 out of 5 eggsGREAT value, not-so-great reliability

Pros: Small form factor.
Very quiet.
Dual-DVI output.
Ivy Bridge processors supported after firmware upgrade.
Supports BR/DVD/CD drive + two internal 3.5" HDDs.

Cons: Occasionally failed to POST, requiring multiple restarts.
Suspected motherboard failure inside2 months.
Stock PSU not sufficient to run newer, powerful gfx cards.
RMA process does not cover return postage costs.

Other Thoughts: Bought the SH67H3 last year to replace my media PC, and after 12 months of flawless performance I decided to replace my desktop with the SH61R4. Selling factors were Ivy Bridge support, dual DVI outputs on the mobo, and the small form factor.

With a two weeks of building the PC, it sometimes refused to POST first time, requiring two or three restarts in order to POST. 7 weeks in, it refused to boot completely. I followed the troubleshooting procedures, verified the PSU was working, verified the memory was OK, verified the processor was OK, so all signs pointed to a mobo failure.

Started the RMA process. NOT HAPPY that the product fails inside 2 months, but *I* still have to pay to ship it back to be repaired/replaced.

Unfortunately, USPS lost the package while out for delivery, so I can't say for certain that the mobo failed. Fortunately, I had insurance for the full amount.

Will I buy another? ABSOLUTELY. That one failure aside, build quality is excellent. Shuttle

4 out of 5 eggsNot Bad I like it

Pros: Put together fairly easy and runs good for small unit. Worked great with Linux Mint 13. I thought I need a video card but the on board was good enough for me. I did not install any high end games. But wonderful for my 42 in Visio TV to watch you tube videos.

Cons: Have to do your research on power consumption I used a 65W i5 processor and if I need to, I could use a low power video card but the on board was good enough for me. I dual boot with windows 7 and Linux mint. There were no issues with Linux mint. Actually the Built in LAN had to get special drivers for win 7 for some reason. The Shuttle website has calculator that was handy in researching my options with this.
