With the SZ68R5 you get a barebone that's bursting with features and functions. As a first for Shuttle, this machine supports "Smart Response Technology" (SSD caching), which enables an SSD drive to be used for increased speed (e.g. an mSATA-SSD in the Mini-PCIe slot). The SZ68R5 also uses intelligent Intel Core processors with LGA1155 socket. Up to 32 GB DDR3 RAM can be spread across four memory sockets. A 500 W power supply with 80-PLUS certification comes pre-installed.

  • newegg Small, but easy to install The Shuttle XPC Barebone SZ68R5 consists of a stylish case with preinstalled mainboard, power supply unit (PSU) and cables. Despite its small form factor (a third of the size of a standard PC) it offers outstanding connectivity, functionality and performance. Shuttle XPC Barebones are completely customizable meaning users can pick certain components on their own to ideally match their individual needs. The meticulously designed internal layout features pre-routed cables to reduce clutter, increase airflow and make the installation of components easy.
  • newegg Intel Z68 Express Chipset with Intel Smart Response Technology The Shuttle XPC Barebone SZ68R5 supports the 2nd generation Intel Core i7 / i5 / i3 / Pentium processors in the LGA1155 package, with memory and PCI Express controllers integrated. The Intel Z68 Express Chipset also supports iGPU function, letting users enjoy the latest Intel integrated graphic performance. Z68 chipset’s Intel Smart Response Technology boosts overall system performance by using a fast SSD (min 18.6GB available) as a cache for frequently accessed operations. Key benefits are expedited hard drive speeds, reduced load and wait times and maximized storage utilization.
  • newegg Dual-slot graphic cards? No problem! A fast X16-PCI-E slot enables the use of modern 3D graphics cards and other expansion cards that have to transfer huge amounts of data at ultra-rapid speeds.
  • newegg 8-channel HD audio The superior high-definition sound with digital SPDIF output not only gives that perfect cinema feeling at home, it also offers optimal sound quality for your Skype VOIP telephone conferencing. Conveniently located ports ensure ultimate user friendliness.
  • newegg Intelligent cooling Shuttle's exclusive Heatpipe Cooling technology with variable speed control automatically ensures maximum system stability and quiet operation in this aluminium Shuttle Mini-PC. Cleverly arranged components enable themselves to be cooled simultaneously in the air flow. Instead of swirling around the chassis, as is the case with conventional solutions, the warm air is specifically transferred out of the chassis.
  • newegg Communication in the fast lane The integrated gigabit LAN chipset opens up completely new possibilities for communication with no restriction on the speed of data transfer. Say goodbye to information bottlenecks, whether in the company network or for home Internet access.

4 out of 5 eggsshuttle gaming rig

Pros: Compact sff form factor
500w power supply
Standard ITX form factor
Room for full size video card

Cons: OC capability limited, no undervolt, no cas timing control, better oc controls needed.
Don't like the ODD bay cover button, but it works.
First unit had to be RMA'd.

Other Thoughts: Replacing the ICE cooler with an Asetek 545LC liquid cooler, and doing a bios mod, I am able to run at my 2600k @ 4.6ghz with an R7970 Video card and game like a madman. 6+ months of use, and never a hiccup or an over heat. My mem is 1600 CL8, the shuttle runs it at 1600 CL11 with bios 104. Later bios supports new cpus.

4 out of 5 eggs4/5

Pros: Not the first shuttle ive owned and a good machine out of the box. Stock fans and fan settings have it fairly quiet just browsing the web/light gaming. CPU heatsink mounting holes are standard intel 1155 so you can explore other options down the road.

Case looks great, has HDMI if you want to use onboard video, and supports dual slot PCIe video cards if not. Just make sure your processor supports onboard video first if you want to go that route.

Cons: Power supply, I give shuttle big props here for upping the wattage from 300 to 500w and increasing the fan diameter from 40 to 60mm, making it able to support modern dual slot video cards with high power requirements.
However as I run my CPU and video card near 100% load 24/7 in a high ambient temperature environment, the power supply handles this load just fine, it just does it with increased noise from the 60mm fan.
After a couple months of this I went out and replaced it with an ATX power supply that sits on top of the case. Shuttle motherboard uses standard power connectors so this works fine either way just a little quieter now.

If you game a lot id highly consider a rear exhausting video card if you want to keep the case cover on. I don't so it didn't matter to me but the extra heat dump inside your system will drive up system temps and noise if you leave the cover on.

Other Thoughts: As long as you dont hit 24/7 100% cpu and gpu load in a high ambient temperature environment this is a great SFF setup, and even if you do there are options available to suit you.

5 out of 5 eggsamazing

Pros: this little thing supports an nvidia 560gtx graphics card without issue. supports dual video power

Cons: cooling is a problem with a large graphics card. must leave case off. everything runs fine so this is a non issue for me.

Other Thoughts: excellent little workstation. i am running vmware ESXi5 with 28 gb of ram. no problems whatsoever.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Case!

Pros: Got this case for a "home server" system I'm still finishing a build on, It sports 4TB of hard drive space and an I7 2600K. It really got the job done, keeping the CPU, ram and hard drives all very cool in a very small space. I would definitely recommend it to a friend.

Cons: A bit expensive for the purpose, but there isnt a whole lot that can be done about that.

4 out of 5 eggsGood system

Pros: Nice form factor and power supply. Good looking for the type of system that it is.

Cons: 1. As mentioned before by another reviewer there are two sizes of screws included in the kit. Just be aware of this and separate them prior to building.

2. Removed Power supply to get to the inside easier. Tight fit.

3. CD rom drive button drove me crazy until I aligned the screws to hole marked 3 then the button didn't seem so flimsy when I pushed it in.

Other Thoughts: Couldn't get ESXi to run on it. Maybe it was the cd rom that I was using.

Built three of these so far. Only issue is slight buzzing with speakers on one of them - haven't tracked that down yet.

4 out of 5 eggsUpdate

Pros: Works now! Is fast.

Cons: The bios said that it did support the processor that i had purchased, but bios was not shipped updated.. Had to wait a week and a half for the RMA bios to arrive. Once plugged in, it was off and running..

Other Thoughts: Need to have something ASUS does when all else fails go in a low level BIOS boot mode to flash if your shipping out old boards with support you say is there, but is not when delivered to the customer.

4 out of 5 eggsMixed Bag, Great Overall

Pros: Quiet (for a Shuttle), VERY fast, sips power, runs very reliably when you get a working unit.

Cons: So-so build quality, 1st unit was DOA because of bent LGA pins- poor QC from Shuttle. Cable management is a nightmare. Mobo layout is problematic. The front USB3 header is in just the wrong place, banging into your drive tray. Also, if you have a video card with top-mounted power connectors, that will also require some cable gymnastics to get around the drive tray.

Other Thoughts: I have a 10-year history of ownership with Shuttles, dating all the way back to their original Northwood-based units. I've owned at least 5 of them, if memory serves. This Shuttle is a decent entry in their lineup. My previous unit, the SP35P2Pro was a great computer- probably Shuttle's best-designed unit on the inside- but suffered from a few persistent BIOS shenanigans that hampered its upgradeability. Also, it's numerous fans made it sound like a jet turbine at load. This new unit is infinitely quieter (it helps to have an SSD, admittedly), but the interior layout leaves a lot to be desired. The materials are a step backwards, well.

However, once I got my unit up and running, all was forgiven. Cranked my 2600k up to 4.6 Ghz and this unit FLIES. Installation and setup of Win7Pro took under a 1/2 hour. Runs rock solid and suprisingly cool.

As long as I don't have to go fishing around inside this unit (except for the occasional upgrade), I will remain very pleased with

4 out of 5 eggsBest all around shuttle right now

Pros: Best shuttle case design to date. All Aluminum case, the PSU has been moved to the top of the rear of the case, (best placement yet), allowing for the PSU fan to exhaust the hot air at the top most regions of the case and more room to work with hands when installing cpu and ram. Upgradable MB, case fits the semi standard format of the Mini-ITX MB's.

Cons: Front very cheap feel, the SH67H3 has a much better front design even though it is not as finished looking as this one, all the flap and fold out doors are plastic and make this case feel very cheap.

Other Thoughts: 32GB Patriot Ram (2x PGD316G1333ELK)
i72600 (bought before the new i7's came out)
- recommend the i7 3770 to anyone that can afford it (2x GPU performance.)
WD750GB Green 3.5", WD500GB 2.5" & Vertex 3 120GB SSD
StarTech SATDOCK2520 (for 2x 2.5 drives)

Wish I could get the SH67H3 face with this one.

Worth the upgrade in price from the SH67H3
-300W to 500W PSU
-One more USB port in front
-Better air flow based on PSU placement
