5 out of 5 eggsSolid system with quality components

Pros: Everything about this system evokes good design with qualitly components. I'm running Xubuntu with a Celeron G1620 CPU, and the performance is outstanding. With the dual Ethernet ports, serial port, HDMI and DVI video out, and mini-PCIE slot; this system could be used for all kinds of embedded applications, dedicated router/firewall, etc., but it also does a fine job as a general purpose desktop system.

Cons: None that I can think of.

4 out of 5 eggsGood barebones system, unfortunate initial setup

Pros: Easy to setup, great support for Ubuntu 12.04.

Cons: When I first set it up and turned it on, there was power to everything but video. Only after disassembling and comparing the motherboard diagram to the actual motherboard did I discover that the voltage jumper was set to 3.3 instead of 5 (the default according to the diagram). Switching fixed it and it's working great now!

Other Thoughts: Dinged a point for voltage jumper being incorrectly set on shipping, others not as knowledgeable would not have known to look for this and returned it for replacement.

5 out of 5 eggsLove these little things!

Pros: I've put together 4 of these little beasties. They're nice and small, very quiet, and versatile.

The layout is tight but well thought out and easy to work with.

Big pro is that the NICs are supported under VMware ESXi 5.0/5.1!! These boxes are very nice white-box ESXi servers. If you wish to upgrade to 5.5, search for "Andreas Peetz ESXi 5.5 missing Realtek drivers". He details how to add the drivers back into the installation ISO.

Cons: None.

Some people mentioned high cost, but when you take into account Its very small size coupled with the fact that you're getting the motherboard, a case, a vesa mount, and the power supply it really isn't.

Other Thoughts: #1) i5-3470S, 16GB RAM, 250GB Samsung EVO mSATA, tiny USB flash drive - ESXi, VMs on NAS
#2) same as #1
#3) i3-3225, 8GB RAM, 120GB Crucial M500 - HTPC in living room, content on NAS
#4) i3-3225, 8GB RAM, 120GB Crucial M500 - Astaro/Sophos firewall

5 out of 5 eggssmall and efficient

Pros: solid construction, takes up very little space, plenty of usb connections and monitor outputs, simple to build, very very quiet, no problems after 5 months now

Cons: not really a con - no optical drives but I knew that and have my OS on a bootable usb

Other Thoughts: built for my exam lane at my office - small physical and power footprint is great and is more than sufficient to run all my health record software quickly, attach all the peripherals I need, and run quietly.

5 out of 5 eggsWhy buy NUC?

Pros: You can read the technical specs, but it is definitely everything it says.

I am very impressed at the power (Desktop CPU), but yet so quite. The heatsink integrated into the case really does a great job dissipating the heat.

I use it for an HTPC, so it had to be quite. However, I run file services, home automation software, and all of my entertainment needs through this thing with no lag.

I loaded it with 8GB (1 stick future upgrade), 256GB msata, 3TB 2.5 sata, 3 tuner cards and I5 3470S 65watt desktop cpu.

I have not even used the USB3.0 yet, as I can not believe I have 3.25TB inside a case the size of my hands.

Cons: none that I can tell.

Other Thoughts: This thing is definitely commercial grade. The inside heatsinks and other circuits are massive.

4 out of 5 eggsWonderful little box

Pros: Very well laid out box for such small size. This thing is easy to assemble, packed tight, and runs cool. Also very sturdy.

Cons: torqued hard drive bracket, the hard drive bracket came torqued which made it hard to fully secure the hard drive from both sides. Something ot be aware of,

Other Thoughts: I bought this for carrying around and later use as a home server. it is excelent for carrying a full desktop when needed. Also, it runs very quiet with my Intel i3 3.4 Ghz even when running 3d renders. I've been quite happy with it so far. The board layout is great and very well compartmentalized. The only gripe I have is that the hard drive mounting bracket was torqued, so I have only been able to mount one side of the hard drive. Despite this, the entire buld is still quite solid.

5 out of 5 eggsGood little ESXi Whitebox

Pros: This makes a nice simple ESXi whitebox. It doesn't support some of the more advanced options (like Direct I/O passtrough), but it works as a simple server. I had a spare i3-2130 processor from a desktop upgrade and 8GB of laptop RAM from upgrading my laptop. This was a great option that allows me to use both for an additional ESXi server on my network.
Low Power requirements
Dual Gigabit NICs mean I could run this as a firewall appliance if I wanted (pfSense anyone).

Cons: None really. This suited my purposes.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little computer

Pros: Size is great. Very well built with new capacitors on the motherboard. Great CPU heat sink and fans. So far so good. Seems to run very cool using specky and the cpu runs at about 110 F, motherbord around 85 and the Hard Drive around 90 F. Very nice build and very happy with how quiet the thing is. Thanks Shuttle.

Cons: A little bit of a challenge installing the lower memory chip. Did not want to install windows via the usb dvd I was using. Kind of finniky so I installed from a USB stick and all went well after that. No 15 pin video port only HDMI. So buy an adapter if you you only have a 15 pin video connector.

5 out of 5 eggsSmall and Speedy

Pros: Small
Solid, well built
Well designed and easy to put together
Excellent cooling

Cons: No eSATA

Other Thoughts: Well disigned, solid construction and well built. Simple to build, took maybe a 1/2 hour at most to build and mount on the back of my monitor. The cooling design of Shuttle is outstanding and this unit shows it. I'm very pleased

I built it with

i7 quad core
16 GB Mushkin RAM
240 GB Mushkin mSATA SSD
1 TB Hitachi HD

5 out of 5 eggsSolidly built product - like a tank!

Pros: Small form factor, rugged construction, vesa mount capable, well designed, and all metal case will help a LOT with heat dissipation. Excellent customer and technical support - super fast, super knowledgeable.

Cons: A little pricey, and the bundled instructions aren't that great. Also, be careful of using the USB3.0 ports to install Windows 7, which doesn't have native USB3.0 drivers - not an issue, just use one of the USB2.0 ports.
