4 out of 5 eggsGreat little home server

Pros: Silent, Runs Centos 6.4 Server / 64bit with 8GB RAM. Low Power usage. Runs VGA @1600x1200 with virtual frame buffer. Reboots after Power Failure (older variants did not). CPU Performance is - as expected - enough to run home server (Radius with MySQL, DHCP, Skype to SIP bridge, Asterisk). RS232 to connect to my firewall. Oh, did I mention it: SILENT !!!

Cons: Realtek 8188 Wifi is Junk (use 8192 driver for Linux if you have to). Replaced with Intel 6300 (but needed to tape-off 4 pins otherwise it would not boot, one SMD resistor is preventing the 6300 from fitting properly, so card is now not flat, but with a 15 deg angle - ugly, but it works). Gets a bit hot (I've seen up 175F, 80C). No Linux drivers for GMA 3650. Would not recomend for Desktop use, kind of slow.

Other Thoughts: I have 2 of these little Shuttles with SSD's one with the internal 3650 GPU and one with an ATI graphics card. Except for the Wifi, which I replaced in both of them with the Intel 6300 they're great little machines. The XS35GTA versions with ATI GPU can get hot (up to 200F) but normally hovers around 165F. No HD output on HDMI with the 3650 on Linux, but not a problem for me.

4 out of 5 eggsShuttle XS36VL

Pros: Small, silent, plenty of connectors, Runs XBMC very well after some tinkering.

Cons: Does not run Linux, Runs Win7 best without Aero.

Other Thoughts: Had some problems running HDMI video to 1080p. Turn off Aero to decrease processor load, and experiment with different codecs, and it runs well now. Wish there was a pure 1080p video output setting. Would make type easier to read on a large screen. But not a huge problem.
