This review is from: Shuttle DS81L Intel H81 2 x 204Pin SO-DIMM Black Mini / Booksize Barebone System
Pros: Seems like it will be a nice space saving PC for my office. Went together pretty easily.
Cons: As Vernon mentioned, no SD Card slot. But, I noticed that the SD card reader was populated and Windows Disk Management indicated there was a dirve there, so I took the motherboard out and tested it - sure enough, it works.
So, it seems Shuttle has a QA issue with this box or the labels for this box where the SD card slot is covered up.
Other Thoughts: The metal casing has a slot, but the label did not. So I took an x-acto knife and cut the slot out of the label. Now, I need to get more thermal compound since I had to under the CPU cooler to take out the MB.
If you want to try to cut it out from the front (I don't recommend as pieces of the label end up inside the case), the center of the cutout is about 2.25" over and 0.25" up from the bottom right corner of the chassis. I recommend taking the chassis apart (4 screws) and the MB out (4 screws plus the CPU cooler screws and cut it out.
It doesn't look as nice as a properly finished label, but it is not worth the effort to RMA or return it just for the label.

Pros: Solid construction. Adequate cooling. Comes with all required mounting hardware. Socketed CPU. Dual NIC
Cons: I purchased multiple units with the expectation that they would have SD card readers. Some units came with readers, but others did not. There is no distinction in model numbers between the two variants. Disappointing.

Pros: I have been very impressed with this little computer. It is smaller than I was expecting and seems to be built very solid. Components fit as expected and the whole thing came together very easily. Lots of features for such a small box. I particularly like the physical serial port in the back. Oh yeah, there is also a SECOND physical serial port that can be 232, 422, or 485. How often do you see that on a PC these days! I will definitely buy more of these when needed.
Cons: The only con I found was the with the VISA mounting screws. You can mount this PC in multiple positions. The "lower" row of screws on the chassis did not seem to be taped very well so the screws were really tight. This was not a real problem because I got all four screws in at least a full turn each and its not like its moving around or anything on my desk!
Other Thoughts: Get one, you will not be disappointed!

Pros: Small, quiet, easy to work inside.
Cons: Don't fool yourself into thinking you're going to (easily) use this for Sophos UTM Home or ESXi 6.0. Neither of them install easily. Sophos UTM because it uses HDMI and DisplayPort exclusively - there is no VGA port and Sophos UTM is designed for enterprise-like appliances which have standard VGA ports and serial console ports. And ESXi because the Realtek NICs do not have drivers included in the generic ESXi ISO.
You'll have to do some custom work to get either running on this box.
Other Thoughts: I should have done more research into the compatibility of this hardware with the software I intended to use on it before purchasing. If you intend to run Windows or a popular Linux distro, this box will probably work great for you.

This review is from: Shuttle DS81L Intel H81 2 x 204Pin SO-DIMM Black Mini / Booksize Barebone System
Pros: I bought this for a special kiosk PC I was making for a digital signage company.
I used it's VESA mount to strap it to the back of a 22in touchscreen monitor that can sit portrait or landscape. (Let me be clear the monitor had a VESA mount on the back, and I used the VESA mount hardware on the shuttle to mount it to the back of the monitor)
THIS LITTLE THING IS AMAZING. I put an SSD, 4GB of dual channel RAM, and Windows 7 on it with an i5-4670K CPU. THIS THING ROCKS.
I can run three monitors with this one little machine strapped to the back of the touchscreen. One HDMI from touchscreen to shuttle (portrait or landscape), and two other monitors with the dual display-ports on the back of the shuttle.
Other PROS: The form factor is small, the Integrated Cooling Device for the CPU is great, it supports haswell architecture CPUs, has enough space for RAM, and SSD (comfortably).
Cons: Not really a con: I wish it didn't use intel HD graphics controller to set the position between portrait and landscape, but it's a simple keyboard shortcut to change it.
Other Thoughts: I thought I was going to have to buy a low profile CPU cooler, but I didn't realize until it was shipped to my front door that it had integrated cooling built in. I know I saw that somewhere on the description, but it slipped my mind.

Pros: I was looking for a unit that was both small and powerful and boy was I impressed. This machine delivers just that! I Paired it with an Intel 840 SSD and this little guy just takes off! Boot times are < 10 seconds. The onboard graphics on my i5-4590s is even good enough to do some mid level gaming.
Cons: None
Other Thoughts: Every day I am just in awe of this little guy. I was thinking of getting an Intel NUC, but the industrial chassis and the performance over a physical CPU vs an Embedded one made this the ideal solution.

Pros: Took me no longer than 10 minutes to assemble this machine. I needed a unit that was low profile and at the same time perform. Following the support list for this CPU (maximum TDP of 65Watts) I was able to pair this unit with an i3-4330 and I am very satisfied with the performance. In essence, I have the full capabilities of a desktop into a machine that’s the size of a DVD-ROM drive.
Cons: Not Really a con but if you need to enable mSATA you will have to adjust it on the BIOS.
Other Thoughts: I was not able to find their recommended memory to use, but per my experience as long as it's memory from a recognized vendor and it meets the motherboard specifications you will be fine.
