4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Small
Solid build

Cons: Runs very warm
Clover adapter isn't included

Other Thoughts: I wanted to use the NUC to install SteamOS on. It took some work to do, but I finally did it. I was very impressed with how well it ran games and even the home streaming of games. The only problem is that it ran pretty warm, so make sure it's placed in a well ventilated area.

One thing to remember before buying this is that it is incomplete. You still need to purchase an mSATA SSD, 204-pin RAM, a cloverleaf power cable, and(maybe) a mini-PCI wireless card.

I don't understand why the power cable is incomplete. They're not expensive and it just adds something else that you have to buy to an already incomplete system.

All in all, I love the idea of the book-sized PCs and I think the NUC is perfect for someone that does light computing.

2 out of 5 eggsNo Power Cord? Really?

Pros: Feels solid, chassis looks well designed.

Cons: No power cord included, so you have to chase down a 3 prong cord. With as much as Intel spent on the box they put it in they should have included a power cord. The sound that plays while opening the box was cute the first time, now all I hear is "yes, the box has an electronic chime that plays when opening the box but we were too cheap to include a power cord"

Other Thoughts: Refocus your priorities Intel.

4 out of 5 eggsPerplexing issues with memory compatibility..

Pros: Very small footprint. Works great once the quirks with the memory were worked out. Comes with VESA mount, and seems to run Mint, Windows 7, Windows 8 with no problems whatsoever.

Cons: Runs hot. Reviews state requires 1.35v RAM due to the 4th gen i-Series processor. My findings concur with this, only it required cranking the voltage up to 1.5v. I tried 3 different brands of 1.5v memory (the ram socket even says 1.5v) before going with a 1.35v G-Skill 2x4gb set. It booted up but started crashing immediately. Just for grins I cranked the voltage up to 1.5v and have never had a problem since.

Other Thoughts: Seriously considering purchasing the Silverstone replacement case just for the cooling issues.

4 out of 5 eggsFine little server/firewall box

Pros: Fast, low power draw, noiseless. I am using this box with a 240 GB SSD and 2 external USB-to-Ethernet adapters as a Fedora 19 linux fileserver/webserver/firewall. I have had it running for about 6 months now and the little feller is rock solid.

Cons: No ethernet ports. Had a hard time finding a linux that would install properly (Fedora Core 19 works), probably because of UEFI vs legacy BIOS issues.

Other Thoughts: With this unit, a couple of memory sticks, external USB-to-RJ45 adapters, and an SSD HD, it is possible to build a fast, silent, solid-state linux file/webserver for $500.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Unit

Pros: Small, fast boot, good overall very response, & 3 year warranty

Cons: Intel shows the retail price on this model should be $159.00. Price at Newegg isn't bad, with free ship, & their great customer service. Some other large retailers are trying to sell these at 3-4 times the suggested retail.

No mickey mouse power cord.

Other Thoughts: I've built dozens of Intel NUCs for plant floor use (Wi-Fi) & they work very well. If you need Ethernet (LAN connection) don't buy this model. Many other variations are available.

2 out of 5 eggsNO ETHERNET

Pros: Very compact, sturdy case, VESA mount. i3 for less than $200.

Other Thoughts: Have bought several Intel NUC's, but this one through me for a loop. Did not suspect that they would even sell one without Ethernet, and the stock pictures do not clearly show this. Read the specs first.

3 out of 5 eggsIntel does not include AC cable, runs hot

Pros: Does what it's supposed to, can't speak to other OS but runs PCLinuxOS out of the box just fine. Decent range from wifi using the built in antenna

Cons: WHY do you not include the AC power cord Intel!?!?!?! Like everyone happens to have the mickey mouse three prong cable lying around?? Even when a system calls for the STANDARD 3 prong cable people include it! (see the picture, it is reflected in the quick start guide - they did not accidentally leave it out!) If you include the AC adapter why not the cord itself!?! This is just PLAIN STUPID.

Also tends to run pretty warm. Sure you can tweak the smart fan settings and the CPU fan goes up to 6000 rpm, but it could have probably used a slightly better heatsink so that's another star off.

5 out of 5 eggsThis box rocks!

Pros: Small, quiet, cool, easy to set up. I bought it with 2 x Crucial CT51264BF1339, Intel Centrino 6235 WiFi/Bluetooth and Crucial CT120M500SSD3 120GB SSD, plugged everything together and I was up and running Windows 7 to replace a large, old desktop. You'll need another working computer to go to the Intel website to download drivers and the important BIOS update.

Cons: No power cord supplied. I probably spent more time hunting down the special clover-leaf style cord than anything else.

5 out of 5 eggsRocks

Pros: It just works well. SSD, RAM WiFi and you're up. Running Win7 in an office. Fast quiet and it fits on the back of the monitor. Lookout Apple, this thing crushes your mini.

Cons: No power cord, but knew that going in. USB2 instead of 3. Should allow for 2.5" HDs, but it only allows SSD mSATA - oh well.
