4 out of 5 eggsVery quick, little computer

This review is from: Intel NUC (Next Unit of Computing) BOXNUC5I7RYH 2 x 204Pin SO-DIMM Intel Iris Graphics 6100 Aluminum and Plastic Black NUC Kit (Rock Canyon)

Pros: Very fast, compact, easy

Cons: Much noisier than expected, power adapter the worst shape ever

Other Thoughts: This is a beautiful, fast, easy computer. It's a thing that's very easy to love. However, it's much noisier than I expected. My wife has had the i5 version for about a year and it's totally silent. This one has a CPU fan that really gets to spinning when the computer get running. I was recompiling many packages in my system last night and the whine of the fan kept me awake. If you want a really quiet NUC, get the i5 version.
The power brick is the worse design ever. Who the F comes up with these things? It's long and narrow, but when you plug it into a power strip, it takes up one socket, and blocks two others! All they had to do was rotate the plug 90 degrees and it would only take up one socket. Sheesh!

2 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Intel NUC (Next Unit of Computing) BOXNUC5I7RYH 2 x 204Pin SO-DIMM Intel Iris Graphics 6100 Aluminum and Plastic Black NUC Kit (Rock Canyon)

Pros: 1) Excellent desktop computer replacement
2)Easy to assemble
3) Excellent design for portability or freeing up desk space
4) Utilizes 1866mhz RAM if added to system
5) Tech support through Intel is thorough (though a little slow at times)

Cons: 1) Consistent, known, issues through entire product line. (do a search for "NUC won't turn on" and "NUC USB doesn't work")
2) Can be finicky with the brand of RAM you use ( also make sure to use 1.35v RAM)
3) The first two I received worked great for a week and died in the same way (wouldn't turn on after a correct system shutdown)
4) The second one I received worked flawlessly in operation but one of the USB ports arrived dead.

Other Thoughts: Intel tech support was great trying to help me through the issues I had with BIOS upgrades and and loss of functionality, but ultimately this system was not ready for prime time when it was released.

I will wait another 6 months and try one of their sky lake i5 systems. Hopefully, with further research and development, they can work the kinks out of what is, conceptually, a wonderful product.

I really hope they get the issues figured out because this product fit my niche of traveling school teacher wonderfully. It was great to have the speed and power of an i7 processor and 16 gigs of ram paired with a solid state drive and 2 terabytes of storage space. All I had to do was walk into my classroom, plug this machine into my projector and Intelliboard, and I was in business. It handled everything I could throw at it without blinking an eye.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Desktop Replacement

This review is from: Intel NUC (Next Unit of Computing) BOXNUC5I7RYH 2 x 204Pin SO-DIMM Intel Iris Graphics 6100 Aluminum and Plastic Black NUC Kit (Rock Canyon)

Pros: 1. Fast
2. Compact
3. Works with both M2 and 2.5" hard drives.
4. Bluetooth and Wifi included

Cons: 1. Fan is audible.
2. Bluetooth and Wifi are soldered down.

Other Thoughts: First, I'll start with the components I used.

N82E16820148956 - Crucial MX200 M.2 500GB SATA
2 x N82E16820148733 - Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900)
OS - Debian Linux SID

With these components, the NUC is about 2 times faster for compiling applications then the i5 based NUC I bought about 3 years ago.

The NUC is fast and compact, but as I mentioned on the default BIOS settings the fan is audible so if you want this to watch movies on you are probably better off getting the i5 or i3 based NUC.

The other main disadvantage is that the wireless is soldered onto the board. This means that the wireless can't be upgraded. This is a big minus for me and why I took off an egg.

As is typically, the NUC shipped with the first release BIOS. So one of the first things I did was flash the BIOS with the latest off the Intel website.

5 out of 5 eggsPowerful Little Unit

This review is from: Intel NUC (Next Unit of Computing) BOXNUC5I7RYH 2 x 204Pin SO-DIMM Intel Iris Graphics 6100 Aluminum and Plastic Black NUC Kit (Rock Canyon)

Pros: Compact, Powerful, Easy Setup, Can Play Games

Cons: None, so far.

Other Thoughts: I have worked both with the NUC and the BRIX from Gigabyte and, with this gen (based on Intel's 5th gen procs), I prefer the NUCs from Intel over the BRIX for a number of reasons.

After putting each together I noticed the construction and layout of the internal components of the NUC is done a little smarter than the BRIX. The hard drive cage on the cap of the NUC has a really nice, slide-in, so the hard drive just snaps into place like a hot swap external drive. The brix on the other hand uses a proprietary SATA connector which feels flimsy and must be jimmied into place.

BRIX of the latest gen use MSATA versus the more recent M.2 standard that the NUCs use. Its not a big deal either way but I prefer to use the latest standard.

The big thing for me is the CPUs that these units use. If you look at the BRIX line compared to the NUCs, you will notice that similar systems use slightly different model CPUs. Notice that an i7 brix will use a different CPU than an i7 NUC. The NUC's i7 is actually a better proc than the one BRIX uses. Its not a huge difference, but when you compare both units and them being a similar price point, the NUC wins out. Its like Intel saved the better procs for their own units :)

1 out of 5 eggsThis PC died on me, and this is a common problem

This review is from: Intel NUC (Next Unit of Computing) BOXNUC5I7RYH 2 x 204Pin SO-DIMM Intel Iris Graphics 6100 Aluminum and Plastic Black NUC Kit (Rock Canyon)

Pros: Ultra small and quiet, high performance for such a tiny size

Cons: It seems the Intel NUC PCs are just poorly-made or badly-designed or both. Search Google for Intel NUC won't turn on and you will find over 117,000 results.

My particular NUC died over just over a month of use. It won't turn on at all, and now I'm stuck with a paperweight that is out of warranty.

Other Thoughts: Buy something else.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic Server

This review is from: Intel NUC (Next Unit of Computing) BOXNUC5I7RYH 2 x 204Pin SO-DIMM Intel Iris Graphics 6100 Aluminum and Plastic Black NUC Kit (Rock Canyon)

Pros: I bought this as a cheap power efficient server to replace a loud 1U in my closet. I've been running Xenserver on it since day 1 and it's been amazing. Zero performance issues, even running 4 VM's under decent load. Super cool and no noise.
It's currently hosting my steam servers for my friends and the performance is higher than the official servers we used to play on.
I have been running out of hard drive space with the 120GB m2 card I installed. Just ordered a 2TB hdd to fix that issue. That's one more reason I chose this model, the ability to have 2 internal storage devices.

Cons: It uses a mini-hdmi connector and that wasn't mentioned in the newegg spec. Took an additional day to get up and running because I needed to buy an adapter.

Other Thoughts: 30W peak power consumption makes my wallet happy. Probably going to buy another unit.

1 out of 5 eggsToo many issues to warrant buying

This review is from: Intel NUC (Next Unit of Computing) BOXNUC5I7RYH 2 x 204Pin SO-DIMM Intel Iris Graphics 6100 Aluminum and Plastic Black NUC Kit (Rock Canyon)

Pros: Its a nice size and is pretty solid

Cons: IR does not work, bios access issues, really serious boot issues where it just won't pick up the boot device, strangely dependant on what TV or monitor its plugged into to actually work. Check the forums and you will see many people with these sorts of issues. I would run a mile, I return my device after 24 hrs of frustration and I've been building servers and desktops for 20 years.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect HTPC

This review is from: Intel NUC (Next Unit of Computing) BOXNUC5I7RYH 2 x 204Pin SO-DIMM Intel Iris Graphics 6100 Aluminum and Plastic Black NUC Kit (Rock Canyon)

Pros: Small form factor, easy installation, and excellent BIOS functionality. Excellent power for the size and heat. I find the fan is never noticeable in ambient environment sounds, and even less when used in conjunction with home theater. SSD fits in the cover perfectly, no additional screws required. The m.2 slot is a nice feature as well. Fantastic power usage. I imagine it will only get better as I tweak the power features of the system.

Cons: I had to use a later version of Ubuntu because drivers are not yet available for the Iris as of 07/12/2015. You need to get the fastest 1866 ram you can find. It is worth the small difference in price, but should still be noted. I would not recommend using a traditional platter based drive in the cover.

Other Thoughts: As the device is available for longer, driver support in Linux distributions will become more common and thus an even easier setup for a novice user. I would not hesitate to recommend this product to anyone looking to do HTPC, home compute, or even very light gaming.

Pros: Tiny form factor, super quiet, does it all.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: If you don't need a discrete graphics card, this tiny beast is perfect!
