4 out of 5 eggsGreat Tower PC Replacement

Pros: I've been toying with replacing my Core 2 Q6600 Quad-Core for years for something smaller and quieter, this; one finally fit the bill to justify the replacement. Both faster and much quieter.

Cons: I would have given 5 eggs but video driver still needs improvement (crashes playing DVDs using ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre 6). I once had purchase an Intel MOBO before (for the Q6600 mentioned above - switched to ASUS), very robust, but took a year to improve the drivers, expect the same. I did return NUC once for replacement, and given I only had to troubleshoot with a stick HD and two sticks of RAM, I was happy to figure out that the hardware worked fine. It was a standard WINTEL issue, I had turned off Wifi/Bluetooth from the BIOS, Win10 did not like it and would reboot with no warning after 5-7 minutes, no issues after reboot until left off far a period of time. After reading into some online threads, I determined that I should try leaving both wifi and Bluetooth on within the BIOS and disable inside windows. Worked great since. Microsoft found yet another way to take more time from my life (a year and counting, that's being generous).

Other Thoughts: Installed in Intel NUC 6i5syk
-G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 32GB (2 x 16G) 260-Pin DDR4 SO-DIMM DDR4 2133
-SAMSUNG 950 PRO M.2 512GB PCI-Express 3.0 x4
-Win10 Pro

1 out of 5 eggsWould not purchase again

Pros: Bought for a client build. This thing was really nice. The compact size was a huge convenience and the SSD capability made the thing lightning fast and very pleasurable to use. The thing had a surprising number of nice power user features, such as a high-current USB port, four USB 3.0 ports, two digital display-outs, internal SATA data and power headers if they were needed, internal USB 2.0 headers if needed, an HDMI CEC header. And the whole thing was so small and standard that you could take it apart in 2 minutes with a regular and a jeweller's screwdriver. Unfortunately...

Cons: After 2 months, I can't keep it turned on more than 5 minutes without blue screens. A web search shows me other people are having the exact same problem. I'm not diagnosing and fixing the problem because my client needs high reliability with minimal downtime and I am not giving this thing a second chance at the risk of my reputation. I'll be doing my best to get my money back from Intel.

1 out of 5 eggsGood HTPC replacement with immature drivers

Pros: - Small
- Quiet
- Easy installation of memory & drive (4 screws and bob's your uncle)
- Blazingly fast bootup with the right drive

Cons: - A bit on the ugly side if you want to show it off in your stereo cabinet
- Would love to see an all black setup
- Video drivers need work

Other Thoughts: I bought this to replace my 3 year old AMD A10-5800k home theater setup. The AMD system is big. It was being used as a Windows Media Center with 6-channel DVR capability. With Microsoft abandoning that, I ultimately went back to a TiVO for the DVR and only used the PC for movie playback from my Synology RAID system. I switched from MyMovies/Total Home Theater to Plex and really enjoy the Plex setup. So, I figured it was a good time to upgrade hardware while shrinking real estate. As I state in the pros, installation of memory and M.2 was easy. Windows 10 install is simple, but basic drivers like LAN and graphics are not built into the Windows 10 install. I downloaded all necessary drivers from Intel website and had no issues with installation.

Plex setup, on the other hand, was frustrating at best. I wanted full HD audio format playback and switching screen rates (60p/24p) to be as simple and automatic like it was on the AMD. After much internet and forum help from Intel, AVS and Plex, I was able to get just about everything to work. When I start a movie and Plex switches to 24p, the movie plays slow or stutters. A simple hit of the pause and playback or jumping ahead and then jumping back a chapter fixes that. Never had that problem on the AMD system. I'm attributing that to driver immaturity and hope that it gets fixed.

I got the SAMSUNG 950 PRO M.2 256GB PCI-Express 3.0 x4 Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-V5P256BW for this box and bootup times are phenomenal. After BIOS post, the bootup is less than 5 seconds, really about 2 seconds. So fast, in fact, my network drive connect always reports back as failed.

Since Skylake is relatively new, I'll give Intel a few more months to get graphics drivers better before I give this a 5-star. Aside from that, I'm real happy with it.

Edit 2016-01-25 - Grammar fixes

Edit 2016-02-19 - Don't know what's happening, but this box is getting worse. Don't know if it's the driver updates or Windows updates, but I'm getting more disappointed in this box. I keep getting the new Windows blue screen with the big sad face emoji.

Edit 2016-02-23
I'm downgrading to 1 egg until Intel gets their act together. This thread: https://communities.intel.com/thread/96821?tstart=0 and several others is growing, and Intel's response is awful ("look through a bunch of threads to figure out your problem"). In all the years (over 20) of building and working with PCs, I haven't had problems like this. Will have to see about returning this.

2 out of 5 eggsGave up after the THIRD return

Pros: - Makes a great HTPC / HyperV Server. With 32GB RAM, there is nothing that compares.

Cons: - They keep dying! Every unit worked fine, initially. Then, between a few days and a few weeks, I had three different units die for different reasons, all hardware failure. I've spend over a day troubleshooting on three different occasions.

Other Thoughts: I love these little things, but I can't afford any more down time or risk having one die after the Newegg return window. Once Intel catches on and fixes the issues, I plan on buying another. For now, I'll use my gaming PC as my HTPC and pay the extra power bill.

1 out of 5 eggsNot compatible with Linux

Pros: Pretty, small.

Cons: Bought this because Intel advertises "OS Compatibility: [...] Linux Mint [...]".

It was a bear to get Mint installed, and after that was finally accomplished, the machine crashes like crazy. I get about 5-10 minutes of uptime, and then a hard crash (everything freezes, no response to keyboard, mouse, or network pings).

Tried kernel versions 3.19.0 (current for mint 17.3), 4.2.0, 4.3.3, 4.4.0 (all from mint, ubuntu, or debian builds). All crash heavily (and 3.19 could not see bt/wifi chip).

I believe the problem to be with the video driver. Often there is no evidence of the crash outside of a handful of null chars in /var/log/syslog (after rebooting), but sometimes there are errors around video interactions, and suggestions to file a bug report to bugs.freedesktop.org

So, if you would like to run some linux on this thing, I suggest waiting a year or so, until Intel gets useable drivers into the kernel source, and Mint (or ubuntu or whoever) figures out how to compile them into a working kernel.

Other Thoughts: Looks like many people are having troubles with this thing freezing and crashing. See this thread on the official NUC forum:
