4 out of 5 eggsFirst unit worked three weeks and died

Pros: Powerful unit, really awesome specs for such a small device.
Compatible with OpenELEC appliance OS for HTPC usage (with KODI)
Built in M.2 port, IR, DisplayPort, and USB 3.0

Cons: BIOS has a bad history so far. (Still has problems with current 033)
My first unit blew up pretty hardcore a few weeks after I got it.
Memory compatibility issues.
Updating the BIOS can be a nightmare.
Standard 2.5" slot is very difficult to remove a drive out of.

Other Thoughts: After tinkering with this unit for a few weeks and getting OpenELEC running smoothly on it, the unit decided to blow up. I was notified it has bit the bullet because for some reason it started dumping massive voltage into the managed network switch it was hooked to, and that switch threw health alarms all over my network. After powering it odwn manually, the unit would no longer come back online, only showing a solid blue light on the front but no video output, no BIOS post screen, no HDD activity. Intel confirmed the unit was toast and requested I initiate an RMA through NewEgg.

The RMA was initially for a replacement, but I was told it takes 10 days AFTER the bad unit is received to even start shipping the replacement, which is insane. However, NewEgg support allowed me to swap it to a refund and float the $400 to buy another unit now and overnight it, and offered to refund me the shipping costs. I'm still going to be out nearly $400 for weeks until they refund the defective unit.

These units are fantastic when they work properly. If I didn't realize how great they were I'd probably not bother to risk replacing it with a second unit.

UPDATE 4/2016! Replacement unit has been working fine with latest BIOS. Adding back an egg!

4 out of 5 eggsNew Gen 6 NUC but not as reliable as the 5 series

Pros: The unit is still a great alternative to office pc. Very fast with M.2 or regular 2.5 SSD.

Cons: The bios out of the box was version 28. The unit initially booted then became a brick after saving minor bios changes. No boot. No Video, No Bios splash screen. So I though it was done. I have Kingston Hyperx 2133 DDR4 modules in it and a Crucial 500gb m.2 too. I booted the unit and set the time and date, and enabled the features I wanted on the unit then saved the changes and restated it and the NUC would not post after any of the bios changes.
Since intel has been having bios issues with this model they said not to use the USB recovery method with the .bio file on a flash drive. I believe they stated this with the .33 version and the .36 version. So I used the .39 bio file opened the unit back up and moved the jumper to recovery and recovered the bios with the .39 file and everything now works. I have not had any issue with any NUC prior to these Gen 6 units. I have built 50 plus gen 5 units that never had any bios issue's. This is really a step back as far as I am concerned. The verdict is out if this device rushed to quickly to distribution. Only time will tell.
I am watching this unit like a hawk to make sure it will be stable to use for my customers.

Other Thoughts: Be careful on which m.2 drive you buy the crucial MX 200 2260 is to short. It will not work I had to use a support bracket to use it. Should have looked at the specs. The older gen 5's used the 2260's just fine. My BAD.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great!!!

Pros: - Compact with good thermal design, the fan is not loud at all, unlike Gigabyte brix, which is super loud.
- Iris 540, which I feel is much more better than HD 520. Can play games with high quality.
- 2 slots without any price added

Cons: - the bundle has a incompatible RAM.

2 out of 5 eggsDo not buy the bundle with RAM

Pros: The NUC itself is great, the Avexir RAM bundled with it is not. Do not buy the bundle and buy different RAM instead.

Cons: The bundled RAM, Avexir 8gb is NOT compatible with the NUC and will result in a number of errors including, but not limited to random BSOD, OS installation problems, and crashing.

Other Thoughts: I would recommend the NUC, but no the Newegg bundle.

2 out of 5 eggsFrustrating Experience

Pros: Really nice balance of power efficiency, small space, decent CPU. The M.2 SSD slot is awesome, and Newegg bundled it with free RAM.

Cons: I've spent (wasted?) a rare free day trying to get this thing to even complete an installation of Ubuntu (tried 15.10 and a beta of 16.04). There are random crashes and kernel panics during installation or shortly thereafter, even with X graphics stopped. Finally I have tracked down complaints of a 'WHEA' issue (named after the BSOD Windows users see). Seems to be something to do with power management and overheating, perhaps. Lots of people on the Intel forums have had their units replaced, swapped in the same RAM / M.2. SSD / keyboard dongles and found the problem has gone away. Two BIOS updates later (the 'latest' one is pointing at v036 but the forums recommend v039 which is actually the latest) and I'm hoping various memory and/or power settings can get the thing working.

I wanted to pay for a known brand to avoid this waste of time. Not sure if Intel can be that brand for me in the future.

Other Thoughts: Don't buy this until the issues are resolved. The bundled RAM from Newegg was Hynix-based which seems to be related to the issues. Otherwise it could be a nice product.

3 out of 5 eggsSkylake NUC

Pros: Small and powerful

Cons: Very picky with memory. The memory supplied with the bundle WILL NOT WORK.
Avexir 8GB 260-Pin DDR4 SO-DIMM DDR4 2133 (PC4 17060) Laptop Memory Model AVD4SZ121331508G-1B
Had to buy Kingston memory.

Other Thoughts: After about 5 hours of trying to install an operating system, I was going to rma the whole bundle. I did some research and found Kingston Technology HyperX Impact 16GB Kit (2 x 8GB) 2400MHz DDR4 CL14 SODIMM Laptop Memory HX424S14IBK2/16 was compatible. Installed and it worked perfectly. Installed windows. Runs very quickly and quietly.

2 out of 5 eggsGreat Specs, Poor Quality

Pros: When it runs, it runs well.

Cons: I RMA'd the first one because it was DOA, memory error. I couldn't troubleshoot without a spare stick of DDR4, but based on the 100% positive RAM reviews and negative NUC reviews I'm assuming it was the NUC. The replacement booted up and functioned just fine. The first thing I did was upgrade the BIOS to 0036 (0039 is apparently bad) so I didn't experience the missing SSD problem. I installed Windows, Chrome, NextPVR, and VLC. A few days later, while using VLC, I get a BSOD. When I reboot it tells me there is no boot device. I try a Windows install thumbdrive, and a Windows Install DVD via USB drive. The BIOS can't see any of it, even when reset to default settings. Clearly a hardware or firmware failure. The next day it booted from the SSD like nothing happened.

I am using clonezilla to back up the OS and programs, and making sure any files are on the 2.5" drive where I can access them after a boot failure. I can't let the backup of this one slide because I expect it to fail again any day. In a variety of other computers, EaseUS and the Windows Recovery Disk couldn't boot or recover my files. I'll have to wait for Intel to get their manufacturing back up to snuff before I try to return it, otherwise it's a waste of time exchanging one bad computer for another... again.

Newegg's 30 day return policy doesn't reset when you return a part for a replacement, so my week old computer was considered past the return date.

Other Thoughts: Don't make the same mistakes I did. Don't buy this computer because of the (now) bad reviews. If you return something, actually return it. If you want, buy a replacement and don't wait a week and a half for the return process and a then-defunct return policy.

2 out of 5 eggsA Beta product at best

Pros: After three days of troubleshooting I'm prepared to say there is nothing really wrong with this NUC. The main problem is that the memory they are bundling is incompatible. It will not work reliably no matter what you do. If you buy this product then order some memory at the same time that does not use the Hynix 2133 memory modules. If you don't then you will only face frustration and disappointment. The USB 3 problems are vexing but solvable with some research on the Intel forums for this NUC. I suggest you check them before you buy. Right now I will say this is not a product for novices. Partially the fault has to fall on Intel for releasing a product before it was ready.
That said I think that when it is working this will be a nice little device. It’s well made and not at all low end looking. When I get the problems ironed out, if I do, then I think I’ll be happy with it. I wish I had more good to contribute but right now all I have is a big basket of bad.

Cons: This is at best a beta level product or at worst an alpha. There are so many different issues that I recommend nobody that isn’t a computer guru stay away until Intel works out those issues. Let me try and enumerate them. First apparently memory with Hynix 2133 modules doesn’t play nice with the NUC at older BIOSes. It causes it to Blue Screen randomly. And to compound that what does NewEgg do but bundle a memory stick with those very modules. Apparently BIOS 036 has a memory setting called ‘round trip latency optimization’ that you deselect and it supposedly fixes that. Of course that doesn’t help if the memory fails while you’re trying to update the BIOS and bricks the unit.
Then there’s the USB 3 problem. This particular NUC only has native Intel USB 3 so if you try to install Windows 7 using a USB key then you’re out of luck. I lucked out when I looked at a story on Anand Tech that led me to an Intel NUC discussion page where I learned how to use DISM GUI to add the USB 3 drivers to the USB 3 key I had Windows 7 Ultimate X64 installed on. I will admit it was daunting for me and probably even more so for a newbie. But there were good step by step instructions. It worked and the NUC saw and installed Win 7 with the USB 3 drivers. I even added the Samsung 950 Pro drivers so it worked and started the first time. I will say this with the caveat that perhaps the NUC I received had a newer BIOS or had the firmware changed. I don’t know. I do know it probably wouldn’t work for someone who buys this NUC kit cold and doesn’t have another computer to modify Windows 7. Maybe the best thing for them to do is buy Windows 10. Of course the memory problem effects both Windows 7 & Windows 10.
And finally there appears to be a problem with the Intel video driver that causes crashing. Apparently Intel Iris 540 version 4352 works. I’m downloading them right now after a fun filled day of blue screens and researching the various problems on the Web. To be honest I consider myself a fairly experienced computer guru and I’d gladly box this thing up and send it back if I could. I’m nobody’s beta tester and I would think Intel would know better than to release such a buggy product.
I’m going to say this again because it bears repeating; do not purchase this particular NUC unless you know your way around troubleshooting. Do not buy it if it will be your only computer. Do not buy it unless you have no problem with being a beta tester for Intel. If you have to have it then wait until Intel works out the problems and buy some proper memory so you don’t brick it during the BIOS update because the memory failed.
Right now I’m being plagued with excessive boot times. The BIOS comes up fast enough but then it takes about 30 seconds to get the ‘Windows is Starting’ logo and then another 30 to get to the flying windows part of the logo. Then it starts up quickly enough. I know how speedy the Samsung 950 Pro is so it has to be something else. To be honest this is a minor problem among all the others and I’m not sure if it can be remedied. But it does bear inclusion.
One final small ergonomic problem that pales by comparison to the others is why in the world did Intel decide to put the audio jack on the front? OK, maybe it’s meant as an earphone jack but why not put another on the back?

Other Thoughts: I have spent all day troubleshooting this thing. If it was my only computer then I’d have thrown it across the room by now. Luckily I have another computer to access the Internet. Trust me, Google is your best friend in cases like this. The threads at Intel about the problems on this NUC are goldmines of information and I also got a lot of information from the Anand Tech story. Right now it’s working but who knows what will happen next. I’m probably going to have to buy some different memory. And I can’t help but wonder if the ill will I’m feeling toward Intel right now is worth it?
