1 out of 5 eggsFailed after 40 days

This review is from: Intel NUC6i3SYH Kit with 6th Generation Intel Core i3 Processor

Pros: Great functionality when it works

Cons: Failed after 40 days going into a WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR loop which indicates hardware failure. Seems common from reading intel support forum.

3 out of 5 eggsA little difficult to get going, but worth the effort

This review is from: Intel NUC6i3SYH Kit with 6th Generation Intel Core i3 Processor

Pros: - As with this line, the NUC is small, and well thought out.
- It's fast and quiet - Perfect for HTPC.

Cons: - The Skylake Architecture is so new, there are a few Linux distributions that will drive the hardware, especially the Network / Wireless and Video. In most cases (3/30/16), you'll need to upgrade your Kernel to greater than 4.3.X.
- The bundled memory - don't buy. I got Kingston HyperX memory, but that did not fix my issue (read below).
- 4K? Well, yes and no. Technically yes, but with the HDMI 1.4b, you'll only get 30FPS, not the 60FPS that is required to play 4k video. The display port is fine. You can buy a Mini-DP to HDMI 2.0 cable for $40, and that should resolve the issue.
- Bios Issues - Resolved (see below).
- Issue when booting CD off USB after OS is installed. Just keeps power cycling. USB Flash seems fine.

Other Thoughts: I bought the bundled memory, but could only get it to boot 1/10 of the time. Replaced with the Kingston and same thing. I wound up:
1. Power off and unplug power.
2. Take out the Bios Jumper on the inside.
3. Download the latest BIOS from Intel, extract, put .BIO file on USB FLash, in the root.
4. Plug in USB Flash and hold the power down for 4 seconds (very tricky, 5 seconds will turn off the NUC).
5. Update BIOS when NUC posts, F7. It might take you a few (many) tries to get this to work.
6. Power Off after update completes.
7. Plug Jumper back in.
8. Power on and you should be good to go.
(this took me 1/2 a day to get right, be patient.)

Kodibuntu - no 4.3.X kernel in initial install, so upgrade the kernel using .deb packages following guides on-line for Ubuntu. After this, Kodi would load, but the performance was terrible. Updated the OS, still slow. Installed the OIBAF repository and updated all my Mesa / DRI / Graphics card drivers.

Now system is spot on, and am very happy with the performance.

1 out of 5 eggsCannot install Windows 7 or Windows 10 on this thing

This review is from: Intel NUC6i3SYH Kit with 6th Generation Intel Core i3 Processor

Pros: Small size and 'potential"

Cons: Error screens and BSOD despite BIOS upgrades, settings changes, memory changes and disk changes. I've come to the conclusion that it is the NUC HW.

Other Thoughts: I've owned two earlier generation NUCs--I'm predisposed to love'em, but I'm inclined to think this is one to avoid. I'd be willing to try another unit, but not sure after reading horror stories on this and Intel forums...

1 out of 5 eggsStill trying to get it to work

This review is from: Intel NUC6i3SYH Kit with 6th Generation Intel Core i3 Processor

Pros: It's small and quiet.

Cons: Looks like the bundle I got with this had incompatible memory. Thanks for wasting my time. Would have purchased it some where else. No weary of all newegg bundles.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat with Kingston memory (was: Dud)

This review is from: Intel NUC6i3SYH Kit with 6th Generation Intel Core i3 Processor

Pros: Small compact size, both M2 SSD slot and 2.5" SATA slot which I liked. Easy to take apart and assemble. Solid build.

Cons: (Update 3/25/2016)
I returned the old kit with Avexir memory, and ordered the kit with Kingston memory. I noticed many reviews complaining about Avexir on newegg, and the Intel web site just updated users reported Kingston is good.

The new kit arrived actually with a free stick of Avexir as well, I assume Newegg was just throwing them away. As experiment, I tried Avexir again, and got the same errors as before. Then I installed Kingston, everything was good. No issue at all.

Upgrade from 1 egg to 5 eggs. Refund was easy and prompt.

(old review:)
Ordered the bundle with Avexir 8GB memory plus a separate OCZ Trion 150 120GB SSD. A ton of different errors and blue screens during install when I tried both Win8 and Win10. Tried at least 15 times. "IRQ not less or equal", "page fault in nonpage area", "critical structure corruption", "0xc0000005 error", etc. Just not usable. Giving up, will get a refund.
Not sure if it is the memory or the actual PC, most likely not the SSD.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Media Streaming PC

This review is from: Intel NUC6i3SYH Kit with 6th Generation Intel Core i3 Processor

Pros: - Very small and low profile. I put it in my closet.
- Very fast, good specs at a very reasonable price
- I installed Ubuntu Linux on this thing without any issues. Intel is known for great Linux support and it shows
- USB 3.0, 1 Gbit Ethernet, and AC wireless adapter make this tiny PC a great media device. I'm running Plex on it and is able to transcode 1080p video without any issues.
- Very easy to upgrade components and connect additional peripherals.

Cons: - Can't get it to connect to the internet from the BIOS, so it seems updating from the BIOS is out of the question. I'm hoping this will be fix in the next BIOS update.

Other Thoughts: - For the price and specs, you can hardly do better.

4 out of 5 eggsUpdated 5 star due to finally working. customers were pleased but mad it took so long, and a big hassle, now learn from our reviews.

This review is from: Intel NUC6i3SYH Kit with 6th Generation Intel Core i3 Processor

Pros: "Intel" suppose to be best in the industry. 4" x 4" x 2" dimensions. hdmi and display port great for home media. skylake. .usb 3.0, intel hd 520 graphics.

Cons: When I purchased I looked for a QVL for the ram. None was found. I assumed newegg would give me ram that would work, I guess it was more of a participation medal that you bought it. Like good job you twit. here's some ram for your trouble that don't work. Ok. one was DOA. It gave me a post once and black screened. no bios upgrade was even attempted. Blue power light did not work at all. I went with samsung 850 evo ssd's . Installing ssd's into the provided ssd adapter cage, takes an act of congress, it's not fluid you have to literally push down while sliding so the mounting holes will line up correctly. that feels forceful to me. newegg did great on the return and shipping me a replacement promptly. the "gift" Avexir memory is not working with this unit. I contacted support and told them please update and change this as you will have plenty others with the same issue. After the QVL came out Kingston Hyper X was not on the qualified list. so, everyone was saying the 8gb or 4gb worked. i chose the 8gb had hynix chips on the module. fine . first boot up. no problems no faults, no erros, no memory management nothing. windows installed flawlessly. updates drivers everything took around 37 minutes to complete installation and updating. I did check the heatsink and smelled for electrical burn smells on the DOA, however there was no smell and the only thing i can think of is there is some kind of short or grounding issue causing problems, as the blue power light not working and no video and nothing but the fan. flash update for corrupted bios didn't work as well.

Other Thoughts: intel shouldn't rely on their customers to fix their issues and find out what's wrong. Yes it is good to have forums, where I found most of the problems I had, but if you put out a good product you wouldn't have the issues in the first place. I did notice 2 things, now thermal paste is suppose to spread, but, the amount of thermal paste on these units are ridiculous like a kid fingerpainting globs on a piece of paper, to the point where it's not effective. due to modern processor normal operating temperature works within the threshold and auto shuts off if it is too hot. i turned the fan speed up in the bios to 65%. and I noticed an area within the bios to change and manage your memory settings. I was too busy and spent the majority of my time on these systems, I have a theory and it's just curiosity if you were to install the Avexir memory, and use the settings of the hyperX or another working ram module. would this help the people who received the Avexir memory. Although I wouldn't trust it because i tried to alter the settings anyway but no stable outcome.. anyone got 3 hours of braveness?

5 out of 5 eggsGreat bang for the buck

This review is from: Intel NUC6i3SYH Kit with 6th Generation Intel Core i3 Processor

Pros: Small. And I mean ** small **. It's about the size of a paper napkin and a few inches high. Silent. Easy to get going even if you don't download the drivers beforehand. I am really impressed at how fast this processor is when using an SSD; much faster than I expected.

Cons: None that I see. I strongly recommend using an external USB DVD drive if you're not familiar with creating a bootable Windows install USB drive to load Windows.

Other Thoughts: When I put this together, I checked with the Intel website for recommended RAM to use. I purchased two O8GX4M2A2133C15 modules and installed them and an SSD. Viola! It booted right into BIOS. I loaded Windows 8 from a USB stick in about two minutes and was off and running. Some time later, my free Windows 10 download was installed and I was very pleased. Once you can connect to a network, you can download and install a program from Intel that will automatically check for other drivers you need. Also, the BIOS needed updating, and that turned out to be very easy.

To get Windows 10 for free you need to have Win 7 or 8.1 installed. I tried to load Win 7 and as a previous reviewer stated, once the install screen was displayed I had no mouse or keyboard, even when cabled. So I don't recommend trying to use Win 7.

Overall I can't say anything bad about this. If you use RAM recommended by Intel I don't think you would have any problem. I debated whether to purchase the i3 or the i5 machine and I really think the i3 would suit 75% of users. It's plenty fast enough for my purposes.

3 out of 5 eggsRan windows 7 & windows 10

This review is from: Intel NUC6i3SYH Kit with 6th Generation Intel Core i3 Processor

Pros: Love the SD card slot

Cons: Does not work with the free 8GB Avexir SODIMM. Had to pick up some Crosair CMSX8GX4M2A2400C16 locally and works great afterward.

Bought 2x units,
1 unit has some mechanical tolerance issues between one of the shoulder mounting screws, bottom 2.5" HDD carrier/cover , and the top PCB/sheet metal assembly. Returned 1 unit.

Other Thoughts: Does not use the free 8GB Avexir SODIMM with the 6th Gen NUC.

The power LED indicator is no longer on the power switch itself like the previous 2 generations of NUC.

3 out of 5 eggsRAM Issues

This review is from: Intel NUC6i3SYH Kit with 6th Generation Intel Core i3 Processor

Pros: Works fine so far after switching to different RAM.

Cons: Did not work with bundled Avexir DDR4 RAM. Had to switch to Kingston HyperX. There appear to be several on-going issues with the NUC6. Google "Intel NUC forum" for details.
