5 out of 5 eggsnice firewall

Pros: Running Untangle as a gateway/firewall- runs nice, a little slow to load. As everyone has said use low density ram. Built this firewall as a demo for clients and its on my home network now with 9 servers/desktops and 3 NAS's and it runs flawlessly. The VIA cpu is a little weak and i'd only use this as a desktop if i was going to run a lite linux distro. I'm putting it through a "test" right now and so far so good and its handling everything i send it.

Cons: I was hoping the VIA chip would have a little bit more horsepower- maybe the same setup with a duel core atom with 2 nics- now thats what i want.

Other Thoughts: If you know how to config a network, get this box and use Untangle or Clark Connect and for about 200 bucks you'll have a setup that rivals a 600 sonicwall firewall/router....nice

1 out of 5 eggsFrustrated

Pros: None! Well, the box looks great...

Cons: This was the 3rd box I received in as many weeks, ended up working with Jetway to no avail. RMA'd for refund!

Other Thoughts: Guess I'm just lucky, really like the look of this box. Third time wasn't the charm...I give up on this model!
Believe the packaging of this product is problematic...but, other reviews are positive?

1 out of 5 eggsIt happens...

Pros: Appreciate the size of this box and the fact it has (2) 1 GB NIC's.

Cons: DOA, would not even boot into the BIOS...nothing?

Other Thoughts: Should be better packaged. RMA'd

5 out of 5 eggsGreat gateway/firewall machine

Pros: Dual gigabit ethernet
Great linux driver support out of the box.
Low power consumption
Setup was very painless

Cons: No room for anything in the PCI slot
Doesn't like high-density RAM
Optical drive bay needs a slimline drive with no risers or any height-extending protrusions of any kind.

Other Thoughts: Video isn't good for gaming, CAD, or the like, but that's not what you'd buy this kind of machine for. It makes a perfect firewall machine for your average home connection.

I've had it running for about three days now and the new machine is performing flawlessly. We'll see how it holds up in another six months.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Gateway Machine

Pros: I purchased this to use with Clark Connect. I installed a 1.5TB hard drive to store backups on.
I like that this already has two network adapters and the size is small.

Cons: I had trouble getting the device to power on. I contacted Jetway support and was told this device requires low density memory. I wrote back asking for more details, and was told that low density memory has chips on both sides of the memory module. I went to three different local stores before finding a low density 1GB module at F r y 's in Austin. Now it works like a charm.

Other Thoughts: It would be nice if they included a wall mount bracket too.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat computer

Pros: great system, not really that loud. used as a gateway/firewall running clark connect. doesnt slow down my network at all. has only cut of on me once when i was asleep, but i think that was b/c of a power failure due to a thunder storm. hasnt done it since. overall great computer for linux based firewalls.

Cons: fans are noticeable when nothing else is on in my room. definitely NOT the loudest fans out there though.

5 out of 5 eggs2 Lan Connections

Pros: The Newegg specs say 1 RJ45 network interface, but it has two. This is good, since I was expecting it to come with only one and planning to add another in the PCI slot. That wouldn't have worked (see below). I was able to install Ubuntu without involving a CD drive, using PXE from another Ubuntu box. So far it looks fine.

Cons: That single PCI slot isn't good for much. There's low overhead clearance not just from the case but from short cables running across the top of it. And there's no space on the back to expose anything on the PCI card.

Other Thoughts: Getting the PXE install to work required setting the BIOS for Legacy Lan as the first boot device, turning off one of the NICs (under Integrated Devices), and turning on the boot option under the other one. Once that was done it ran smoothly - although it took a fair amount of time to download OS components. The fans are quieter than a larger system's, maybe by half. For a media server it might be a bit loud. For my uses (rsnapshot backups of a couple of servers, and a hot spare for them) it's nice that it's as small and quiet as it is, not to mention energy-sipping.
