3 out of 5 eggsnice but runs too hot

Pros: nice package very small, runs pfsense beta snapshot.

Cons: CF useless, you'd have to cut a hole in the case to have CF in place, doable but WTH? Idles at 79c. Just too hot. Good news is putting a fan on knocks it down to 59c, but you buy for the package...

Other Thoughts: RMAed. The atom version has a correctly oriented CFast slot, will see if that runs cooler.

2 out of 5 eggsInsanely Hot

Pros: Really small, awesome form factor. Built in Wi-Fi, Dual Lan.. would make a perfect little router if it was about 30 degrees C cooler.

Cons: This computer is HOT. I'm talking 83-85 degrees at all times. It really needs a fan. I wonder if the Intel one is this way? I got the AMD because of 64 bit support and better graphics, but the heat is just unbelievable. I would not feel comfortable giving this device to a customer because of how dangerously hot it is at all times.

Other Thoughts: I really want to love this PC... form factor is awesome, price is awesome, just way too darn hot, so much so that it trumps everything. Probably going to return this.

3 out of 5 eggsVery small, well built, silient but runs a bit hot

Pros: Tiny - barely larger than a 3.5" disk. It says "mini-ITX" on the box, but it's much smaller than mini-ITX.
Low power - 21W max, and idles as low as 15W. Dual core, with reasonable graphics power.
Yet, it has mini PCI-e slot, CF, 2.5" disk.
Two gigabit ethernet, good for a firewall device.
It has no fan at all, so silent.

Cons: CF slot is not useable or accessible. The case blocks it. Only way to use it to modify the case. Reset button is present on the motherboard but not on the case.
The biggest issue is the heatsink/case temp. CPU runs around 75C even at idle, 80C load. If you set 85C for shutdown, there aren't much room left.
Obviously, you don't want to touch the case while it's up. To remedy the situation, you can put a fan, or laptop cooler. Then, what's the point of "silent" design.
The harddisk (a SSD) reports the temp as 53-54C. It gets pretty warm.
WIFI has single antenna, so limited to 150.

Other Thoughts: I'm using it as a Ubuntu machine (well, terminal server) and it can drive 1920x1200 monitor without problem. (AMD fglrx driver.) I took a star off for CF slot not usable (spec says it has) and another star for case temp being too high.
The unit could be better (a) opening for CF slot access. (b) USB ports in front (it can do 7 USB but only 4 is useable). 2 in front would be great. (c) Reset button (d) A little more engineering to lower the case temp.
I understand it's not easy to use the case as heatsink and keep the CPU low, but making disk temp that high is not a great design.
I've used every trick on the book to make the CPU temp low (such as lowering CPU core voltage), but the case temp remains pretty high. I might glue on a fan to the shell to cool it at some point.
But, if you want a compact, silent desktop and you don't need a lot of CPU power, this is a good choice. Just don't touch it while it's powered on.
