1 out of 5 eggsGreat idea, poor execution, poor support

Pros: Form factor
Feature set

Cons: Non-maskable interrupts (NMI) without explanation

Other Thoughts: I contacted Jetway, but they have stopped responding to me, and I have not been able to get a resolution so I will be forced to return the product.

I was attempting to run Debian Linux (jessie, kernel 3.14.7) on it as a firewall. When the machine is under load, the kernel spits out the following messages periodically:

[ 113.202218] Uhhuh. NMI received for unknown reason 2d on CPU 0.
[ 113.202218] Do you have a strange power saving mode enabled?
[ 113.202218] Dazed and confused, but trying to continue
[ 124.517038] Uhhuh. NMI received for unknown reason 3d on CPU 0.
[ 124.517038] Do you have a strange power saving mode enabled?
[ 124.517038] Dazed and confused, but trying to continue
[ 159.657889] Uhhuh. NMI received for unknown reason 3d on CPU 0.
[ 159.657946] Do you have a strange power saving mode enabled?

While I can find references to these messages in Google, there is nothing that appears directly related to this problem. (Presumably) the same problem halts memtest86+ completely within a minute of it starting.

I have mostly ruled-out RAM as a problem by testing a different module and getting the same result. It doesn't appear to be overheating (although the only sensors I have access to are for the CPU, and those are reading at most 32°C). (Note for other reviewers: "hot to the touch" is not a way to judge whether a system is within spec or not.)

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer,

We are sorry about the problem you have got. Please do contact us to solve the issue. We need more info regarding to the Linus system you are using to better help you. Apologize about the inconvenience.

Regards,
Jetway Computer

4 out of 5 eggsGreat computer...with possible solution to overheating issue some people have reported

Pros: Small design, four ethernet ports, Compact Flash and two Mini PCI-e ports. Works great as a pfSense firewall router and wifi AP.

Cons: I am writing this review to address the overheating issue. When I first got the computer I also had problems with the system shutting down due to heat. I found the problem to be a small air gap between the CPU and the exterior heat sink like case. The CPU should touch the metal case so the heat can be drawn away from the CPU. I tore the PC down and applied thermal paste to the CPU. Now the temp stays between 60 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit. I have read that that is still a little hot, but at least it works now. Have had it on 24/7 for over 7 months now.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer,

Thanks for the great suggestion and your support.

1 out of 5 eggsNice design BUT a failure!

Pros: Nice small design, mountable and the 4 network ports give the device a nice advantage especially if you intend on using it as a firewall.

Cons: We bought to be used as a Linux firewall. Even when using an SSD drive on the box and having it in a climate controlled server room, the box still over heated. We replaced it and put back the original full size firewall BUT we left this JetWay device running to monitor and check how warm/hot it gets, and the son of a gun still got hot.
There is a fan connector inside the device on the board. We could use that and connect an external fan to it and just have it mounted on the size of the system. The issue is: THIS IS A FANLESS DEVICE. WHY WOULD I CONNECT A FAN TO IT?
Looks fancy and a nice attempt but it isn’t close to a final design that should be sold anywhere to the public.

1 out of 5 eggsStay away

Pros: Small and compact

Cons: Over heats. Shuts off when it over heats. This device gets very hot. I was getting temp errors from the device. I was only able to put my hand on the device for upto 6 seconds at a time. When I rebooted the device and check the PC Health it was listing the temp at 90c. I enabled CPU throttling, but this did not solve the heat problem.

Other Thoughts: I love the overall design from a physical stand point. But this device is over heating. I thought it might have been the SSD that I put in was causing just a little too much heat. So I replaced it with a DF card. Same issue. Just gets too hot and shuts off. Wish I had never wasted my money on this device.

3 out of 5 eggsGoing for Second Try

Pros: Small, 4 Ethernet ports, takes CF or SSD, inexpensive Single screw latch (like a laptop) gets you access to the CF, RAM and SSD. And the Arthos WiFi chipset should be great for building a little router on the VyOS software platform.

Cons: I think it was just the one I got. But it was scratched on the outside. And near where the screw goes in by the WiFi antenna port on the back the screw face was stripped like it was put in and tightened way too much. Also on the bottom next to that same position the screw simply fell out. (Two Damaged screws at the same corner).

Other Thoughts: The lady at NewEgg that talked to me in the RMA department, was very nice. She did explain that I had to ship the defective one back before a new one would be shipped. The only sad thing is I was so looking forward to building a little router. Yes I know that Belkin is going to have a $300 Linksys WRT54G again, but why not have a real CPU with VyOS software. So much cooler.
