5 out of 5 eggs2 Month Review

Pros: Small, lightweight media center PC. Includes decent wireless. Dedicated Nvida graphics chip really takes a load off of the already small processor allowing it to run a bit quicker. HDMI out with 6 USB connections.

Cons: Runs a bit warm. Fan is noticeable in a quiet room, but as soon as I start streaming video it gets drowned out. Packaging was badly damaged but product works fine.

Other Thoughts: Overall a solid little performer. It was exactly what I wanted for a media PC and I have not experienced any issues that others have reported. I currently have it running Windows 7 pro x64 on 4GB mushkin essentials 1066 memory and a segate 250GB laptop HDD.
After reading a few reviews I was a bit skeptical, but I am happy to say: The Hdd bracket, power adapter, VESA mount and audio adapter were all included. The BIOS gave me no issues, Windows7 drivers were easily installed, and the wireless streams movies with no problems. The cover is easily removed but you may need to look up instructions.
Some were wondering if this is fanless; No. There is a laptop-style heatsink with fan.
Overall a great ASUS product that will hopefully last a while. I would recommend to a friend.

4 out of 5 eggsUpdating BIOS

Pros: Solid performer with WIN 7 X64. Asus supplied drivers are solid. NVIDIA Graphics with the Quad Core Atom performs well for a low end machine. Used a 500g Seagate drive with 4m G.Skill DDR3-1333 So-Dimm.

Cons: I would have given 5 eggs, but after being on Asus support for over an hour with a rookie reading off a prompter, I did a search and found my own answer why my bios wouldn't update. POOR TECH SUPPORT!

Asus motherboard BIOS update error: CAP file not recognised EFI bios!

If you see the above error – and you’re selecting what you’re sure is the proper CAP file – chances are you’re trying to use a USB disk formatted to NTFS rather than FAT32. Frustratingly, the error message for a corrupt/non-CAP file is the same as the error message you get when you’re trying to use an NTFS-formatted drive, which Asus Ez Flash 2 is not compatible with.

The solution is simply to use a FAT32-formatted drive. If that doesn’t work double check that your file hasn’t corrupted during the download and is complete, and the right BIOS for the board.

3 out of 5 eggsLight-weight, but lacks updated drivers

Pros: Small, slim, lightweight, and low power consumption. I like the design.

Cons: Lacks native W8 x64 graphics driver support. The graphics driver is actually outdated (290's). It's louder than the HTPC that I built from scratch, but it is in a much bigger case, so there's adequate cooling. Please read "Other thoughts" for more details.

Other Thoughts: I bought this to use as a light weight HTPC for watching recorded shows, movies, and listening to music. I was also planning to use it to watch Live TV with HDHomeRun Prime. I bought a 4GB RAM stick and a 64GB SSD. I have network drives, so I don't need to have much disk space on the unit itself. First thing I did after I received this unit was to update the BIOS. Then I installed W8 Pro and bought the WMC feature for $9.99. Everything installed fine, but I've been pulling my hair out trying to get WMC to work with Prime to watch Live TV. I have two other HTPCs in my network and I was able to configure them without much trouble. One of the suggestions (from research) was to update the graphics drivers... However, if you go to ASUS website, you'll see that as of today (1/08/13), there are no drivers available for W8 platform. I installed W7 x64 drivers using the compatibility setting. The drivers seem to be outdated and it's something that I can't update because I can't just download drivers from nVidia, since the drivers are configured specifically for the unit. I tried different methods (manually editing *.inf file to add the hardware ID) but no go. Card is recognized but fails install. My first impressions were very good and I had high hopes, but lack of updated drivers is a huge downfall. Sure, I can go back to W7, but I already bought W8 Pro with WMC... Starting to feel like it was a waste of money. It's great though if you are only planning to watch recorded shows, since it plays 1080p smoothly.

The problem I'm having with WMC and Live TV is that during tuner search, it keeps hanging and failing. This may not be a graphics driver problem, but I can't scratch it off the list since the drivers I am using are outdated.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to inform you that there will be no driver support for windows 8 on this nettop. When you upgrade to windows 8 just make sure that when it ask what you want to keep you want to select the first bullet that says files, applications, and software.

I have already sent a request to our head quarters and they said they will not support windows 8 on this unit.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little PC

Pros: Nice size! I was able to mount it on the back of a monitor. Runs very quite and pretty cool. I was able to use an extra HD and RAM that I had sitting around from a laptop upgrade. I installed LinuxMint on it for my Dad to do email and Web. Video runs well.

Cons: The Linux install took an extra step because of the Nvidia card. I had to boot in compatibility mode and install the Nvidia drivers. Smooth sailing after that. It is slower than an i5 or i7, but it's also MUCH cheaper.

4 out of 5 eggsGood media center PC

Pros: -Compact
-VERY low power
-BIOS has very good support for using SD Card slot as boot device
-Working great with MPlayer using VDPAU in Ubuntu

Cons: -External power brick (just wish it had an internal power adapter with a 2-prong cable)
-No instructions on how to open the case. This is the first time in many many MANY years I've had to look up how to open the case on a bare-bones PC.

HINT: Remove the 6 screws on the back, then slide the bottom twords the front of the case.

5 out of 5 eggsgood device

Pros: Decent boot time with sad.

Cons: No Instructions on how to open case but nothing Google can't solve.

Other Thoughts: Installed a full ubuntu distribution on an ssd disk. The system boots directly to xbmc and everything seems to work fine. No latency and the boot up time is reasonable.

1 out of 5 eggsCould not load Window 7

Pros: Good foot print, small size.

Cons: I bought this Asus barebone EB1033, I installed with RAM and SSD 60 GB, then install Window 7, it read BIOS but could not detect any drive in Window 7, tried to call ASUS they said use smaller SSD.
Then I bought 32 SSD, trying any possible ways, still Window 7 could not detect drives. I spend many hours could not figure it out. Upload BIOS and Driver from ASUS, still doesn't work. I would like to refund this. Any help ?

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry to hear that you could not load windows 7 on your ssd drive. Did you reformat the SSD drive and try to ghost an image to the ssd drive before installing onto the nettop.

Did you try to connect this SSD to another source to see if it is detected. If so, sounds like your unit is defective that you will have to send it in for service.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Small, cheap. I didn't measure power usage, but I expect it's pretty light.

Cons: On Windows, doesn't have enough power to playback Netflix HD (lot's of stuttering) even though CPU and GPU utilization is about 50%. YouTube 720p and 1080p also has a little stuttering in playback (but not as bad as Netflix Silverlight). ASUS driver support is very limited, only one driver release. Most drivers don't work with Windows Vista. Windows 8 works, but there was a ton of graphics bugs in Firefox. I had to disable D2D acceleration to get rid of the corruption in Firefox. I would have updated to latest Nvidia driver, but the Nvidia package doesn't install and the ASUS site has no newer Win7 or Win8 drivers.
Also, the fan runs 100% of the time and was a bit loud (I could hear it sitting 10 ft. away while talking with another person).

5 out of 5 eggsOpen Case

Pros: Small form factor, super low power consumption, USB 3.0, etc etc etc. I'm going to be using this device to test some thin client options with Xenapp at the hospital I work at. I'll update with conclusion :)

Cons: No instructions on getting into case makes it a little annoying when its barebone lol. But I found these instructions and wanted to share (main reason for posting a review.

3 out of 5 eggsMostly great

Pros: This is a slick little PC with a very small footprint. It runs everything I need it to smoothly and I had zero problems after I got everything physically installed.

Cons: As other users mentioned this is not the easiest thing to open. Had I not read the other reviews this would have taken longer. I had to press and slide a little harder than what seemed "safe". I find it very odd that for a PC that comes with no RAM and no drive (HDD or SSD) they wouldn't provide you with instructions on how to open it, being that you at least need to put RAM in it before it will boot.

Getting the case open was not all that difficult, however and I would still give this a 5 egg review if that's where my problems ended. It was not.

After I got the case open the RAM and SSD went in great, however there is no way to physically attach the drive other than the SATA power and data connectors. I thought it was odd, but figured I wouldn't move it much so it would be fine. I start to close the case and realize that there's a lip in the case that slides in directly between the SSD and the only thing attaching the drive to the mobo, the SATA power and data connectors. As I slide the case closed and press down the lip separates the drive from the connectors and now the drive is lose bouncing around inside the case unattached to anything. Over the course of about 30 minutes I keep trying to close this case and every time without fail I separate the drive from the SATA connectors. I checked over and over to make sure these were the only SATA connectors I could use and that that lip absolutely had to go between the drive and the connectors and it was the only way it would close.

The only way I could actually seal up the case was to get a chisel and actually remove that lip from where the drive meets the connectors. I chiseled away the plastic, sanded down the rough edges and the case sealed up perfect first try, SSD still attached.

Again, no instructions on how to open the case, fine. You'd still get 5 eggs, it's possible. Complete failure of QA/Engineering in that your case will separate the drive from the connectors every time it's closed? Come on! I love Asus, but if you plan on purchasing this keep in mind that you're likely going to have to make some case modifications.

There's a chance that maybe the drive makes a difference and seeing how no one else mentioned this in their review it makes me wonder, so the drive I used was OCZ Vertex Plus R2 VTXPLR2-25SAT2-120GB 2.5. I can assure you if you use this drive paired with this Asus PC, you will have to make case modifications.

Other Thoughts: Once the SSD/HDD is in you're golden, until then you'll likely need some case modifications.
