I've tested this as a portable VPN servers runing 2012 R2, CEntOS 6.5 and CEntOS 7. Runs LINUX on 2 GB and Windows on 4.

Added RAM, SSD and miniPCIe wireless (NOT INCLUDED).

No driver problems in either OS. Added 2nd NIC (USB3) and 2nd Wireless (USB2) just for fun, Windows detected both no problem. Had to compile drivers for LINUX - not fun.

With SSD, windows 8 or 2012 R2, boot times are very fast.

Cool, nearly silent - remarkable.

Great for a low end wired workstation for ~ $250.

Cons: Doesn't come with Wireless - ASUS site implies it does - says "up to 802.11AC" - one can read that as it has wireless and it'll connect at up to 802.11AC. Really means you can put any miniPCIe card in it as long as it fits the miniPCIe spec. So it could be anything. Misleading.

Other Thoughts: Overall very please with this 'toaster'. I'll buy more for linux appliance distros just to have separate devices (like a PBX running FreePBX - this device would do that very well).

Pros: Nice little system, it's basically a complete PC without the noise you get from a regular desktop

You NEED to buy RAM, mSata drive, and mini PCIe card (for wireless/bluetooth). The mini PCIe is optional if you don't need wireless or bluetooth, but you can get a combo card for $20-25.

All 3 are easy to install.

Cons: None really, other than knowing you need to buy more than just this item to have a functioning system.

Other Thoughts: If you are installing from, or need to use CDs or DVDs, you might want to buy a USB external CD/DVD device.
