5 out of 5 eggsGreat HTPC build

Pros: Small size, quiet (once you replace the hideous 80mm fan with better one)
Keeps cool even with i5-670
Worked perfectly with Win7 64 bit
Remote

Cons: What were they thinking with the 80mm fan????? it is by far the loudest fan I have heard since the prescotts

Other Thoughts: Had no problems with this build. Everything booted up and Windows 7 recognized it. Installed drivers from disk and was done. A few things I learned the hard way:
Be carefull of getting wires in front of the drive cage, they will cause the power switch to reset. The best trick was to route the cabeles in the drive cage then attach to MB at the end.
I got the remote to power on the whole system by enabling wake on mouse in the bios
The best way to set the fan is manual. Set the temp to start above the idle temp at min fan speed then adjust the rate so it maxes the fan at max temp. I ended up with 136 and 36 with intel stock fan. Quiet at idle and maxes out at 55C at full load.

5 out of 5 eggsWonderful System

Pros: Great price! Put in an i3-540, G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM, HITACHI Deskstar 7K1000.C 0F10383 1TB 7200 RPM HD, and I am able to stream 1080p HD movies on my 55" Plasma TV with zero problems (which is the main purpose of this unit) without a dedicated GPU. Fits nicely behind the TV and out of view. PCI-E port for possible future installation of Ceton InfiniTV 4 Quad-tuner which will also allow me to use the system as a DVR for digital cable.

Cons: The fans are a tab bit loud when the room is quiet, but even just normal TV shows at average volume drowns them out.

4 out of 5 eggsAwesome. Until.......

Pros: Small. Comes with an excellent remote. Enough ports, etc for an HTPC. Decent layout with a hinged removable drive cage that fits the DVD, and hard drive(s).
Nearly silent AFTER I replaced the case fan. Included fan is noisy. Simple job to replace it.
Intel HD Graphics on my Core i3 works great for everything a HTPC would be used for.

Cons: If you want to use SPDIF or Coax out for audio you need to buy an adapter. Biostar only sells one that won't fit, since you need a half height one. I actually found it on an auction site for 13 bucks. In Australia! (though you could just buy one from Biostar and run it thru an empty slot)

Now for the big CON. Network interface adapter failed after about 3 months. I really don't want to be without the machine for that long, so I wonder if Biostar will either cross ship a whole new machine, or just cross ship a new motherboard?

Other Thoughts: I wrote a review of this machine on Anandtech which was highly favorable. I don't blame Biostar for the failed NIC. I have seen this happen many times before, since I am a computer technician by trade. Hey, Biostar you out there? Can I get some kind of a cross ship?

Manufacturer Response:

Sorry to hear of your troubles and thank you for the good review. About the network issue, please contact gerry@biostar-usa.com for assistance.

1 out of 5 eggsYou get what you pay for!

Pros: Nice low price, I thought is would be a good base for my HTPC. Compact size, remote control included

Cons: Never really performed up to expectations. My wife needed a new computer for her at home job, so my plans for using this as an HTPC went on hold. Performance was sluggish using Windows XP, 4GB of Corsair RAM, Intel i5-650 processor. The fan was noisy and finally died after a month of use. After sitting around for a few months waiting for me to put it to it's original intended use, I decided to load Win7. Now it won't recognize the hard drive. I tried two other hard drives that I knew worked, different cable, used different SATA port and still the same problem. Seems like a controller issue, because it sounds like the read/write arm in the drive is going back and forth.

Other Thoughts: After months of frustration by my wife using this as a work PC, I broke down and built her a new system, and she is now happy. Going to try to deal with BIOSTAR and see how their customer support is. Will follow up later.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent

Pros: Inexpensive, simple design, straightforward to put together, and has worked the way it should without a single issue.

The worst problem I had was the i3 stock heatsink's "push pins," new to me.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Eco i2

G.Skill Ripjaws 4GB (Model F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL)

5 out of 5 eggsRemote Issues? Read on

Pros: - Compact yet still roomy
- 275w PSU gives enough juice for everything
- Good airflow and processor heatsink vents straight out of the mesh on the side of the case
- More BIOS settings and options than I can count
- Easy to configure and setup
- Lots of room for future upgrades and add-ins

Cons: - Packing job was pretty poor; why on earth would you put things loose inside the case?!
- Wires get in the way of re-mounting the drive tray
- There's a second 3.5" drive bay on the lower side of the tray, but good luck getting to it once it's mounted!

Other Thoughts: Trouble getting the remote to work? You need to enable it in the BIOS before it'll even be recognized. Super IO config > Onboard IR port (or something similar) > enable. Boot and it should recognize it. Then install the ITECIR driver if you're on windows.

The case itself is very nice and lacks any branding or insignia. Perfect for going incognito and putting your own on later. Onboard hardware works like a charm. Even though they shipped it with half of everything INSIDE the case (really?), it arrived undamaged. Excellent base for your LGA 1156 build and looks great in a media center (but make sure it has room to breathe)!

4 out of 5 eggsSo Far so Good

Pros: the price is nice for the 1156 socket.
case is well laid out inside. everything is easy to get into its place.
good number of usb ports for a small form factor.

Cons: packaging, like some had mentioned, was really pretty bad. accessories are thrown into the case and are free to bang around on the motherboard all the way to your doorstep.

Other Thoughts: built this system for my sister to play movies on her tv. HDMI output with audio support is great...make sure to get latest drivers (not what windows 7 installs) from intel though, i had problems getting dolby digital out until i did this. wish it had sata to esata cable included

5 out of 5 eggsBest combination /La mejor combinacion

Pros: This is the best system that I ever had easy to install Processor, the Hard drive and optical drive, is easy and secured way you assembly. I installed Pentium Intel i3it's really fast and the good thing is that you can upgrade to i5 and i7 also, this is good...
I have no problem at all in nothing.

I going to built another one for my cousin he wants the same that I have.

Oh! I forgot, the remote control that came with it, excellent
work perfect. Fallow the instruction in the little book that came with it, and you will get it to work.

Cons: The supervisor Password to secure the Bios setting had a little inconvenience to find it.
I had looking everywhere and it was not, until I finally saw that guy at last page page from the menu below. In other systems I used see it on the first page of the menu. This gave me a little had time, but after all was fun...

For Spanish Reader
El password para lackear los setting de Bios me dio unos minutos de incomodidad ya que no encontraba donde estaba esta utilidad en hasta que lo encontre en la ultima pagina del menu abajo, Ja, Ja, fue divertido..

5 out of 5 eggsabout h55 chipset

Pros: h55chipset does not have onboard video but allows to use graphic processor imbedded in cpu such as i3 500s i5 600s series, if you tried to use i5 700s and i7 processor you must have dedicated graphic card inserted on expansion slot.

Cons: not a con but not gonna work on cpu does not have gpu intergrated

Other Thoughts: only supports i5 with gpu intergrated such as 600 series

5 out of 5 eggsOutstanding as an HTPC

Pros: Good design, runs cool, everything you need at an amazing price.

Cons: The drive tray needed to be given a little tough love to fit in place properly once the drives were attached, but it was no big deal at all.

Other Thoughts: Added a DVD burner, a 1TB HDD, 4GB of DDR3, and a Core i5-661 in here. Plays StarCraft 2 on low settings quite well. Tunes and records TV easily while doing other stuff. Runs Ubuntu 10 in VirtualBox in the background. Easily upgradable in the future (dedicated video card and a quad-core i5 probably). Best money I ever spent on a computer.
