1 out of 5 eggsOverheated after a month

Pros: Small, light, and comes with a lot of accessories. The fit and finish of the packaging is impressive. The build quality and design of the unit seem really well thought out.

Cons: This nettop has a loud fan; and after a month of light use, the unit overheated and died. Now, I can't get the computer to pass POST. Googling the nt330i turns up a lot of comments about overheating, but I also see a lot of positive comments. I'm hoping that I just have a production fluke and that Foxconn replaces mine with a reliable one.

Other Thoughts: I have a ticket open with Foxconn support, so I hope an RMA is possible. If not, then this nettop was not worth the money, despite its low cost.

4 out of 5 eggsQuite Satisfied.

Pros: Great for a linux MythTV front end after some tweaking. Runs 64-bit Ubuntu 10.10 no problem on 2 GB ram. It is fast. Great picture. The wireless G actually streams 1080i content with no problem from my local back-end media server, using <10% of the processor.

Cons: Booting from USB on this device is a bit painful. It seems to hang for a while while loading the kernel image.... could be my USB stick I suppose. Still working on getting the device to wake up from S3 sleep using the remote.

Other Thoughts: For linux make sure you install the latest nvidia drivers and use "vdpau" for playback. I didn't install a HDD - I'm using a 16 GB USB stick. 8 GB should be enough though. I've heard there are problems with the wired ethernet port causing hangups in media playback in linux. Search "pci=nomsi" for the fix. The following applies if you are running from a USB install like myself. I suggest mounting /var/log and /tmp using a ramdisk. Search "tmpfs fstab" for more. Also search "vm.swappiness=0". I use a 1 GB swap file though (just in case). Make sure you format using ext2, and mount everything using "noatime". Also search "elevator=noop" or "elevator=deadline" for another performance tweak.

5 out of 5 eggsI love this thing already!

Pros: Small, cheap, fast! I am using Corsair 4GB RAM, item #: N82E16820145600 and it works perfectly (Foxconn REALLY needs to update their RAM compatibility table or make it a wiki at least). I am booting Ubuntu 10.10 directly off a Transcend 8GB SD card, Item #: N82E16820208503. And the fan, while audible, is by no stretch of the imagination "loud." I suspect the people complaining about this were simply expecting it to be silent.

Cons: Opening the case was slightly unintuitive. I used the end of a metal ruler to gently pry the sides away so that the lid would come off, which is exactly what you need to do. It's not sketchy, you just have to take a little care and it's easy.

Other Thoughts: I've literally just starting using this, so time will tell how media playback goes, but for my modest purposes I suspect it will be excellent. For the price I don't think this little box can be beat.

1 out of 5 eggsFoxconn Nightmare PT2 update

Pros: This an update to my previous review AND a response to FOXCONN's remarks on my review.

Well, I got a replacement from Newegg. It was handled very nicely I must say. I did notice though that the motherboard and the capacitors look slightly different then the one I returned. Don't know if this is an older or newer revision, but it is different. So I reinstalled Win7 64bit and started over again fresh.

I immediately saw a huge difference in temps...mid 70s to 80 Celsius at idle on the old unit.. even after removing the thermal pad that was half on half off and putting some arctic silver on it... the replacement unit is idling at 34-38 Celsius! So everything is great now right? Nope. Of course the $65.00 4GIG Patriot memory chip I bought with it is causing it to lock up and crash constantly still. I know this because I put a 2gig PNY chip in it from my laptop and it is stable. So that was a waste of 65 bucks. My response to Foxconn's comments on my initial review are below.

Cons: " 1. 4gig patriot mem is not listed in the memory Compatibility list, it has not been validated with your motherboard. Meaning it may or may not be compatible. Please try memory that is in compatibility list"

A.Have you tried using their website? G.o.d., its like trying to watch p.r.o.n. on a scrambled signal...next to impossible!

B. Maybe its just me, but if you specify the box takes up to 4gb 200 pin DDR2 SO-DIMM PC2 6400 Laptop memory, I shouldn't have to go find some compatibility chart on a website that's more offline than it is online. At least in the last 15 years I've been building computers I've never had to..

"2.The loose fan maybe caused by transportation or other rensons.
So please reinforcement fan+ thermal grease + heatsink fan."
C'mon. really? That's the best excuse you can come up with? The fan was fastened down tight. It just didnt matter because it was not making contact with the processor as the fan/heatsink uses copper inserts and the one over the cpu w

Other Thoughts: no matter how hard I tightened it or how much thermal paste I put on it wont matter if i doesnt make contact with the cpu...and the thermal pad didnt come loose in shipping...it was just laying loose , draped over the cpu .

Why cant they just take responsibility for putting out a shoddy product and poor quality control? If the box is picky about memory and only works with a handful of chips...why dont you put that in the documentation you send with the setup manual or put a warning on the box? Now I will have to go buy another memory chip for it and will be out the $65.00 for the one I bought for this unit...but that's my fault because I didn't go on your third rate website to find out that it wont work before I purchased it.... Pfffft. ...

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect Win7 XBMC / Media Center PC

Pros: 1080p with XBMC using Nvidia Ion Acceleration. 1080p Flash. No Silverlight Accelleration but I down use netflix... and it will have Accelleration eventually. Mix with MCE remote, IOGear RF keyboard, HDHomeRun, and my server of movies downstairs... and life is perfect.

Cons: a little noisy... until I turn on the surround sound. Then who care.

Other Thoughts: perfect. use wintoflash to put windows 7 iso onto flash drive for install.

2 out of 5 eggsNoisy Power Supplies! ! ! ! !

Pros: Small. Neat concept. DVD combo. Actually, the Slim DVD has been more consistent and reliable than the NT330i.

Cons: Poor execution of concept. Inconsistent build quality? Poor quality OE suppliers?

The current one I have runs hotter than the first. First one's CPU topped out in the 40c range. This one tops 50c+, per speedfan. ???Hmmm???

Power supply's cap-whine SCREAMS after a few days of use. So loud, I can hear in next room. Only power brick I have ever had that made noise you could hear w/o pressing ear on against housing. We'll see if RMA #2 solves any issues...

Other Thoughts: As compared to my kid's Acer Aspire One:
- The Aspire cost about the same as NT330i
- The Aspire has a 10" TFT screen
- The Aspire came with RAM, HD, and OS
- The Aspire's PS does not make noise
- The Aspire has slightly less processor and GPU

By this comparison, this NT330i does not appear to be a good deal. However ION graphics and ability to build-up as one sees fit is nice, for some.

If it wasn't for the cool slim DVD drive, and discount price, this thing would have been shipped back for refund weeks ago.
