5 out of 5 eggsGreat product

Pros: This is the second FoxConn Booksize PC that I've owned. I had an older version ( that I've owned for about 3 years and decided to upgrade given the processing power was low. I use it as a diskless home PC and run Puppy Linux OS on it. Overall, this newer model, is quite a bit faster and takes faster RAM. I have no problems running things like Google Earth, or Torcs racing game on it. Of course, it is not nearly as fast as modern PCs and/or laptops, but if you need a cheap, small, diskless, secure PC, then this is great. It is exceptionally quiet given it is diskless and consumes little power. I highly recommend Foxconn line of Booksize PC. Just plug in some RAM, a USB stick (with OS image on it) and you're good to go. You can also plug in hard drive. I would recommend an internal SSD such as

Cons: Could be even cheaper

Other Thoughts: In a year or two, I'll be happy to upgrade to another one that's even faster.

Manufacturer Response:

4 out of 5 eggs1 yr review

Pros: I just realized today that this box will take at least 8GB of RAM. All documentation I'd looked at when first putting it together noted 4GB max RAM, so I never tried to exceed that amount. Out of boredom (and disappointment with only 4), I experimented with an 8GB SODIMM and it works fine. I'm using a Crucial CT102464BF1339 8GB SODIMM with no issues.

Cons: The foxconn manufacturer's page advertises this product as "noiseless". For this reason, when first purchased, I assumed this device would have no system fan. However, it does, and is noticeable if you've got a sensitive ear. I have mine VESA-mounted behind a monitor and use it as my primary desktop. With my head just a couple feet from the screen, I can hear the fan. I've gotten used to it though. Not terrible. Just not the complete silence that I'd expected. I think foxconn should remove the "noiseless" tag from the overview page of any product that has a fan.

4 out of 5 eggsCapable HTPC, but loud fan

Pros: Energy efficient
Multiple USB 2.0 (4) and 3.0 (2)
HDMI, VGA output
Onboard wireless, ethernet

Cons: Single fan, difficult to replace, audible whine

Other Thoughts: I bought this to replace an aging (7 year) HP slimline that I was using for torrenting, streaming (comedy central, youtube), and XBMC. It has the capabilities to deal with those without an issue. The problem comes from the on-board fan. I'm currently looking into ways to replace it, but it otherwise produces a very audible whine

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great as HTPC box

Pros: Cheap
Low power
Small form factor.
Real computer.
Hardware accelerated video decoding.

Cons: Could be a bit faster

Other Thoughts: This worked great on a trusty (14.04) install of ubuntu with xbmc. Plays 1080p h264 (high bit-rate) files with no problems with audio over HDMI. Video is accelerated using VAAPI to offload decoding to the GPU, worked for every file I tried.

Even without GPU decoding on mplayer2 it was fast enough to play high bit-rate 720p bluray rips. All in all well worth the $150. Slapped a SSD and 4 GB of ram and with a wireless keyboard/mouse (IOGEAR GKM561R) it makes a great HTPC able to handle everything I throw at it for under $300 completed. It boots quite fast with the SSD and with a full ubuntu install can be used for doing browsing and other stuff, etc...

5 out of 5 eggsSmall, Affordable, Quite, and Power Efficient

Pros: I build these for a client of mine. They are used in an office setting with the VESA mount. They are very quiet and when paired up with a SSD they fly! I recommend these if you do not need a ton of horsepower. They fit the bill and work very well.

Cons: None that I can think of.

4 out of 5 eggsGood overall

Pros: Good performance in a small package

Cons: Hard drive mount could not be removed

Other Thoughts: Overall I'm impressed with the quality and performance. The only bad thing so far is that the screws for the hard drive cage could not be removed. They're glued in with loctite to prevent loosening from vibration, but I could not remove two of the screws to install the hard drive. I saw another review mentioning case screws that couldn't be removed and thought it was probably that they weren't using a properly sized screwdriver. But nope, it's true - some of the screws are torqued and glued in so tightly that they absolutely cannot be removed. I'm fortunately using a lightweight solid state hard drive and was able to rig up something to hold it in. Hope they can fix this manufacturing issue in the future. Other than that, it's a great little PC.

4 out of 5 eggsQuite, Light and Fast Enough

Pros: As per title, it is Quite, Light and Fast Enough. Better than my previous Intel Atom N270 net top which lasted 4 years. Hope this would last than long too.

Cons: One of the case screw is stuck and cannot be remove. I'm have to FORCE to rotate the case to insert HDD and RAM.

Other Thoughts: Ensure the CASE screw can be remove easily by hand strength otherwise how to insert HDD.

2 out of 5 eggsGreat little box, if it didn't die on me

Pros: Low price, Celeron chip / Intel Video chip great for HD.

Cons: To load XP, have to put sata in legacy IDE mode. Raid drivers dont work with XP when running setup (not foxconn's fault necessarily). My Machine died within a week.

Other Thoughts: Machine is kind of a pain to load XP on. Have to put SATA interface into a legacy IDE mode to get windows to install. I may have gotten a bad unit (hopefully), but mine had issues turning on for a while. I was able to get it to the point of installing windows....then moved the computer to its permanent location, and could never get it on again. Waiting for RMA.

2 out of 5 eggsNo wireless on Linux

Pros: Very nice small form factor pc/server that is great for special projects. Have installed multiple distro's of Linux on this and all devices have been recognized. Dual Core CPU for work where one core just won't keep up.

Cons: Shortcomings are only one DIMM slot so 4G is your max choice for this box. Broken Intel Centrino-N wireless. Multiple Linux Distro's and multiple Intel Driver updates do not fix. Wireless card is on the back of the motherboard so it cannot be removed and replaced.

Other Thoughts: Product is designed as a TV/LCD set back media server. As such it is a failure. This need requires working wireless to avoid ethernet cables down the walls which you won't get with this product without replacing the Centrino-N wireless card with either another card or a USB dongle (what I'm going to have to do). The broken wireless is a core Intel issue with the Centrino-N wireless line. The people in the Intel forums are close to rioting over it (go read for yourself).
Foxconn Support Team how can this defective wireless card be removed and replaced? Working 802.11b/g wireless is 54mbit/sec faster than broken non-working 802.11n wireless.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

We apologized for the inconvenience you've experienced, we would certainly take care of this problem.
