3 out of 5 eggsSolid, fast, quiet, but very hot

Pros: I wanted to be able to run a small MSSQL database from this tiny pc. Assembly was quick with 16gb ram and a 750gb Samsung SSD. Windows 8 installed in no time and the first weeks run of Prime 95 was almost perfect. Idle temps were at 20c, full load was no higher than 50c. And even under load, the cooling fan was nothing more than a whisper. Exactly what I was hoping for.

Cons: Here it is a few months later and with zero load, idle temps are 49-50c for no apparent reason and because of the heat the CPU is throttling back to 900mhz with a 1-2% load at idle. Prime 95 rockets it up to 65c or 70c. I can barely hear the cooling fan kick on and then off. The only real change has been an update to windows 8.1. I will try to upgrade the BIOS but the instructions on the foxconn site are about as clear as mud. Foxconn's own support software Fox Care doesn't recognize this product so it's worthless as a trouble shooting measure. Additionally, due to the nature of the case, it's impossible to visually inspect the cpu cooling to see if the fan is clogged or to even throw an extra fan onto the CPU to increase cooling.

Other Thoughts: This was a great little machine when I first started with it and if I can find the cause of the overheating, it may well be great again. Right now though, one star deducted for lack of support tools from Foxconn and one star for the sealed bottom case so no extra cooling can be added until the real cause of the over heating is corrected.

4 out of 5 eggsNice little machine with few draw back.

Pros: Fast, capable, energy saving and compact size.

Cons: mini PCIE is mSATA compatible but the link speed is only 3Gb/s.

Other Thoughts: Hosting 6 VMs on this without any issue. Using VMware ESXi 5.1 since 5.5 doesnt have the required LAN driver (unless you injected the old driver from 5.1.)

4 out of 5 eggsAT-7700

Pros: Nice case finish, quiet, works with dual HDMI LCDs using 1 DVI-D to HDMI adapter, PCMark05 1.2.0 scored 14731, 3DMark11 Firestrike scored only 516, Win7 Pro cold boot to Ctrl+Alt+Del screen is only 19 seconds! Uses: Office 2010 and similar office programs, not gamming

Cons: When using the stand: power button is towards the top and tends to want to tip over and would be better lower, security slot to lock with cable is towards lower front of case and would be better at back

Other Thoughts: Used Mushkin 2x4GB DDR3 1600 RAM 997033, Kingston SSD SV300S37A/120G, Gigabyte DVI-to-HDMI adapter for 2nd LCD 12CT2-HDMI02-11R, Dual ASUS PB238Q 23" LCDs, Rosewill external slim USB 2.0 DVD ROD-EX002 = would recommend getting USB 3.0 external drive, NipponLabs 3' HDMI cables HDMI-HR-3, CSP security cable CSP820394

3 out of 5 eggsTiny, Fast, Quiet

Pros: 2/3rds the size of a Mac Mini
Very Quiet
Runs Ubuntu Great
Well laid out ports
Easy to finish a build
2 memory slots
space for a full 2.5" hard drive

Cons: Lacking Documentation/Specifications
Very few professional reviews
No way to access mPCI Slot under the motherboard
No way to access cooling under the motherboard
No Bluetooth! (really in 2013?)
No ESata

Other Thoughts: There's so much to this little box! It's actually a really good machine to build around. I gave up 2 cores and some mhz to go from a mac mini to this and I don't mind. I ended up suing an SSD to compensate performance wise. It runs better than the Mac Mini Server so far for my needs.

My main issue is the documentation. Its as if they couldn't make up their mind if this is a techie product of a consumer product. The system has a header for a second SATA connection (labeled as such), another set of USB3 ports, and has a second micro pci slot underneath. Foxconn has also indicated that they would revise the PCB to allow mSATA hard drives as well. However, we have NO documentation as to a) the existence of the headers or extra mPCI slot and b) no revision numbers as to which box we're receiving. Even a pinout would have helped!. c) appears to have infrared receiver, but again no documentation (doesn't seem to work in ubuntu)

From a hobby builder standpoint the lack of documentation, and the lack of bluetooth loses 2 eggs for me! Too bad as this is a really great system (with an ssd and loads of memory)

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect HTPC

Pros: Extremely Stable
Very Quiet
Fast
Easy to setup
Fast Boot

Cons: None found yet, extremely happy

Other Thoughts: I transferred a Samsung 840 Pro SSD with a full Win 8 build from another brand of a similar barebones box to the Foxconn Nano expecting to have to reinstall Windows, but it booted perfectly in 6 seconds to Metro interface with auto login. Needed to install the Foxconn drivers, but everything has been runnng 24x7 for about 6 days. Relatively cool. I cannot hear any fan noise at all. This is a very well built unit (compared to the other unit I was using). There appears to be an IR receiver on the front panel, but I didn't see any documentation on that nor have I tested it. Runs XMBC like a champ, audio over HDMI works fine to receiver.

4 out of 5 eggsAn interesting option

Pros: small
quiet
quick
well-designed

Cons: NOT silent
NOT fanless

Other Thoughts: This is a great little machine, but the AT-7700 is NOT completely silent as advertised, and it is NOT fanless. It is, however, very quiet.

I've had a number of unusual problems with getting the unit up and running. After about a day of use there was some kind of short in the system that completely fried my Crucial M4 500GB SSD. Utterly killed it. I've owned that drive for 18 months, used it in several machines, and never had a problem before. The short also wiped out my backup drive docking station. It was all very weird ... and expensive to fix.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

We thank you for your support in Foxconn Product.

Our 7000 series models are the Intel Core-i SKU and it is NOT fanless, our Fanless models are the 5000 series (AT-5570/AT-5250), these will be completely silent when paired with a SSD.

We apologize for any confusion we might have caused.

Best Regards,

Foxconn Support Team

5 out of 5 eggsRock Solid, Good Performance

Pros: Very stable, runs cool, not a hint of a problem. Good performance.

Cons: Mini PCIe not mSATA compatible. Foxconn replied to my query on 4/26/13 as follows: "The current AT-7000 NanoPC barebone cannot support mSATA on the mini PCIe slot. In the future, we will upgrade the PCB revision from 1.0 to 1.1 to support mSATA on the mini PCIe slot."

Other Thoughts: Very happy with this little box. Highly recommend. Biggest problem is finding it in stock.
