4 out of 5 eggsLinksys online support terminated session when they couldn't help

Pros: The device works well and has rarely gone down once the intial setup was complete.

Cons: Difficult to format hard drives that do not come with the device.

Lacks the ability to backup to shares on the network as well as to disk2. Even the NSLU2 allows that functionality.

Linksys support is TERRIBLE. They disconnected the online session when they couldn't help me with my issue. No good-bye, have a good day...

Other Thoughts: Copy of online chat with linksys support, Jesse M(16399). Wish I could have posted the whole thing!
..........
Jason: You contradict yourself you said that you "do not have the copy for the r23 firmware", now you say that you won't give it to me unless it will fix my problems?
Jason: It is online on multiple websites saying that the efg120 that they received had r23 installed.
Jesse M(16399): We do have them, we just cannot give out such firmware as they need to be requested.
Jason: That is what I'm doing, requesting... Why does the efg120 not give the ability to backup to shared drives such as the lesser nslu2 device?

1 out of 5 eggsIT Pro : Computer Company owner

Pros: It looks nice.

Cons: Web interface tool stinks. User manual needs work. This unit was setup in an office with 4 users. The unit worked fine for a week or so. After that, it was better suited as a boat anchor! The unit would not reconnect the drive mapping. When it was mapped it would drop users when editing or accessing a document. It would not handle it's basic functions!.....performing as a network/shared drive. Philipine tech support will put you to sleep with thier scripted assistance. I had to call the corporate number to get advanced supported more quickly. Basic support is a huge waste of my time. Unable to verify backups with the supplied software.

Other Thoughts: We finally made the switch to a Buffalo Linkstation(so far , so good). Website says the latest firmware is Rv.18(unit shipped with v23) and advanced supported is holding on to v25! They did send me firmware v25 . This unit was purchased with the idea of storing shared documents amongst 4 users on a cisco network. It failed! Good luck if you move forward with this.

1 out of 5 eggsDrive 1 failed; ate drive 2

Pros: The listed feature set looks very good.

Cons: Does not work as documented; cannot create shares on second drive; not true RAID mirror; if backup job fails it appears to eat drive 2; print q view does not work with Windows

Other Thoughts: I had already posted a review of this item, but to update:
I have a client with one of these in use for about a year. The other day, drive 1 failed. It appears that the nightly backup job corrupted drive 2. Drive 2 now shows up as "not formatted" where it was fine last month.

Good luck recovering from THAT. I cannot recommend this unit for any business use. And it costs too much for home use.

3 out of 5 eggsGood if you don't need to back up data!

Pros: I have had this unit up and running for several months and it seems to run fairly stable. I’ve never had to reboot it like other brands.

Cons: The problem is that I can’t tell if the backup ever ran. The light comes on after the backup runs but I have no confirmation that the backup was complete and I can’t access any backup files. They are non-existent. I have tried calling Linksys tech support only to talk to a person in a foreign country that has no experience with this unit. The person on the phone proceeded to read text strait from the manual which I found to be rather insulting. If you don’t install a second drive for the use of backing up files from the primary drive, this is a good choice for you.

1 out of 5 eggsDoes not work-Linksys doesn't care

Comments: I installed one of these units in a customer's site, and it's been working okay with nightly copies. The other unit I have been trying to get to work properly. You can't install a second disk and use 240gb of space. The instructions say you can, but it doesn't work.
Linksys support still has my case open, but it's been referred to the black hole that they call "product managment."

Basically, it doesn't work as promised. Liksys support has trouble figuring out what you're talking about when you call them about an EFG120.

1 out of 5 eggsNo, no, no!

Comments: Less than a month after deploying this thing, it failed catastrophically! Config was gone, user database was gone, shares were gone. The built in disk to disk backup utility, although scheduled, never ran. I have 4 more of these and I'm looking for replacements. Support from LinkSys - zilch.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat!!!

Comments: I've had 2 of these running 24/7 for over 8 months and they have been flawless. I've read many negative reviews, but for simple network storage they're great. Never had to reboot them or anything. I also like the small footprint and quiet operation.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellient for Small Business

Comments: I've found this device to be an excellient low end solution for data storage across a network. With the integrated print server and user security policies, it's a super replacement for a low-end server.
