Redefining the Desktop PC

Challenging the way we define a desktop PC, GIGABYTE engineers have developed an ultra compact PC with a stylish design based around an anthracite aluminum frame and glass surface chassis. Ideal for a broad range of computing applications at home or in the office, the BRIX expounds sheer simplicity and convenience. With a broad choice of processors covering the entire performance spectrum, the BRIX sets a new standard for desktop miniaturization that makes it perfect as a discreet HTPC/multimedia hub, an ultra-low power PC for the family, an office PC, or as a digital signage unit.

Dual Display

With support for HDMI and DisplayPort, the BRIX can power two displays simultaneously, making it a perfect choice as a high productivity PC in professional and home environments, or in any number of industrial and commercial multi-display applications.

Flexible Compact PC Kit

The BRIX is sold as a DIY PC kit, shipping with a Mini PCIe Wi-Fi module pre-installed, plus a power adapter and cable conforming to local standards. Requiring only system memory and an mSATA SSD, the BRIX gives users the flexibility to independently choose integrated storage and system memory size, without the trouble of sourcing components that are not widely available on the retail market.

VESA Support

Bundled with a VESA bracket, the BRIX can easily be mounted behind a monitor or HDTV, making it discreetly hidden from view. This makes a simple and effective way to turn any VESA-compliant display or TV into a full-featured PC or digital signage unit.

1 out of 5 eggsDidn't live to expectations

Pros: Size, speed, 4 USB ports, dual monitors, low sound

Cons: Very buggy w/ support that is, well, very buggy. Previously wrote a review regarding two monitor issue. Thru trial and error found it was an issue w HDMI port. Mnfr did offer support on the issue through my review, thankfully, because their website doesn't. However, the support really amounted to "Do you have latest BIOS (and) What memory are you using. Flashing the BIOS for a 64 bit system was a little archaic. No one stop, hit an executable here. After I confirmed the BIOS upgrade and the model of memory sticks, Support refused to answer. Of course, the BIOS upgrade fixed the issue, however 1) Good six months for fix to be issued 2) How about a little honesty and say "update the bios and that will fix the issue"?

Other Thoughts: Very disappointed with both the product as it rolled out and the failure to own up to the issues. Seems that Gigabyte regrets the whole line, as they no longer seem to actively market and have not seen fit to add it into their product line under Support.

1 out of 5 eggsNo Backup BIOS

Pros: Works nicely when it wants to work.

Cons: This unit decided to take one of it's many dumps right in the middle of a BIOS update.

This is 2014, why only put a single $5 BIOS chip on any motherboard?

Other Thoughts: Disconnected the battery for a 30 minutes hoping the BIOS would reset. NADA!

4 out of 5 eggsMy GIGABYTE GB-BXi5-4200 Freezes During BIOS Update

Pros: Small, Not Power Hungry, Quiet. When it works it works well.

Cons: Intermittent lock ups. This thing would work for a few weeks without any problems (except Firefox would crash every few hours).

I had the F3 bios and saw that there was a F5 BIOS available.

Downloaded F5 and in the middle of flashing it froze. Now when i turn the unit on there is no activity. It's DEAD.

How do I bring this PC back to life?

I have the Kingston 120 GB SMS200S3 SSD and 8GB, 2x4 of Corsair CMSO4GX3M1C1333C9 installed. Both are on the approved components list.

Do I send the unit to gigabyte or do I buy a new BIOS chip and solder it myself?

Other Thoughts: $400 for the Brix, $90 for the RAM and $85 for the SSD. I gotta get this thing working again.

1 out of 5 eggsSecond thoughts

Pros: It has some great marketing behind it.

Cons: There is something wrong with the WiFi card in this thing. I contacted Gigabyte and RMA'd it once. It was gone for over 3 weeks and it's behavior hasn't changed. It does not play well with routers. I sit in front of this computer feeling like its 1995 all over again because the network stack is so slow.

Other Thoughts: It took me an hour to RMA this thing because the people who work for Gigabyte's RMA department just won't pick up the phone. I would reccomend slecting the "Sales" option if you do have to call them because they will pick up right away. Also, be prepared to lose your computer for weeks at a time with no communication what-so-ever. I don't even know if they did anything to my computer because the invoice they sent back with it has no details. I sincerely regret this purchase. Caveat emptor: go with the times and buy a tablet.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome little fella.

Pros: Very small and very powerful. Included Wi-Fi and Bluetooth is a nice touch.

Cons: Red light shining out of the headphone jack is totally unnecessary and very annoying. If the jack was on the back, who cares, no big deal. But noooooo. It's right there on the front, burning into my retina every time I want to watch TV. And there's no way to turn it off. A little electric tape took care of that, but really Gigabyte, did nobody notice this during pre-production testing?

Other Thoughts: I absolutely cannot believe the performance this little thing achieves. All I threw in was a couple 4Gb sticks of old laptop memory I had laying around (luckily it was 1.35v) and a relatively cheap Mushkin 60Gb mSATA drive. Windows 7 installed from a USB 3.0 thumbdrive was done in just a few minutes. I sat and watched it happen in complete shock.

It then took about an hour downloading and installing all the updates.

All that complete, it now boots to the desktop and loads XBMC in 7 seconds. No, I'm not making that up. No, I'm not exaggerating. No, I'm not imagining things. I timed it. Multiple times. 7 seconds. SEVEN.

I know. Unbelievable.

Anyways, I connect this gizmo to my network via Asus N66R wireless bridge and it pulls my blu-ray rips from my Synology 1812+ NAS (uncompressed MKV files). The TV is in my bedroom, the NAS and router is in my basement, 2 floors away. No problem whatsoever. All movies play normally. Great HD picture and great sound.

It's been about a month and I still cannot get over how powerful this little fella is.

2 out of 5 eggsSame Dual Monitor Issue

Pros: This is one tiny powerful PC. Was able to get it up and running quickly

Cons: Limited BIOS options, and like another reviewer, I could not boot the BRIX with two monitors attached, I had to unplug one and then it would boot.

I build a lot of embedded applications for OEMs and my hopes were high for this form factor. The monitor problem is a killer though. To top it all off after about a day it stopped booting completely. Returned for an exchange RMA, could just have had bad luck.

Other Thoughts: PCs need to keep going in this direction. Machines this size have so many applications its sick!

4 out of 5 eggsGreat with reservations

Pros: The performance at the small form-factor is as advertised. Coupled with a 3TB external HD, it is THE HTPC solution.

Cons: The first one delivered started up with a baseball-card-in-the-bicycle-spokes racket that did not go away. An obvious defective fan out of the box. This plants seeds of doubt regarding the quality of the units...Only time will tell. Also, the headphone jack lights up with an obnoxious red LED that stares at you from behind the glass entertainment center doors. I wish there was a BIOS setting the turn that off.

Other Thoughts: It's a little pricey but it's kind of out of mainstream so you have to pay for that.

2 out of 5 eggsBuggy Intel video

Pros: Size, speed. The SSD is a real hard drive.

Cons: I own several, wished I had tried one first. System will not boot with dual monitors. Just hangs at boot. we disconnect monitor 2, boot, connect monitor 2, and works great. BIOS a little buggy. With everything set to not sleep, after 6 - 8 hrs, video will enter a sleep, and will not recover with both monitors attached. Thanks Intel, Thanks Gigabyte. Have same hanging issue with a unit attached to one monitor.

Gets pricey at 8 to 16 gig w SSD +200 gb, though I would have overlooked if video driver wasn't buggy

5 out of 5 eggsPretty good

Pros: It is exactly what I needed for a linux desktop. I installed gentoo and all the drivers worked pretty well. Everything compiles super fast. It boots in about 5 seconds. It is dead silent unless you are doing something super processor intensive, and even then it is still pretty silent.

Cons: I have had a few issues with the cheap wireless card in it, but it does work. I ended up using a usb wireless I had instead because it is more reliable. Luckily this thing has 4 usb ports. The sound also required a custom alsa.conf to get functioning.

There is a mild annoyance where it turns on at the slightest activity, pressing a key, unplugging anything from usb. There may be a way to fix this, I haven't delved into it too much.

Other Thoughts: To save someone the trouble, drivers for linux were rtl8723ae for wireless and snd_hda_intel for sound. The rest of it worked without trouble.

4 out of 5 eggsNeat little machine

Pros: Zippy, compact, and so quiet.

Cons: -The SSD is fast, but I think I'd still rather have an acutal hard drive for storage capacity and reliability.
-i5 seems very fast no apparent reason to spend money for the i7
-The HD4400 graphics do studder a bit it'd be nice to have a more robust graphic option.

Other Thoughts: -I wish it had an SD card reader--there seems to be enough space
-Ubuntu installed in less than 10 minutes.
-I had to update my WiFi router's firmware (Netgear N300; WNR2000V3) to get the Brix to connect.
