5 out of 5 eggsWorks like a charm!

This review is from: GIGABYTE GB-BXi7-4500 2 x 204Pin SO-DIMM Intel HD Graphics 4400 Integrated by CPU Mini-PC Barebone

Pros: Compact (hides almost anywhere)
Quiet (one fan, RARELY kicks on)
Speedy (no slowdowns noticed as of yet)
Works like a charm from the get go.

Cons: Comes with a utilities DVD, but obviously does not have a optical drive... would have been smart to include the utilities on a small thumb drive instead.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this Brix kit to replace a laptop that was starting to show it's age. Due to my work, I switch between PC and Mac throughout the day. Since I already have a 27" iMac, I thought why not use it as the display to save even more desktop space. So I picked up a mini displayport cable, hooked the Brix to my iMac, and BAM! I had my monitor. Added a Logitech K400r keyboard and I was set.
This combination is working flawlessly and I couldn't be happier. Instant switching from Mac to PC, ZERO loss of desk space, and the Brix is as quiet as the iMac. I can also drag the Brix over to my TV or really any display and have everything at my fingertips.

Now one important note, the Brix DOES have a fan and it can kick on every once and a while. It is by no means completely silent.

My configuration is:
GIGABYTE GB-BXi7-4500
Crucial M500 240GB SSD
Crucial 16GB DDR3 1600
Windows 81. Pro

5 out of 5 eggsPocket size full PC

This review is from: GIGABYTE GB-BXi7-4500 2 x 204Pin SO-DIMM Intel HD Graphics 4400 Integrated by CPU Mini-PC Barebone

Pros: In other reviews I have heard complaints about fan noise. Mine is completely quiet even under heavy load. Flexible display connection options, with display port adapters and HDMI.

Cons: The included Wifi/BT card is not the greatest.

Other Thoughts: I would get the newer versions of the brix i7 with the quad core for a little more money. Replace included Wifi with a Intel 7260HMW for more reliable connections and much faster speed, especially if you have a dual band ac access point. I get 867mbps with that card and this brix 50ft away. I often use it by remotely connecting to it, with it only being connected to power.

1 out of 5 eggsMisleading video in Overview page

This review is from: GIGABYTE GB-BXi7-4500 2 x 204Pin SO-DIMM Intel HD Graphics 4400 Integrated by CPU Mini-PC Barebone

Pros: All of the features listed by Newegg/Gigabyte.

Cons: CPU fan, see Other Thoughts below.

Other Thoughts: I gave this 1 egg and felt I needed to write this review because I believe the video in the Newegg Overview page is misleading regarding how the unit is cooled.

At 7:59 the 2 guys in the video dissemble the unit to illustrate that the CPU is cooled by using thermal paste with the entire case being used to cool the CPU. Based on that it would seem that this is a passively cooled and silent unit. What they don't show you is the CPU uses a cooling fan. I have the i7 version of the Haswell Brix, and the BIOS reports the CPU fan spinning at roughly 4,500 RPM after only a 4-5 minutes of very basic use.

Since the cooling fan is quite small it needs to spin at a higher RPM making the acoustics definitely very noticeable and quite irritating. Smaller CPU fan's tend to make a higher pitch/whining sound and the fan used in this Haswell Brix is no different.

I was extremely disappointed when I finally got my Brix, booted it up and heard the whining of the CPU fan. I wanted to save someone else the hassle of getting this because they think it might be passively cooled and silent based on the Newegg video and also no mention of a fan anywhere in the specs.
