Redefining the Desktop PC

Challenging the essence of how we define a desktop PC, GIGABYTE engineers have developed an ultra compact PC with a stylish design based around an anthracite aluminum frame and glass surface chassis. Ideal for a broad range of computing applications at home or in the office, the BRIX expounds sheer simplicity and convenience. With a broad choice of processors covering the entire performance spectrum, the BRIX sets a new standard for desktop miniaturization that makes it perfect as a discreet HTPC/multimedia hub, an ultra-low power PC for the family, an office PC or as a digital signage unit.

Dual Display

With support for HDMI and DisplayPort, the BRIX can power two displays simultaneously, making a perfect choice as a high productivity PC in professional and home environments, or in any number of industrial and commercial multi-display applications.

Flexible Compact PC Kit

The BRIX is sold as a DIY PC kit, shipping with a Mini PCIe Wi-Fi module pre-installed, plus a power adapter and cable conforming to local standards. Requiring only system memory and mSATA SSD, the BRIX gives users the flexibility to independently choose integrated storage and system memory size, without the trouble of sourcing components that are not widely available on the retail market.

VESA Support

Bundled with a VESA bracket, the BRIX can easily be mounted behind a monitor or HDTV making it discreetly hidden from view. This makes it simple and effective way to turn any VESA-compliant display or TV into a full-featured PC or digital signage unit.

2.5" SATA Hard Drive Support

Utilizing SATA III 6Gbps high speed data transfer technology, the GIGABYTE BRIX Pro supports the installation of one 2.5" SATA hard drive and one mSATA SSD module. This allows for optimized storage configurations which combine fast SSD performance with larger capacity hard drives.

5 out of 5 eggsSuper Mini PC for non-gamers

Pros: Ultra small form factor, VESA mountable, included WiFi and BT, core i3, supports 16 GB RAM, Intel HD (1920x1080), full size HDMI port, USB 3, room for both mSATA and 2.5 inch SATA 3 drives, Virtualization support, power on from USB, quiet.

Cons: Needed to copy WiFi drivers to a USB in order to download and install the rest of the drivers. With flash drives/cards so cheap I don't know why manufacturers don't include a small flash drive with drivers instead of a CD. Not enough of a problem to take an egg off.

Other Thoughts: Built this to replace an ancient Gateway PC for a family member. They aren't a gamer, so went with the i3 version. Build was a breeze, installed Win7 Home Premium 64 from a USB drive (you'll need an ISO image, which I believe can either be ripped from a retail Win7 disc or downloaded).

Since this wasn't built for a power user, I opted for a spinning drive for the secondary drive. If it was a build for myself I would've gone with the core i5 model and an SSD for the 2.5 inch.

If you include both an mSATA drive and a 2.5 inch and want to boot from the mSATA, you'll have to change the boot order in the BIOS. The motherboard/BIOS is architected such that SATA drive is the "first" drive.

For non-gamers, this thing is responsive. I'm impressed. My previous Mini PC build was a Zotac with an Intel Atom CPU. The core i3 blows it away.

My build:
16 GB RAM - 2 x G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) F3-1600C9S-8GRSL
250 GB mSATA - SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-MTE250BW mSATA 250GB SATA III
1 TB SATA - HGST Travelstar H2IK10003272SN (0S03563) 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5"
Display - Asus VE248H Black 24" Full HD HDMI LED Backlight LCD Monitor w/Speakers

5 out of 5 eggsNice little box

Pros: Small form factor.
Relatively quiet (still a bit of fan noise)
Quick enough
Easy to assemble (see notes below)
Easy on power.

Cons: Don't ever try, not quick enough for 4K decoding. (I have a Brix Pro i5-4570R to handle this

Price is a bit steep if you factor in the RAM and mSATA SSD cost. Not such a big issue if you go for just 2.5"

Other Thoughts: For the assemble part, choose your parts wisely.
Look at the gigabyte.us compatibility list for RAM, very important! I bought a GEIL but it wasn't on the list and even though it's 1.35V it wasn't supported. No way to boot.

Also, it can't handle 4K video playback. Tried a couple sources and it's 100% CPU usage with pauses. HD (1920x1080) should be fine.

I put it in my room, works so great.

Here's my setup:
Kingston 4GB DDR3-1600 CL11 1.35V SODIMM.
Hitachi 1TB 2.5" HDD
Intel 530 series mSATA SSD 240GB.

5 out of 5 eggsA Solid PC

Pros: >Case machined high quality - extremely accurate, well built. Vents are properly designed/positioned.
>Internals are well laid out - hardware of high quality.
>i3 is fast enough for most average use computing - I use it as media PC and have not heard the fan kick up during HD streaming. (Only 2 days of use but don't intend to use it any harder)
>Overall, its a solid PC - quite simply, a laptop w/o keyboard, mouse, monitor, or DVD, in a box.
>Newegg is pretty much the cheapest/easiest place to get these units - I looked pretty hard.

Cons: >I was not initially a fan of the intel graphics hardware and driver - it was cumbersome to get it set to view properly on the TV using HDMI. Aspect ratio had to be manually adjusted BUT on the flip side, the graphics device software made it simplistic to adjust. To further con this con, this graphics hardware is the better choice in the Brix lineup.
>The power adapter cable that plugs into the brick is 90* and the brick is so small, the cable sticks out the side (I cant find much wrong with this thing, can't you tell I'm reaching?)
>...

Other Thoughts: Seriously, only a couple days of testing and I'm ecstatic to have found this product. I came from a custom built Dell Zino HD that had heat problems even when I tried to make it right. It was a great size and good enough for media PC but this Brix is EVEN BETTER! I have a separate Bluray player so I don't care about the lacking media drive.
I did have some concern about heat as noted in some comments and I did some testing and monitored heat w/o issues. Granted, I have yet to put it through paces but why when it will do nothing more than HD internet streaming. It will idle at around 48C which is normal. Doing a couple "capability checks" the fan kicked into high gear and held the cpu at 68C which is still reasonable. I would guess if I were doing some reasonably intensive gaming, it would ride this temp but that it TOTAL speculation. If the situation is to change, I'll update this. (if possible)

5 out of 5 eggsGreat PC for moderate tasks

Pros: Tiny. No more huge media pc for me. Can transport to other peoples house or to my shop no problem. Runs a 27" TV through HDMI wth full audio at max resolution.

Cons: None yet.

Other Thoughts: It also runs the pcb design software I use for my job, although I haven't tried to do that while also streaming video to the TV.

I have built many, many pc's over the years and will probably not be buying any more ATX, mini ATX, nor even a micro ATX mobos.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent for Media Center

Pros: This is an excellent compact PC that will serve well as your media center PC. Putting it together was a snap. Just add the SO-DIMM memory and mSATA SSD modules and you're good to go. This unit can also take a standard 2.5" SSD.

The Core i3 processor is good enough for most media center tasks. However if you are planning to use it for more than just a media center I would recommend you go to Core i5.

It is so quiet. I have not noticed the fan.

Cons: Power cable included is short.

Other Thoughts: I have added a Flirc dongle for Media Center remote capability and using my old Windows Media Center remote with it.
On software side I am using Plex Home Theater and XBMC.

4 out of 5 eggsNifty little PC

Pros: Small and quiet, decent performance for boring office tasks.

Cons: Wish it had a rear audio jack so all the cables could be run out the back.

Other Thoughts: A bit tricky to install Windows 7 due to UEFI BIOS and no DVD drive. I tried a couple of suggestions with no luck until I tried the Rufus utility.

1 out of 5 eggsNice size, OVERHEATS!

Pros: small form factor
i3 dual core cpu
low power requirements
arrived with latest F5 bios

Cons: Plain and simple: CPU overheats very easily.

- Just running memtest86+v5.20, the cpu will hit 60 deg C after one pass and then freeze. Keep in mind, I haven't even installed a hard drive yet! When that gets put in, the system temps will be higher!
- Sitting at idle in BIOS, system temp stays at 52*C and CPU at 51*C with the fan speed peaked out at 3600 RPM in a 26*C room with no obstructions to air flow
- Wouldn't boot with a USB flash drive
- Will not auto-refresh bios when a new USB device is plugged in (example: external DVD drive with boot disk or external hard drive) even when you exit the BIOS
- When keyboard and external DVD drive are plugged into the back USB ports, the keyboard will be lost on successful start up

Other Thoughts: Shining a flashlight into the back vent where the fan blows out, you can see that it almost touches the top of the case, meaning that air flow is minimal or non-existent because the motherboard almost completely blocks the side air vents.

I haven't decided if I'm going to return this or modify the case to provide the necessary air flow to cool the CPU. So far, I'm very disappointed at what was going to be my HTPC.
