Redefining the Desktop PC

Challenging the definition of a desktop PC, GIGABYTE engineers have developed an ultra compact PC with a stylish design based around an anthracite aluminum frame and glass surface chassis. Ideal for a broad range of computing applications at home or in the office, the BRIX expounds sheer simplicity and convenience. With a broad choice of processors covering the entire performance spectrum, the BRIX sets a new standard for desktop miniaturization that makes it perfect as a discreet HTPC/multimedia hub, an ultra-low power PC for the family, an office PC or as a digital signage unit.

Dual Display

With support for HDMI and DisplayPort, the BRIX can power two displays simultaneously, making a perfect choice as a high productivity PC in professional and home environments, or in any number of industrial and commercial multi-display applications.

Flexible Compact PC Kit

The BRIX is sold as a DIY PC kit, shipping with a Mini PCIe Wi-Fi module pre-installed, plus a power adapter and cable conforming to local standards. Requiring only system memory and mSATA SSD, the BRIX gives users the flexibility to independently choose integrated storage and system memory size, without the trouble of sourcing components that are not widely available on the retail market.

VESA Support

Bundled with a VESA bracket, the BRIX can easily be mounted behind a monitor or HDTV making it discreetly hidden from view. This makes it simple and effective way to turn any VESA-compliant display or TV into a full-featured PC or digital signage unit.

2.5" SATA Hard Drive Support

Utilizing SATA III 6Gbps high speed data transfer technology, the GIGABYTE BRIX Pro supports the installation of one 2.5" SATA hard drive and one mSATA SSD module. This allows for optimized storage configurations which combine fast SSD performance with larger capacity hard drives.

1 out of 5 eggsSimply does not work with SATA SSD + x64 Windows 7

Pros: This thing is exactly what I was looking for. A small, quiet but somewhat powerful PC with a pretty chassis and a low profile and a mini display port.

Cons: This device simply won't recognize hard drives once Windows 7 has been installed on them. I tried THREE different SATA SSDs on TWO different devices. I returned the first one for a replacement because I assumed this was due to a faulty SATA cable or something, but I think their BIOS just isn't properly handling something. I also tried updating to the latest BIOS, and that didn't do anything (no surprise, the release notes for that BIOS didn't suggest they'd help with this issue).

Other Thoughts: Gigabyte was going back and forth with me in their support web site (pretty awful support site, but someone does respond), but ultimately it's boiled down to them saying "Well it worked on the couple of SATA hard drives we tried (none of them SSD), how about you buy one of those." Not a valid solution. So now I am stuck dealing with the hassle of trying to get a refund on this item AND the memory I purchased for it more than 30 days after buying it because I had so much down time between a) the holidays affecting shipping times, b) getting a replacement RMA and c) going back and forth with Gigabyte hoping to find a solution.

I really wanted to make this work because as I mentioned, this device fit the bill of what I was looking for to a T. It just simply doesn't work.

5 out of 5 eggsSweet PC

Pros: Small footprint, freed up a lot of desk space
Phenomenal performance
Easy to assemble

Cons: Fan noise when located on desk

Other Thoughts: Bought this as a laptop replacement for the missus.
She had an Acer i5 laptop that never left her desk, and she hated the smallish screen and the monitor I had hooked to it.
So I purchased this Brix PC and a Crucial M500 CT240M500SSD3 240GB SSD and Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB (2 x 8G) BLS2K8G3N169ES4 RAM for it.

Going from a Core i5 with 8GB RAM to a Core i7 with 16GB of RAM, obviously the performance is going to be a huge difference, but I put this on par with my monster desktop (six core i7, 32GB RAM, PCIe SSD, two GTX 760Ti...) for everything other than graphics performance.

I also purchased a pair of Samsung S23C350H 23" monitors for her. Great monitors, but they lack VESA mounting holes. I was planning on using the built in VESA plate on the Brix to mount the PC on the back of one monitor, which would cut down on a little fan noise.
But, as soon as we got the Brix assembled and Windows loaded on it, away she went, so probably no chance of returning the Sammy Monitors now. I would have to buy some comparable VESA compat monitors and switch them out when she is not looking, since she is constantly on her new machine.

I have an aging Acer Revo ECPC running in my living room that needs replacement. After the great experience with this PC, I will be looking at another Gigabyte Brix to replace the Acer... Perhaps the Gigabyte GB-BXi7G3-760? Nothing like an i7 and a dedicated GTX760 in a PC no bigger than a watch case... Hmmm, I wonder how Steam would look on my 80 inch LED in the living room?
