Rating: 1/5Simply does not work with SATA SSD + x64 Windows 7
This review is from: GIGABYTE GB-BXi7H-4500 2 x 204Pin SO-DIMM Intel HD Graphics 4400 Integrated by CPU Black Mini-PC Barebone
Pros: This thing is exactly what I was looking for. A small, quiet but somewhat powerful PC with a pretty chassis and a low profile and a mini display port.
Cons: This device simply won't recognize hard drives once Windows 7 has been installed on them. I tried THREE different SATA SSDs on TWO different devices. I returned the first one for a replacement because I assumed this was due to a faulty SATA cable or something, but I think their BIOS just isn't properly handling something. I also tried updating to the latest BIOS, and that didn't do anything (no surprise, the release notes for that BIOS didn't suggest they'd help with this issue).
Other Thoughts: Gigabyte was going back and forth with me in their support web site (pretty awful support site, but someone does respond), but ultimately it's boiled down to them saying "Well it worked on the couple of SATA hard drives we tried (none of them SSD), how about you buy one of those." Not a valid solution. So now I am stuck dealing with the hassle of trying to get a refund on this item AND the memory I purchased for it more than 30 days after buying it because I had so much down time between a) the holidays affecting shipping times, b) getting a replacement RMA and c) going back and forth with Gigabyte hoping to find a solution.
I really wanted to make this work because as I mentioned, this device fit the bill of what I was looking for to a T. It just simply doesn't work.

This review is from: GIGABYTE GB-BXi7H-4500 2 x 204Pin SO-DIMM Intel HD Graphics 4400 Integrated by CPU Black Mini-PC Barebone
Pros: Small footprint, freed up a lot of desk space Phenomenal performance Easy to assemble
Cons: Fan noise when located on desk
Other Thoughts: Bought this as a laptop replacement for the missus. She had an Acer i5 laptop that never left her desk, and she hated the smallish screen and the monitor I had hooked to it. So I purchased this Brix PC and a Crucial M500 CT240M500SSD3 240GB SSD and Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB (2 x 8G) BLS2K8G3N169ES4 RAM for it.
Going from a Core i5 with 8GB RAM to a Core i7 with 16GB of RAM, obviously the performance is going to be a huge difference, but I put this on par with my monster desktop (six core i7, 32GB RAM, PCIe SSD, two GTX 760Ti...) for everything other than graphics performance.
I also purchased a pair of Samsung S23C350H 23" monitors for her. Great monitors, but they lack VESA mounting holes. I was planning on using the built in VESA plate on the Brix to mount the PC on the back of one monitor, which would cut down on a little fan noise. But, as soon as we got the Brix assembled and Windows loaded on it, away she went, so probably no chance of returning the Sammy Monitors now. I would have to buy some comparable VESA compat monitors and switch them out when she is not looking, since she is constantly on her new machine.
I have an aging Acer Revo ECPC running in my living room that needs replacement. After the great experience with this PC, I will be looking at another Gigabyte Brix to replace the Acer... Perhaps the Gigabyte GB-BXi7G3-760? Nothing like an i7 and a dedicated GTX760 in a PC no bigger than a watch case... Hmmm, I wonder how Steam would look on my 80 inch LED in the living room?
