GIGABYTE BRIX Gaming – Highly Compact, Highly Potent

The BRIX Gaming takes the signature compact design philosophy of the GIGABYTE BRIX series, adding a high-performance Intel® Core™ i5 processor and Nvidia® GeForce® GTX™ 760, as well as featuring a true high-performance processor that is ideally suited to CPU-intensive applications like image design and video editing.

The superior graphics performance of the BRIX Gaming means it's also great for 3D gaming. Available in black and green, with a choice of an Intel® Core™ i5 4200H or Intel® Core™ i7 processor (i7 version to launch in August) respectively, the BRIX Gaming is a DIY PC kit, shipped with a Wi-Fi Mini PCIe module pre-installed, a power adapter and cable.

The BRIX Gaming gives users the flexibility to independently choose integrated storage and system memory sizes, with the two SO-DIMM DD3L slots and the support for both mSATA SSD and standard 2.5" SSD installation.

GIGABYTE Barebone

Nvidia® GeForce® GTX™ 760 Graphics

The BRIX Gaming is the first ultra-small footprint device to boast the cutting edge graphics capabilities of Nvidia® GeForce® GTX™ 760 graphics. Based on the Nvidia Kepler architecture, it uses an on-package 3GB/6GB GDDR5 that negates memory pipeline issues, greatly boosting overall performance in 3D applications.

Surround Display and Native 4K Decode Support

The GIGABYTE BRIX Gaming features one Mini DisplayPort and two HDMI ports on the rear panel, enabling support for simultaneous triple display connectivity, making it suited for the work place, home theater and entertainment scenarios, and not to forget casual 3D gaming. The GIGABYTE BRIX Gaming also supports the latest 4K displays.

GIGABYTE Barebone

USB 3.0 and Network Connectivity

The GIGABYTE BRIX Gaming provides four USB 3.0 ports (2 front plus 2 rear) offering improved connectivity for peripherals, storage devices and more. In addition to including a Gigabit Ethernet port, the GIGABYTE BRIX Gaming also includes a Mini PCIe module offering IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi and the latest Bluetooth 4.0, providing connectivity for low power Bluetooth devices and peripherals, as well as allowing users to easily connect their mobile devices.

GIGABYTE Barebone

VESA Support

Bundled with a VESA bracket, the BRIX Gaming can easily be mounted behind a monitor or HDTV, making it discreetly hidden from view. This offers a simple and elegant way to turn any VESA-compliant display or TV into a full-featured PC or digital signage unit.

4 out of 5 eggsPerfect Travel Companion for Nvidia Shield

Pros: excellent gaming performance for size, price includes mini hdmi and miniDP cables, 6GB VRAM, streams to NVidia Shield portable

Cons: The GPU is neither a desktop GTX 760 nor a GTX 870M, loud under load (I measured 76+dB at 1.5 feet away), limited "BIOS", mediocre wireless performance

Other Thoughts: It is unclear what the GPU is exactly. From the specs via GPU-Z it looks to be a GTX870M with Optimus disabled, so you have to use the Gigabyte provided GeForce driver. nVidia's latest desktop and laptop drivers do not recognize the GPU. I took off one star for this. Otherwise, I am very satisfied with the performance (I usually run in Turbo mode set in the BIOS). When I travel, I bring the Brix, my nVidia portable, over ear headphones, and a netgear PR2000 - perfect travel gaming setup for me. I installed Windows 8.1 Pro and use Microsoft`s Remote Login Android app on the Shield when not streaming games.

installed components:
memory: Corsair Vengeance 8gb 1600 (2x4gb)
Boot drive: Crucial M500 msata 240gb
2nd Drive: Seagate 600 SSD 240gb

4 out of 5 eggsBest mini pc so far.

Pros: Powerful specs in a small form factor.
Unlike past brix devices, comes with minihdmi to hdmi cable so you wont run into compatability issues using adapters.
Does not boot with minidisplay port to vga or hdmi adapter but will work after initial installation.

Cons: Runs hot and loud but to be expected for a small enclosure, worrisome though.
Wireless card strength is awful using b/g/n router: biggest grievance. Get an external wireless card or possibly an ac router.

4 out of 5 eggsHighest power density available, at a cost

Pros: By far the smallest volume package for what essentially is high-end gaming laptop's guts folded into a slightly-bigger than NUC form factor. If you need a powerful GPU in the smallest size available, this packs in just about everything you'd need/want at both a fraction of the volume and price of an equivalently powerful gaming laptop.

It has internal capacity both for an mSATA SSD and a 2.5" drive.

It is Linux and Hackintosh friendly.

Cons: I was a bit skeptical of the power/heat situation before purchase. The advertising copy claims this is a desktop GTX 760, which consumes 170W by itself (this unit comes w/ a large/flat external 180W power supply). Turns out that the GPU is an 870M w/ a GK104M and a power rating of 100W. It actually manages to do pretty well on cooling, and in running it through it's paces I've been able to sustain an 875MHz clock on the GPU w/ minimal throttling (it is thermal limited to throttle automatically above 92/93C). Of course, this is in "Turbo" mode, where the fans sound like a tiny jet engine, so there's the tradeoff. In (BIOS default) "Normal" mode fan noise is reasonable, but throttling presumably will happen much more often.

Other Thoughts: You're paying a pretty high premium for the smallest possible form factor available. The closest SFF competitors (Zotac EN760, soon to be released Alienware Alpha, ROG GR8) are all at least twice the volume. Mini-ITX is a whole different universe in terms of size (10L+). If you need/want a good GPU in a close to NUC size, this is it.

While I'm impressed by the ability to mostly handle the 100W 870M part, I can't help but think that a 60W 750Ti or 45W 860M (Maxwell parts) would have been a better tradeoff...

Still, I hope this and these other ultra-SFF systems sell well - this form factor w/ 14nm Broadwell and 20/16nm Maxwell would be amazing.
